Previous meetings The clubs met in the / edition's opening set of fixtures, Ajax winning at home and then following it up with a win in France. Broke into the first team aged, winning the first of five Eredivisie titles in. Part of the team that lifted the UEFA Cup in, he then helped Ajax defeat AC Milan in the UEFA Champions final in Vienna three years later, adding the UEFA Super Cup and European/South American Cup later that same year. Won the domestic double in /, his last full season with Ajax before moving to Barcelona with Ronald. A Liga title followed in and De Boer made over appearances for the Catalan giants. Moved to Galatasaray in summer, signing for Rangers the following January. Hung up his boots in April following a spell in Qatar, so ending a career that also included caps for the Netherlands. With his country, De Boer reached the FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO semifinals, missing two penalties in a defeat by Italy in the latter.
