BASF discovered a classic over 50 years ago in expandable polystyrene (EPS). Under the tradename Styropor, EPS is now the solution for efficient insulation and safe packaging worldwide. THE VITAL DIFFERENCE can be seen with the naked eye in the silver-grey colour. In Neopor, graphite is added to the material, absorbing and reflecting heat radiation and improving the insulating performance of EPS by up to 20 percent. Editorial WITH NEOPOR, BASF has taken the classic Styropor a step further. This new material for modern insulating materials is foamed just like Styropor and processed to boards and moulded parts. PRODUCTS MADE FROM BASF s NEOPOR are an economic investment in the future and add to the value of a property.

3 small, RoUnD, black one MaTeRIal, ManY applications neopor Neopor is composed of small black beads of polystyrene (EPS) granules containing blowing agent which makes it expandable. BASF produces this unique material which is processed by foam manufacturers into insulating materials for a wide range of different applications. up to insulates better THese black beads are foamed by converters on conventional EPS machines and processed to silver-grey foam blocks and moulded parts with up to 0 percent better insulating performance than conventional EPS. The blocks are then cut to boards of different thicknesses. neopor InsUlaTIng MaTeRIals offer greater insulating performance and up to 50 percent lower use of materials than conventional EPS, helping environmental conservation and saving money. Environmentally-friendly Neopor insulating materials do not contain CFCs, HCFCs, HFCs or other halogenated cell gases. They contain air as the cell gas, which guarantees the preservation of the thermal conductivity throughout the life of the construction. Neopor insulating materials therefore represent a modern, environmentally-aware lifestyle. We call it innovation in insulation. 3Neopor Innovation in Insulation

Excellent thermal insulation of roofs, exterior walls, floors and basements is the cornerstone of low energy consumption. When it comes to new construction and to the renovation of existing buildings, Neopor offers ideal insulation solutions for almost all components. insulation for post and beam construction insulation behind curtain walls 4

5 saving energy and MoneY Many older buildings have a heat requirement of over 00 kwh/(m a). Expressed in terms of heating oil, this means that approximately 0 liters of fuel are needed during one heating period per square meter of living space per year. The corresponding gas equivalent would be about 0 m 3 of gas per square meter per year. THeRMogRaPHIc IMage of a HoUsIng UnIT The yellow-red areas indicate increased heat loss through poorly insulated parts of the building. The blue areas have been insulated with materials made of Neopor. Consequently, a single-family house with 150 m of heated living space and a heat requirement of 00 kwh/(m a) consumes approximately 3000 liters of heating oil or 3000 m 3 of gas per heating period. These consumption figures can be considerably reduced by means of energy-related improvement measures. Studies have shown that energy savings of more than 50 percent can easily be achieved through thermal insulation (source: Institut Wohnen und Umwelt). The money spent exclusively for the thermal insulation is often already recouped after just one heating period. The benefits to the environment are self-evident. cavity InsUlaTIon exterior InsUlaTIon (etics) InsUlaTIng concrete forms (Icf) InTeRIoR InsUlaTIon InsUlaTIon behind curtain Walls Applications for Neopor 5

6 cavity InsUlaTIon InTeRIoR InsUlaTIon In new construction, double outer walls provide ideal possibilities from an architectural and physical stand-point. Insulating materials made of Neopor can be employed for back-ventilated masonry as well as for purely cavity insulation without back-ventilation. Internal thermal insulation achieves very good insulation results for new construction or renovation work wherever external thermal insulation is not an option. Spaces that have to be heated up quickly or only for brief periods of time definitely benefit from interior thermal insulation. low water absorption durable and dimensionally stable high heat-storing capacity good weathering protection rooms heat up quickly less energy consumption simple and cost-effective execution higher surface temperature Applications for Neopor In double-wall masonry, the space between masonry inner and outer leaf is limited. Owing to the low thermal conductivity of insulating materials made of Neopor, a relatively higher insulating effect can be achieved. Outer leaf (Air layer) Cavity insulation made of Neopor Anchoring Inner leaf Plaster Composite panels made of Neopor, which can be installed all the way up to the ceiling, are particularly convenient. When professionally sealed, they form an ideal substrate for painting and wallpapering work as well as for laying tiles. An assessment of the physical structure of the outer wall is recommended. Window soffits, floors and interior wall joints should likewise be insulated in order to reduce the formation of thermal bridges. Special panels made of Neopor with low dynamic stiffness can also improve sound insulation. Exterior plaster Concrete wall Interior insulation made of Neopor Adhesive (Condensation barrier) Inside cladding 6

7 exterior InsUlaTIon (etics) InsUlaTIon behind curtain Walls Thermal insulation composite systems are a highly suitable and cost-effective type of thermal insulation for new construction and for renovation projects. In addition to providing thermal insulation, exterior walls have to fulfill additional requirements having to do with structural engineering, acoustic and fire protection, weather protection and air-tightness. Back-ventilated curtain walls consist of a substructure, insulating material, an air layer and facade covering. They are used for design reasons and also due to safety considerations of a technical nature. The exterior walls can be tailor-made to match the characteristics of a given building. thinner insulation material, higher insulation coefficient exterior components free of thermal bridges non-glare work in case of direct sunlight simple handling, ease of processing permanently dry thermal insulation individualized facade design good weather protection quick and dry installation This type of insulation protects the load-bearing inner shell or the existing exterior wall against thermal loads and it also provides protection against the weather. Thanks to the outstanding heat-insulating properties of panels made of Neopor, better insulation coefficients can be achieved with thinner insulation materials. The exterior insulation with insulating materials made of Neopor is installed on the outside of the wall and coated with a reinforced special exterior plaster. Mineral-based as well as dispersion-bonded exterior plaster systems can be used. Plaster Structure, for example, masonry, concrete, etc. Adhesive Exterior insulation (ETICS made of Neopor ) Reinforcement Exterior plaster The two-layer system of a back-ventilated curtain wall systematically separates the functions of weather protection and insulation, thus ensuring thermal insulation that is permanently dry and functional. The back-ventilation reliably eliminates any moisture stemming from the structure itself or from the utilization of the building. Thanks to its outstanding insulating capacity, Neopor is the material of choice for use in this facade system. Weather protection (facade covering) Back-ventilation Thermal insulation made of Neopor Construction, for example, masonry, concrete, etc. 7Applications for Neopor

8 cavity InsUlaTIon (loose beads) The expanded beads made of Neopor were specifically developed as loose insulation for cavities in double-leaf masonry. They can easily be blown into the air space that is present in existing buildings or, in the case of new construction, they can be incorporated between two wall shells. Care should be taken to ensure that there are no mortar residues in the shell cavity in order to prevent thermal bridges. ageing-resistant and rot-proof thermal insulation without gaps insulation of areas that are difficult to access suitable for old and new buildings Applications for Neopor With this approach, the expanded beads made of Neopor are blown by machines through a number of holes drilled into the air space. The beads can be blown in either from the inside of the room or from the outside. This technique makes it possible to reliably and uniformly insulate even hollow spaces that are difficult to access. The holes are simply sealed again after the insulating work has been finished. Outer leaf Cavity insulation (loose beads) made of Neopor Anchoring Inner leaf Plaster 8

9 InsUlaTIng concrete forms (Icf) Insulating concrete forms (ICF) are hollow foam forms installed at the construction site and filled with concrete. ICFs made of Neopor are suitable for all kinds of components that require thermal insulation and ease of processing. They are employed as wall and floor elements for single-family houses as well as multi-storey buildings. no thermal bridges low weight simple and fast handling high degree of thermal insulation Formwork elements made of Neopor make it possible to build and insulate exterior walls at the same time. The elements are available in various wall thicknesses and designs. Thanks to their good thermal-insulating properties, double-sided ICFs made of Neopor are well-suited for the construction of low-energy and passive houses. 10 0,045 0,040 0,037 0,035 0,032 0,030 EPS Neopor 0, Density [kg/m 3 ] THERMAL INSULATION The excellent effect of Neopor insulating materials offers architects, engineers, manual workers and builders significant advantages in building practice. The Neopor infrared absorbers or reflectors considerably reduce thermal conductivity and the permeability of the material with regard to heat is lower than in normal insulating boards. THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY Vastly improved insulating effects can be achieved with Neopor, particularly with very low bulk densities. The diagram shows that Neopor insulating materials with a bulk density of 15 kg/m 3 for example achieve a thermal conductivity of W/(m K). In normal EPS with the same bulk density, the thermal conductivity is W/(m K). Additional information SOUND PROTECTION Elasticized insulating materials made of Neopor not only account for energy savings but also considerably improve the sound protection of buildings. Studies have shown that the sound-insulating properties of thermal insulation composite systems with elasticized Neopor bring about an improvement of the sound-insulation coefficient of up to 4 db, depending on the solid wall, the panel thickness and the type of stucco or plaster. THERMAL INSULATION IN COMPARISON The ecoefficiency analysis looks at products and processes from both the economic and the ecological point of view. The result of an evaluation of this nature in the example of the thermal insulation composite system (ETICS) with a U-value of 0.29 W/(m 2 K) is shown in the diagram. The major advantage of Neopor insulating boards lies in the reduced use of material of up to 50 percent, giving savings in terms of costs and resources, which in turn relieves pressure on the environment. Compared to alternative products, Neopor insulating materials have economic advantages with lower environmental impact and therefore offer ecoefficient insulating solutions for up-to-date thermal insulation. FIRE PROTECTION Neopor insulating materials are produced in accordance with the requirements of European standard DIN EN and are classed in Euroclass E in accordance with DIN EN and B1 in accordance with DIN benefit obtained from using 1 m 2 of the composite thermal insulation system environmental burden (standardized) Mineral wool High eco-efficiency Neopor Styropor Low eco-efficiency costs (standardized) alternatives examined: Neopor Styropor mineral wool Eco-efficiency analysis of thermal insulation composite systems used in the Three-Liter House in the Brunck neighbourhood of Ludwigshafen, Germany in the year 2000, confirmed by the Öko-Institut in Freiburg and by the TÜV (German Technical Inspection Association). 10
