7 General notes ErP (ecological design) guideline ErP Directive (29/125/EU) In the year 25 the European Union passed the new directive 25/32/EC with requirements for the environmentally sound design of energy-using products. It has become known as the EuP or Eco-Design directive. The abbreviation EuP stands for energy using products, and it means that the directive covers all products which consume energy (apart from motor vehicles and public means of transport). On 2th November 29 it was replaced by the new directive 29/125/EC. The most important change is that the area of application was widened from energy-driven products to energyrelated products. Accordingly, it is now usually abbreviated as ErP directive. Circulation pumps of glandless design and electric motors of glanded pumps are also covered by the ErP directive. In 29 the EU Commission defined minimum efficiency requirements in two regulations. These go far beyond the requirements of the current energy efficiency requirements for glandless pumps or the current best class EFF1 for electric motors. The ordinances will be implemented in several steps in the coming years. In this way, the highly efficient individual pump series Wilo-Stratos and Wilo-Stratos PICO already meet the particularly strict requirements of the second stage of the ordinance for glandless circulation pumps which is to apply from 215 onwards. They can thus contribute to increased energy efficiency in heating systems not just from 213, but immediately! APPLIES TO EUROPEAN DIRECTIVE FOR ENERGY RELATED PRODUCTS Glandless circulation pumps: The market for glandless pumps especially will be significantly changed by this. After all, until now in many EU countries virtually all models in use have been without speed control. These have an enormous energy consumption, however. In contrast, considerable potential savings and greenhouse gas reductions can be achieved with high-efficiency pumps due to their particularly low electricity consumption. Throughout Europe, the EU Commission Directive could save about half the energy consumption of glandless circulation pumps by the third stage of implementation in 22. This amounts to the giant quantity of 23 terawatt hours of energy per year the energy production of approx. six medium-sized coal-fired power stations. Across Europe, this corresponds to a reduction of CO2 emissions of about 11 million tonnes per year.. The yardstick for determining which pump models can continue to be used in future is referred to as the energy efficiency index (EEI). This is calculated using a process defined in the ordinance (EC) 641/29. The average electrical power of pump is calculated on the basis of a load profile in relation to a reference pump, i.e. an average pump with the same hydraulic output. Three stages are planned: 1. From January 213, the Energy Efficiency Index (EEI) limit value for glandless circulating pumps installed outside the heat generator (external pumps) will be defined as.27. The previous energy efficiency classes will then no longer exist. As a rule, pumps far exceed the minimum efficiency requirements of the current energy efficiency class A. This is why the energy efficiency classes will be replaced by an EEI marking on the pump. 2. From August 215, the EEI limit value will be reduced further to.23. This will also apply to glandless circulation pumps, designed to operate in newly installed heat generators or solar thermal systems (integrated pumps). 3. In the last implementation stage, the regulations starting from 22 will also apply for the replacement of integrated pumps in existing heat generators. All glandless circulation pumps in the heating, air-conditioning and solar sectors will be affected. Secondary hot water circulation pumps are an exception to this. 9
8 General notes ErP (ecological design) guideline Glanded pumps: An appropriate EU regulation for conventional electric motors has taken effect earlier than the one planned for glandless circulation pumps. It also applies to units installed in glanded pumps for heating, air-conditioning, water supply, pressure boosting and sewage disposal. New efficiency classes have been defined against this background. EFF has become IE From 16th June 211 motorised glanded pumps may be placed on the market only if their motors demonstrate a minimum motor efficiency class of IE2. The designation IE stands for International Efficiency and defines globally applicable efficiency classes for low-voltage three-phase AC asynchronous motors in the power range from.75 to 375 kw. It is based on the new IEC 634-3:28 standard. It supersedes the division into three efficiency classes EFF1 to EFF3 which has applied in Europe since APPLIES TO EUROPEAN DIRECTIVE FOR ENERGY RELATED PRODUCTS The following motor efficiency classes have been defined: IE1 = Standard efficiency, approximately comparable to EFF2 IE2 = High efficiency, approximately comparable to EFF1 IE3 = Premium efficiency IE4 = Super-premium efficiency (IEC TS Ed.1) Three stages were defined for the conversion: 1. Efficiency level IE2 must be complied with from 16th June 211 by all new sales of electric motors on the market apart from a few design types and applications. Pump motors with the currently established efficiency level EFF2 which will be called IE1 in the future may then no longer be sold in the European Union. 2. From 1st January 215, an even stricter efficiency level IE3 will apply. By this time, motors with a rated output power of 7.5 to 375 kw must reach this level. Alternatively, they must meet efficiency level IE2 and be equipped with speed control. 3. From 1st January 217, these requirements will apply also to motors with a rated output power of.75 to 375 kw. Against this background, since 1st January 211 all glanded pumps supplied by Wilo have been already equipped with IE2 motors. Thus the requirements of the first stage of the ErP Directive have been satisfied ahead of time. The ErP Directive also applies to pressure boosting systems. Therefore for several months, Wilo has for instance been offering for pressure boosting systems the Helix range of high-pressure centrifugal pumps, which are fitted as standard with IE2 motors. Thus these pumps also already satisfy the requirements of the Directive, which come into effect from mid-211. The high-efficiency pump series Wilo-Stratos GIGA for the upper performance range in heating, cold-water and cooling applications is a completely new development. For the first time, glanded pumps are driven by EC motors with extremely low current consumption. The motor's energy efficiency is based on the new high-efficiency HED drive concept (HED High Efficiency Drive) from Wilo and even outclasses the limits of the upcoming efficiency class IE4 (acc. to IEC TS Ed.1) that is set to be the best. In addition, all specifications of the new EU Regulation, which are set to come into force on 16th June 211, 1st January 215 or 1st January 217 under the auspices of the European Ecological Design Directive on the energy efficiency of electric motors, have already been substantially exceeded. 1
9 Planning guide EEI classifications Energy efficiency class In the context of the Kyoto Agreement, European governments in particular are pursuing the goal of drastically reducing CO 2 emissions. Energy labelling, particularly for high-consumption household devices such as washing machines and refrigerators, is prescribed as an important control element for providing the end consumer with an aid for making decisions in favour of energy-saving appliances. Due to the fact that heating circulation pumps are among the biggest individual electricity consumers in household use because of their long running times, leading European heating pump manufacturers have voluntarily declared their intention of henceforth attaching energy labels to their heating pumps. This makes it possible for users and end consumers to recognise, on the basis of an already familiar classification system, whether a heating circulation pump in use is particularly energy-efficient. The classification of the energy efficiency of heating pumps is carried out by means of a technical measuring procedure, which provides the Energy Efficiency Index, EEI. The smaller the EEI, the less electrical energy the pump consumes and the more favourable the energy classification. In accordance with the lettering system familiar from household appliances, A is the best possible and G is the worst possible of the energy classes. A comparison of hydraulically similar pumps with different energy classifications reveals that there is a difference of approximately 22% in terms of energy consumption between two sequentially numbered energy classes. Accordingly, an energy class A pump requires on average only around 33% of the electrical energy consumed by a class D pump. Even though the energy requirements of a class A pump are very high, high-efficiency energy class A pumps have in the meantime become available for use throughout the entire performance range from single-family houses to large buildings. 11
