Weight vs Dimensional Weight Dimensional Weight (also referred to as DIM Weight or Volumetric Weight ) is a calculation of a shipment s weight that is based on a package s volume as opposed to its actual weight. Dimensional weight is used by all the major transport firms to determine billable weight and is based on the International Air Transport Association (IATA) volumetric standards. To calculate your dimensional weight you need to first determine the cubic size of your package (Length Width Height). Then divide that number by a dimensional factor, which is based whether it is a domestic or international shipment (7000 cm³/kg for Domestic; 6000 cm³/kg for International). 5 Dimensioning Solutions Applied Biosystems control the flow of goods METTLER TOLEDO assists in performing a 100 % check on all goods dispatched from the distribution centre. This way both the supplier and transport operator are ensured correct parcel data for seamless transport and correct invoicing. Operating worldwide, Applied Biosystems, a division of the Applera Corporation, supplies equipment to life science organizations involved in molecular and protein research. The European distribution centre of Applied Biosystems located in Nieuwerkerk a/d IJssel, in the Netherlands, serves a large portion of the European market. From this EDC (European Distribution Centre) customers are not only supplied with consumables for their equipment but also peripheral equipment and software. Constant flow of goods Daily, hundreds of orders are picked and checked at various packaging stations and prepared for dispatch. The majority of orders consist of parcels, boxes and trays. A short while ago the need arose for gaining more control over this part of the logistics process within Applied Biosystems. Until then, standard parcel dimensions and weights, and a labour-intensive method of data exchange with their transport operators was used. As part of that, the various airway bills (AWB) were printed separately. Jan Willem Bos, Process Development Specialist, recounts: This method of operation was rather time-consuming and errorsensitive. Discrepancies between basic data provided by us and the values measured by the transport operator only generated extra correspondence and corrections. Because of this, the routing through the distribution centre was changed, which at the same time was the right time to tackle the data collection process. As part of that, the distribution centre decided to purchase a METTLER TOLEDO CS5120 measuring station consisting of a volume scanner, a 150 kg scale and a bar code scanner. Bos explains: The operator lets a parcel roll off the feed roller conveyor onto the scale. The weighing platform has also been fitted with a roller conveyor and is located underneath the volume scanner. The only thing the operator needs to do is scan the bar code. After that, the system automatically determines the volume and weight. Integrated data After collecting the physical properties of the scanned parcel, the CS5120 generates an integrated data string containing the volume, weight and bar code data. This information is then sent to the host SAP ERP system. A shipping label is then printed and applied to the parcel, and forwarded to the dispatch department. There, the item is presorted, based on the destination data, for the transport firm. Worldwide Mr. Bos, who is also in charge of international warehousing and logistics projects, adds: After the implementation of the measuring station at our Dutch warehouse, a similar installation was installed in Great Britain and presently we are in the process of installing the same type at our warehouse in Singapore.
