American Emergency Vehicles (AEV) conducted crash testing of an ambulance. This CD, Ambulance Crashworthiness Defined, shows the rugged construction and crashworthiness of an AEV ambulance. AEV has provided copies of this CD for each EVOC T3 Course participant. 2. The State of North Carolina developed a first class video, N.C. Highway Incident Safety 2009, about how to stage the various emergency vehicles at a highway crash scene. The State granted AITS permission to copy and distribute this 27 minute DVD. Each participant will receive a copy of this DVD. 3. The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) cosponsored a research project on The Effects of Sleep Deprivation on Fire Fighters and EMS Responders. AITS strongly recommends that each participant go to to download the videos and final report for this project. It is a must see program that should be incorporated into all emergency responder training programs. 4. The IAFC web site, also has the Guide to IAFC Model Policies and Procedures for Emergency Vehicle Safety which was developed in partnership with the Department of Homeland Security and United States Fire Administration. This is an excellent discussion about Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). A second document at this site is the Model Policies; Emergency Vehicle Response is in Microsoft Word. This document has several Policies and Procedures in a great format that can be edited. This is a solid reference and can be easily become your department s SOP or serve as a reference. 4
5 5. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standards are often adopted by the U.S. Fire Administration, Department of Homeland Security. NFPA Standard 1002, Standard for Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Professional Qualifications was adopted by a DHS news release September 19, NFPA Standards may be purchased at the NFPA.org website. 6. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Published the Emergency Vehicle Visibility and Conspicuity Study, FA-323 in August You can download this 43 page document by going to the FEMA.gov website or Google FEMA FA The IAFC and the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) published four key areas during the 2009 Safety Week. IAFC granted AITS permission to reprint this article. Each participant will receive a copy of the first of these four key areas: Safety: Emergency Driving (Enough is Enough End Senseless Death) a. Never drive above posted speed limits any time you re responding to or returning from an alarm or incident. b. Wear a seatbelt every time you ride in any type of vehicle! No Exceptions! c. Always make a complete stop at all traffic controlled Intersections. (AITS) 7932 Lake Pleasant Drive Springfield, VA , Tel: Fax: [email protected], 5
