1 Student Information: Elsevier Clinical Skills (formerly Mosby s Nursing Skills) What is [Elsevier] Clinical Skills? Clinical Skills is a compilation of evidence based skills. This online training tool uses videos and animations to demonstrate a variety of skills. It will be used to augment your learning of these skills and procedures throughout your nursing education. Clinical Skills will be used both as a reference and competency tool you can use it to learn the skill, and it will also be used to test your knowledge of the skill (foundational knowledge, rationale behind skills, patient safety concerns, etc.). Each skill includes: Summary short (1 2 page) skill summary Checklist for competency reviews Equipment needed to perform the skill Demonstration a video or animation of the skill Self test offering immediate marking and rationale Skill overview in depth description of the skills including rationales, important considerations and references References literature references, further reading and useful web links How do I access Clinical Skills? Clinical Skills is accessible through Sakai; through your course home page. On your course home page you will see the Elsevier Clinical Skills icon. Click on this icon and you will be taken to (Elsevier) Clinical Skills. You will need to login each time this site is accessed from Sakai. NOTE: If using Elsevier Clinical Skills from an OHSU hospital unit (or OHSU library), you should not login, as the hospital has a different address. There is no need to login when accessing Clinical Skills from the OHSU O2 Intranet. For this reason (and to lessen any confusion), it is advised that you login from your course home page on Sakai. The first time you log in you will be asked to accept the terms of using the site (please do this).

2 Logging into Clinical Skills: Username Password Login Username: Your entire OHSU address Password: hello (this is the same for everyone you have the ability to change your password, but there is really no reason to do so & there is no record of your password for the OHSU site administrator to retrieve). Your clinical nursing faculty will assign the specific skill(s) &/or skills quizzes and competencies to you during your course. You will then be taken to your Personal Page, which looks like this: Because I am an administrator, my top menu bar appears differently than yours will. Your menu bar will have Home; elearning; Discussion and Tools.

3 You can see that when I look at My elearning Lessons I have 0 Lessons due. This means that my faculty have not assigned any Lessons/Modules for me yet. However, this does not mean that I don t have skills assigned (Clinical Skills/Elsevier Clinical Skills) for clinical that appear in my Course Materials on Sakai. The only difference that occurs when a Lesson/Module is assigned is that I will be able to not only view the skills test associated with a particular skill, but will also be able to take the test and receive a score. Some faculty may choose to use the skills test as a ticket to class, to evaluate your preparation & understanding of a skill and some may elect to use the skills test in a different manner ( pop quiz at the beginning of clinical, as a clinical discussion, etc.). NOTE: Unless your skills have been assigned as a elearning Lesson, you will be able to view all the components of the skill, including the skills test. However, you will not be able to actually take the test. You may copy & paste the test or use it in another format, but the site will not allow you to actually fill in your answers & give you a score. To view your assigned skill in all of its components (Quick Sheet, Extended Text, Supplies; Demo/Video; Illustrations, Test, Checklist), link from your Personal Page by clicking on the icon in the upper R hand corner. You will be taken directly to the clinical skills where you can search for and find your assigned skill. You can then complete the assigned components of this skill as assigned from your faculty on Course Materials on Sakai (e.g., sometimes you may need to view the Quicksheet and Demo; other times you may need to view all components, including the skills test). If your faculty have assigned that you take the skills test, they will have assigned these in the format of an elesson and your Personal Page will appear as such:

4 You can see that I now have 3 Lessons due. When you select the View button that corresponds with My elearning Lessons or Lessons due, you are taken to the next page which shows what these lessons are. This is a poor quality screen shot, but you get the idea. You can that the Lessons I have due are: Blood Glucose Monitoring; Medication Aministration Mixing Medication in One Syringe; and Medication Administration Subcutaneous Injection. They are due on 1/26/16. When I select Blood Glucose Monitoring,

5 I am then taken directly to that skill in Clinical Skills (links directly from that page): You can then review the quicksheet, view the demo (video), print checklists, view and take the skills test (receive your score & view the answer rationales; your score is also recorded and available for your faculty), etc. You can see why your clinical faculty may elect not to assign an elesson (which would mean you could take the skills test), but to just assign the skills in your Course Materials in Sakai. That is up to individual faculty in your individual clinical courses. Because the upgrade to this program happened at the beginning of this term Winter 2016), more faculty may elect to use this function in subsequent terms. Thank you! Other questions?
