1 Spherical engine/generator-unit can boost electrical car dynamics Automobile: Cars run singely on battaries have a range of approx. 150 km. Electrical cars with "range-extender" have the same range as today's conventional cars. These days there is a talk about a gasoline engine / generator unit which is based on a novel spherical engine integrated with an electrical engine. Die Huettlin-spherical-engine is great because it is compact, very light and the operation takes place without any gear-box and differential. It has high specific power and consumes less fuel. By the end of the year the motor should have reached a mature status so it can be planted into a electrical car of a car manufacturer. VDI nachrichten (German society of engineers news), Lucerne, Switzerland 15 july 2011, wop The conventional piston engine with crank shaft, piston rod and piston has always been dominating the field of combustion engines. Only german Felix Wankel was successful temporarily to penetrate the domain of conventional upstroke piston engines with his genuine rotary piston engine. Eventually he failed because there was a mismatch between stroke (displacement) and inner diametre. Because the conventional piston engine was successful over time reducing consumption and meeting lower exhaust limits and increasing power at the same time any new concept face very high requirements to push through. Now there is a new proposal from inventor and manufacturer Herbert Huettlin who creates public attention when it comes to fuel consumption, emissions and specific power. His "spherical engine" certainly does not exist free-of stroke piston engine, but is composed free-of crank shaft, piston rod and valves. The engine is first of all a counter piston four-stroke engine, the opening stroke like the conventional counter piston two-stroke-engine is created through two counter acting pistons. Thus pistons make relatively short strokes. Without that the system would not be possible. The sperical engine of Huettlin is the first experiment ever to operate a four-stroke engine as counter acting pistons. Due to short piston stroke it is possible to mandate curvy pistons through a curvy way inside the sphere as opposed to conventional crank shaft and piston rod. A fixed curvy orbital channel is created within the sphere, let us say on the inside wall of the sphere. Within the curvy channel two groups of pistons move. Each is mandated through the curvy way through a hollow sphere made of titan. Apart from that the two swinging pistons are connected through a central axis moving with them and thus form two groups of connected pistons. In history there were several attempts to replace crank shaft and piston rod and to directly link pistons moving in a curvy way, linking them to the drive shaft. Nobody superseded idea and experimental stage - yet Huettlin.

The change of gas and the connection to spark plug is made by a round opening for each combustion chamber in the space of top dead center of the curvy orbital channel of the piston rotor. Through this design mixture generation should be more intensive and homogeneous compared to the conventional motor. The curvy pistons do not touch the cylinder wall due to exact mandation through the titanal spheres guiding the pistons. The sealing is made of conventional piston rings. Huettlin has created an electrical engine around the combustion engine. The very flat permanent
3 magnetic motor is turning with and around the piston groups. It is possible to make mechanical drive only so the inventor of the engines says but the focus is on using the spherical engine as a range-extender for elecrical cars. Citing him: "We want to operate the car electrically but the power for this comes from the spherical combustion engine." The pre-serial prototype makes 74 kw at max min-1 with double turbo-charging. It generates 140 Nm to 290 Nm torque, Huettlin explains in the conversation with VDI (german society for engineers news). The prototype has 1,18 l cubic capacity - lifting stroke 82 mm (2 times 41 mm), piston diametre is 90 mm, compression is 10,5 : 1. Because of the power density the engine is cooled with water from outside, from inside with oil. The Huettlin-spherical engine is currently operating with suction tube injection. Direct injection and diesel variant is currently worked upon. Only through reduction of friction by about 40% and through optimal combustion Dr. Huettlin is counting on significant reduction of consumption compared to a conventional four cylinder motor: "25% less consumption is a realistic figure.". The weight of the engine is relatively light because it has fewer parts. It is only 62 kg. The conventional motor has 240 parts counting without screws and sealings. The spherical engine consists of only 63 parts. Rating of exhaust has not been carried-out yet due to the stage of development. But the composition of the exhaust gas should not be much different from conventional gasoline engine. To realise Dr. Huettlin's idea a group of swiss businessmen have built a company together with him. In 1998 the company Innomot AG was founded in St. Erhard, close to Lucerne Switzerland. Target of the company is to sell licences for Huettlin-spherical-engine worldwide basing on the worldwide patents of Dr. Huettlin. The german company with the name Innojet Herbert Huettlin is constantly receiving orders from Innomot AG to develop the spherical engine. The group does not want to enter into serial production. The profit should be made through worldwide sales of the licence. The spherical engine with integrated generator to be operated as range-extender is a promising variant. This has also been shown by recent talks of the group with car manufacturers who develop electrical cars. One big company may fall prey to the benefits: compact design, combined design of combustion engine and electrical engine, light weight, operation without crank shaft and differential. About at the end of the year according to Dr. Huettlin a prototype should be implanted into an electrical car of a car manufacturer. "Though optimisation continues.", the inventor says. The dilemma of the range-extender currently is, there are many suggestions how to design them. But as the Huettlin-spherical-engine can be used as compressor, too it could reach serial stage even

The piston rotor in the inner of the spherical housing is rotating around the main axis. The
5 two twin pistons connected to each other, they are guided by the two hollow titanal spheres on the orbital channel fixed to the inner wall of the sphere. They swing back and forth continuously connected to each other by their connecting axis. The curvy orbital channel compares to a sinus-curve in transacted form. There are above and below the zero line two wave mountains and two wave valleys for each channel, back and forth for the combustion chamber they mean top dead center (tdc) and bottom dead center (bdc). The ring-form electrical Rotor of the generator (permanent magnet) is connected to the rotary piston. The stator of the generator is placed with very little distance to it and statically fixed to the spherical housing. It shows a number of field windings. Since 1991 the educated flow engineer works on development of more efficient combustion engines. The patented designs lead to the realisation and making of the prototype of the spherical engine (in german: Kugelmotor) from inside his Technology company. Dr. Huettlin is majority shareholder and president of the board of Innomot AG, St. Erhard, Switzerland. Innomot distributes the licences of the patents specific to the novel engine. Dr. Huettlin (67 years) worked with Albert-Ludwigs-University in city of Freiburg on Breisgau for many years in the fields of pharmaceutical technology and Biopharmacy. The departments lead by Prof. Bauer and later Prof. Schubert. For his life contributions in the field of pharmaceutical technology he has gained many honours and awards worldwide. WOP
