1 Hexham Auction Mart 4 th March 2016 Store Cattle Hexham & Northern Marts held the first of their trio of sales to take place in the month of March and offered a strong entry of 712 head of both older stores and younger, yearling types. With no fewer than Thirty-Three buyers occupying every available space around the ringside at start time, trade for the older, forward sorts which always make up the early portion of each sale, was slightly dearer on the week with both local and distant buyers returning to the Hexham sale ring. The sale leader was a super Charolais cross steer at 20 months from Messrs Eggleston, Thornham Hill which broke the fourteen hundred pound barrier to sell for 1425 to Declan Foley. A smashing run of seven steers, all by the Charolais bull sold very well to average 1290 for the Matfen based regular consignors at this centre. A tremendous run of 11 well-grown, home bred steers sold exceedingly well for Messrs Walton, Ogle Castle, all by the Limousin bull and sold at months of age the run saw five separate lots sell at 1300 to buyers from Northumberland, Yorkshire and Derbyshire. The Ponteland based family were delighted with their trade and certainly benefitted greatly on the day averaging 1285 for their efforts. Quantity and quality of cattle were in plentiful supply when Charlie, Sylvia and Charles Armstrong made the trip from Middle Moor, Alnwick down to Hexham and the North Northumberland based family were well rewarded on the day for their extensive run of steers and heifers. Their cattle found new homes all over the UK proving distance is no object and certainly of no detriment to well-bred cattle sold from a far through the Hexham ring. The majority of this run were made up of British Blue cross steers and heifers at months and these peaked at 1175 and 1045 respectively. Stronger heifers also saw a lift on the week and were topped at 1270 for a big Limousin cross lady from Messrs Herdman, Lunns House, County Durham who sold five in total to average a noteworthy 1172 per head.
2 With thoughts turning to Spring turnout a number of noted consignors brought forward some very well bred and equally well presented yearling types which sold with deserved rewards to a full crowd of both feederfinishers and cattle graziers which saw their ranks of Thirty-Three swell above Eighty after lunch. With an abundance of highlights too numerous to mention the leading prices in these yearling classes were dominated by Messrs Athey, Lovelady Shield, Alston and Messrs Lee, Harwood Shield, Hexhamshire for tremendously shapely Limousin cross steers and heifers respectively. The Athey Family sold steers to a top of 1155 and an average of 1079 for five sold whilst Messrs Lee sold a pair of smart heifers to 1125 and saw their run of eight average 1026, all at months of age. The North Tyne valley was well represented by similarly well-bred calves from Alan & John Dixon, Chirdon which peaked at 1045 for a smart duo which were only nine and ten months old. The attention of both vendor and purchaser customers is respectfully drawn to our special March prize show and sale of overwintered suckled calves, many with show ring potential which takes place at Hexham Mart next week. The catalogued show of calves will take place at 6pm on Thursday 10 th whilst the sale of over 1000 top quality beef bred cattle will start at 9.30am the next day on Friday 11 th. This will be followed the next week by our annual prize show and sale of YFC calves and the monthly special sale of native breed cattle. Entries and enquiries for either of these noted sales should be directed to the Mart Offices on or cattle auctioneers Trevor Simpson ( ) or Chris Armstrong ( ).
