Square D Clipsal Two-Channel DIN-Rail DALI Gateway A1 Instruction Bulletin 10/2006 INTRODUCTION Before You Begin This bulletin provides instructions for installing the Square D Clipsal Two-Channel DIN-Rail Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) Gateway. The SLC5502DAL provides an isolated two-way communications path between a C-Bus network and two DALI networks and enables C-Bus network control of DALI ballasts. The gateway detects and reports faulty lamps in fluorescent ballasts as well as failed DALI ballasts. DALI Gateways obtain their power from the C-Bus network, so they do not require an external power source. NOTE: DALI networks do not receive power from the C-Bus network, so they require a separate power supply (not included with the DALI Gateway). DALI Gateways are 4M wide (1M = 0.69 in. [17.5 mm]) and designed for mounting in suitably rated DIN-style enclosures, such as the Square D Clipsal 36M Enclosure. Built-in RJ-45 connectors enable quick connection to the C-Bus network and configuration with the C-Bus Toolkit software. Before installing a Two-Channel DIN-Rail DALI Gateway unit, verify that your order is complete by comparing the contents of the package with the list in the table below. Also verify that the catalog number on the box label matches your order. 6 Square D Clipsal Two-Channel DIN-Rail DALI Gateway A1 Instruction Bulletin 10/2006 COMPONENTS AND OPERATION This section provides a detailed summary of the Two-Channel DIN-Rail DALI Gateway s capabilities and operation. Power The DALI Gateway unit draws 32 ma from the C-Bus network, which is its sole power source. NOTE: DALI networks require a separate (DALI-specific) power supply, which is not included with the DALI Gateway. Status Indicators The front of the DALI Gateway has two status indicator LEDs that display the status of the Unit and the network (see figure Status Indicators, Two-Channel DALI Gateway ). Figure 1: Status Indicators, Two-Channel DALI Gateway KEY: A. Unit-Comms B. C-Bus The Unit-Comms status indicator LED displays a steady light when the DALI Gateway has power and is operating. This LED flashes when data is being transferred between the C-Bus and DALI systems (C-Bus to DALI as well as DALI to C-Bus). Table 2: Unit-Comms Status Indicator Definitions Indicator Status ON Flashing Meaning Power is ON and the unit is functioning Data exchange in progress Schneider Electric. All Rights Reserved.
A1 Square D Clipsal Two-Channel DIN-Rail DALI Gateway 10/2006 Instruction Bulletin C-Bus The C-Bus status indicator LED displays a steady light when there is sufficient network voltage and a valid C-Bus Clock signal. The LED flashes when the available power on the C-Bus network is lower than the current load. The LED is off when there is no C-Bus network clock, there is no C-Bus power to the unit, or the C-Bus power is not sufficient to support the network. Table 3: C-Bus Status Indicator Definitions Indicator Status ON Flashing OFF Meaning Power is ON and the C-Bus network is functioning Marginal C-Bus network power No C-Bus network clock, insufficient power to support the C-Bus network, no C-Bus network connection (check terminations) Remote Overrides The DIN-Rail Relay has provisions for connecting two remote switches that provide Remote Override ON and OFF functions (for wiring examples, see section Remote Override Connections ). Activation of a Remote Override occurs when the switch mechanism contact closes. When one of the remote override inputs is activated, all the group addresses will be set to either ON or OFF accordingly. If the Remote ON and OFF are activated simultaneously, the Remote OFF has priority (see the table Operating Mode Hierarchy ). If Remote ON is activated, the DALI Gateway issues a global message Direct Arc Power 100% to both DALI networks. If Remote OFF is activated, the gateway issues a global message Indirect Arc Power OFF to both DALI networks. Table 4: Operating Mode Hierarchy Mode Priority Function Remote OFF 1 (Highest) Turns all group addresses OFF Remote ON 2 Turns all group addresses ON C-Bus input unit (keypad, PIR, etc.) 3 Controls the group addresses if there is no override in effect 2006 Schneider Electric. 8 Square D Clipsal Two-Channel DIN-Rail DALI Gateway A1 Instruction Bulletin 10/2006 C-Bus System Support The remote switches can be located up to 3280 ft (1000 m) from the DALI Gateway unit. Multiple switches can be connected in parallel to the same remote input, allowing remote control of the unit from different locations by using any type of cable (for wiring examples, see section Remote Override Connections ). A single switch also can be used to remotely control up to 30 different units within the same C-Bus network. NOTE: C-Bus is a balanced network, so C-Bus positive (+) must be present at any point where C-Bus negative ( ) is taken. Therefore both network conductors [C-Bus positive (+) and C-Bus negative ( )] must be looped through all Remote Override input switches on the network. DALI Gateway units can generate a C-Bus system clock signal and a network burden, so they are capable of supporting a simple C-Bus network. See the "Configuration" section for instructions on enabling the clock and burden. C-Bus System Clock DALI Gateway units incorporate a software-selectable C-Bus System Clock, which synchronizes data communications waveforms on the C-Bus network. Typically the clock is disabled: Only one active clock is required for successful C-Bus network communications, and a maximum of three C-Bus units per network should have the clock circuitry enabled. See "Using a System Clock or Network Burden" in the Configuration section for instructions on enabling the clock. Network Burden DALI Gateway units incorporate a software-selectable network burden that can be enabled in the event the network does not yet have a burden. One hardware or software network burden is required for network termination and biasing, but only one network burden should be installed per network. To determine if one must be installed for a network, consult the C-Bus Toolkit software. See "Using a System Clock or Network Burden" in the Configuration section for instructions on enabling the burden Schneider Electric. All Rights Reserved.
A1 Square D Clipsal Two-Channel DIN-Rail DALI Gateway 10/2006 Instruction Bulletin User-Configured Addressing Structure Power Outage and Restoration Standalone Configuration C-Bus to DALI and DALI to C-Bus communications are configured by using the C-Bus Toolkit software. All C-Bus units have onboard non-volatile memory, which is used to store the operating state of the unit in case of a power outage. The DALI Gateway draws 32 ma from the C-Bus network, making it possible to configure the unit without a connection to an external power source. Requirements for configuring a unit include connection to an operational C-Bus network that is capable of supporting one or more extra C-Bus units (32 ma current required per gateway). For more information about configuration requirements, see "Configuration" in the "Installation" section Schneider Electric. All Rights Reserved. 9
Square D Clipsal Two-Channel DIN-Rail DALI Gateway A1 Instruction Bulletin 10/2006 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS This section contains important safety precautions that must be followed before attempting to install or maintain electrical equipment. Carefully read and follow the safety precautions below. HAZARD OF ELECTRIC SHOCK, EXPLOSION, OR ARC FLASH This equipment must be installed and serviced by qualified electrical personnel. Apply appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safe electrical work practices. See NFPA 70E. Turn off all electrical power supplying this equipment before working on or inside the equipment. Always use a properly rated voltage sensing device to confirm that power is off. Replace all devices, doors, and covers before turning on power to this equipment. Failure to follow these instructions will result in death or serious injury. Transient Voltage Surge Protection Each unit incorporates transient protection circuitry. Additional external power surge protection devices should be used to enhance system immunity to power surges. It is strongly recommended that appropriate transient voltage surge protection be installed at all service entrance equipment Schneider Electric. All Rights Reserved.
A1 Square D Clipsal Two-Channel DIN-Rail DALI Gateway 10/2006 Instruction Bulletin INSTALLATION Network Considerations Configuration Prerequisites Follow the procedures in this section to mount the DALI Gateway units and to make electrical and C-Bus network wiring connections. The DALI Gateway units draw 32 ma from the C-Bus network at all times. Determine the total network current load and verify that there will be adequate C-Bus power to support all the connected devices. Also verify that the amount of available power is no more than 2 A. Generally, one physical C-Bus network can have a maximum of 50 DALI Gateway units. However, the design of the network, including the specific number and types of units on it, could decrease the maximum number of allowable DALI Gateway units. Before a DALI Gateway can operate on the C-Bus network, the C-Bus Toolkit software must be used to assign a unique identification (unit address) and mode of operation on the network. When the units are being installed as part of a large or complex network, it is most efficient to perform the basic configuration before the units are physically installed. However, the units can be configured before or after physical installation. The following components are typically required to configure a DALI Gateway unit. (Specific items and product numbers can vary according to the network and type of C-Bus unit.) PC with the C-Bus Toolkit software installed DALI Gateway unit being configured (SLC5502DAL) Using a C-Bus Clock or Network Burden The following sections describe how to enable and disable a system clock or a network burden. All procedures are carried out by using the C-Bus Toolkit software. NOTE: A C-Bus network should have a maximum of three system clocks and one network burden enabled Schneider Electric. All Rights Reserved. 11
Square D Clipsal Two-Channel DIN-Rail DALI Gateway A1 Instruction Bulletin 10/2006 Enabling a System Clock or Network Burden NOTE: Remove any hardware burden if a software burden is to be enabled. HAZARD OF IMPROPER OR UNSTABLE OPERATION Networks require only one burden. Before enabling a network burden, use the graphical user interface (GUI) software to verify that the network does not already have one. Failure to follow this instruction can result in improper C-Bus network operation. 1. Start the C-Bus Toolkit software 2. If this is a new unit, add it to the network and set its Address. 3. Double-click on the unit's name to open its graphical user interface (GUI). 4. Find the check boxes for Enable C-Bus Clock and Enable Burden. In the DALI Gateway GUI they might be on the top right side of the page. If either box already has been selected, that function has been enabled at this unit. NOTE: There should be a maximum of one network burden and three system clocks per C-Bus network. 5. Verify that the network has fewer than three clocks enabled. To enable a system clock at this unit, select (click in) the box next to Enable C-Bus Clock. 6. Verify that the network does not already have a burden enabled. To enable a burden at this unit, select (click in) the box next to Enable Burden. 7. Click on the OK button. 8. When the Save Location dialog box opens, click on the OK button. The graphical user interface will close Schneider Electric. All Rights Reserved.
A1 Square D Clipsal Two-Channel DIN-Rail DALI Gateway 10/2006 Instruction Bulletin Disabling a System Clock or Network Burden 1. Start the C-Bus Toolkit software. 2. Double-click on the unit's name to open its graphical user interface (GUI). 3. Find the check box for Enable C-Bus Clock or Enable Burden and click in the box until it is empty. 4. Click on the "OK" button. 5. When the "Save Location" dialog box opens, click on the "OK" button. The graphical user interface will close. Identifying the C-Bus Units and Their Locations The location of each C-Bus unit must be tracked. Two recommended methods are given below, one for when the units are configured before installation (see section Labeling the C-Bus Units ), the other for when the units are configured after installation (see section Recording Each Unit s Location ). Labeling the C-Bus Units When C-Bus units are configured before physical installation, it is important to label them to indicate where they are to be placed. One method for doing this would be to write each unit s address directly on it. NOTE: Verify that each configured unit has been marked to indicate where it should be placed in an enclosure or a building or site. Recording Each Unit's Location In order to track C-Bus units that will be configured after physical installation, they must be identified and their location must be recorded at the time they are installed. NOTE: If a unit has already been configured and assigned a location on a site map, it is not necessary to make another record of its location Schneider Electric. All Rights Reserved. 13
Square D Clipsal Two-Channel DIN-Rail DALI Gateway A1 Instruction Bulletin 10/2006 HAZARD OF UNEXPECTED OR IMPROPER SYSTEM BEHAVIOR Properly record the physical location of each unit using the lift-and-peel label provided on the box and a site plan or location log. Retain location records and provide them to the person(s) responsible for configuring and commissioning the network. Failure to follow these instructions can result in unexpected or improper system behavior. Before installing a unit, use the following guidelines to record its location. Recording each unit's location is required for configuration with the C-Bus Toolkit software. Each unit is identified by a unique serial number found on the box label (see the figure Box Label with Lift-and-Peel Section ). The serial number provides important information for recording a unit's location. Figure 2: Box Label with Lift-and-Peel Section KEY: A. Serial number B. Bar code C. Lift-and-peel section The box label also has a bar code that can be read by an infrared scanner and used for a record of a specific unit s location. A liftand-peel section of the box label duplicates the box label s information (see Box Label with Lift-and-Peel Section diagram). To record the location of a unit, remove the lift-and-peel section from the box label and attach it to a site plan or other document. The lift-and-peel section now provides a record of the physical location where that unit is installed. When installing multiple units of one kind in an area or enclosure, such as six four-channel DIN dimmers in an enclosure, verify that the document or site plan indicates the relative position of each specific unit Schneider Electric. 16 Square D Clipsal Two-Channel DIN-Rail DALI Gateway A1 Instruction Bulletin 10/2006 Electrical Wiring Connections Follow the safety precautions and guidelines for making electrical connections that are given in this section. HAZARD OF ELECTRIC SHOCK, EXPLOSION, OR ARC FLASH Turn off all electrical power supplying this equipment before working on or inside the equipment. Always use a properly rated voltage-sensing device to confirm that power is off. Replace all devices, doors, and covers before turning on power to this equipment. Failure to follow these instructions will result in death or serious injury. NOTE: DALI networks are typically wired as Class 1 control circuits. Although DALI networks have a low operating voltage of 16 V, dangerous voltage levels could appear on DALI wiring as a result of wiring errors or insulation faults Schneider Electric. All Rights Reserved.
A1 Square D Clipsal Two-Channel DIN-Rail DALI Gateway 10/2006 Instruction Bulletin Wiring Guidelines The guidelines below are important to consider when working with DIN-Rail DALI Gateways. Verify that the power to the system is turned OFF before handling electrical power conductors. Observe national and local electrical codes. Verify the number and types of units that can be connected to this network (see section Network Considerations ). Consult the figure Electrical Wiring Connections to connect a DALI network to the gateway. Use suitably rated copper DALI cable, one #12 or two #14 22 AWG (one x 3.1 mm² or two x 2.0 mm² 0.33 mm²). Isolate the DALI Gateway unit from the electrical power lines. The recommended torque for tightening the terminal screws is 5 lb-in. (0.56 Nm). Do not exceed this torque. Insert the rubber terminal plugs into any unused RJ-45 ports. Do not Megger test C-Bus data cabling or terminals. HAZARD OF C-BUS NETWORK PERFORMANCE DEGRADATION Do not Megger test C-Bus data cabling or terminals as it can degrade the performance of the C-Bus network. Failure to follow this instruction will result in damage to the C-Bus network Schneider Electric. All Rights Reserved. 17
