Southland Fish Supplies The fish landing solution has improved the efficiency of operations for Southland Fish Supplies, an Australian fish wholesaler and processor, by simplifying the monitoring process. Southland needed to identify products by vessel, species, grade and form, as well as match them to customer orders. The challenge was to find a registration and monitoring system that could cope with a multi-species fishery, says Managing Director Steve Buckless. We land up to 170 different species of fish throughout the year in numerous grades and forms. The fish landing solution brings it all together. The right solution The fish registration and monitoring solution developed by Marel in partnership with Southland consists of an M2200 packing scale and printer, along with production management software that registers data such as vessel, species, grade, weight, etc. The solution prints out order-specific labels for each product that match the Sydney Fish Market s bar-coding system. Southland also assigns some fish to further processing, in which case the label displays the date and time, making it easy to track the use-by date and providing a high level of product traceability right back to the catching vessel. On top of keeping track of all this data, Southland must fulfill Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) compliance regulations. With mixed boxes that contain more than one fish species, for example, each species must be weighed individually for its quota and compliance regulations. Prior to the installation of, this information was recorded manually and duplicated 3-4 times to meet various requirements. Eliminating manual handling of data In order to monitor compliance with fish quotas, AFMA regulations also require fish species that are monitored for overfishing to be reported per vessel delivery. This information is submitted in hardcopy and then entered into the AFMA system manually. Southland is now seeking approval to use a data file generated by, which would eliminate the double handling and re-entry of data.
