1 ISA 390 by ISA International Shipyards Ancona, Andrea Vallicelli and Studio Massari I nternational Shipyard Ancona is a yard that sticks by its pledge to provide Owners with large innovative yachts that express personality and luxury. This 39-metre craft is the result of the yard s desire to propose its own changes, without being restricted by the diktats of current trends. This boat has been devised and designed proactively, and is far from being a mere exercise in style and taste. The previous 48-metre model featured an arch that formed a continuous link from the stern to the upper deck, creating a staircase that not only looked impressive, but also made a real difference to the way people could move around on board. With the 39-metre model, the yard has taken developments further. To do so, it called upon the services of Andrea Vallicelli to design the exteriors. Vallicelli has enjoyed a long career in the sailing yacht sector, with boats that not only offer high performance, but are also very easy on the eye (Ed. he designed my first boat). And they re certainly designed by someone who knows the sea. Hence this new approach has abandoned the classic tectonic layout (with decks placed one over the other) in favour of a stereotomic design. Just as a sculptor has to draw the life out of the marble, to create a form that in some way is already contained within the marble itself, the designer of this boat has sought to design, out of space, a form that sits well with his idea of seafaring. How does this design approach come through in the finished product? It is based upon at least three fundamental elements: the visual centre set back on the stern; an aggressive, streamlined bow; and the lines linking the stern and the rollbar (the arch on the 48- metre model) continued by the two spoilers connecting the main deck with the upper deck.

The final result of the sum of these three apparently contrasting elements offers an extremely balanced appearance and a compact, lightweight feel. However, the designer wanted to underline his sailing roots with two further stylistic features. The line that joins the sun deck to the underbody slopes down like the sterns of the old IORs: wide and sleek. The deckhouse seems sunk into the topsides, underlining the sense of safety and aerodynamic qualities typical of sailing ships. Last but not least, the bulwarks and sheer recall those of a planing yacht, but in actual fact this 39 metres has been conceived as a displacement yacht dedicated to the pleasure of sailing. When it came to the interiors, the yard commissioned Studio Massari. Like the exterior designer, Studio Massari sought to create an environment that was as close as possible to seafaring life, especially life on board big sailing ships. Therefore, rather than seeking to get the most out of the available space, the designers opted for open areas that leave wide, unencumbered passages free which is not to say any space was wasted. For example, in the main ward room (the term traditionally used on sailing ships), uninterrupted side corridors lead up to the dining table. This is not the typical formal main saloon with conversation corners, but rather a single space in which open groups can converse or enjoy onboard entertainment according to the needs of the moment. As though to highlight this sailing-influenced design philosophy, we find staved ceilings and, at the sides and above the vast windows, a vaulted ceiling that recalls those of the old clippers. The materials are, of course, all natural: linen, jute and lots of wood. One interesting detail is that the door handles are constructed without screws, to a traditional design

The sun deck and upper deck come in a standard version, unlike the main deck, which is available in two versions (with or without a gym on the lower deck). Whichever option is chosen, the full-beam master stateroom remains at the bow, with private bathroom, walk-in wardrobe and a desk separate from the office. Meanwhile, the lower deck is offered in three versions (as well as with or without gym): the first two have all the headboards facing aft. The third option comprises a double room with the beds facing forward, another facing the stern and the third on the portside bulwark. This is certainly an unconventional layout, but one that is particularly interesting as it places the accent on privacy. The steel/aluminium body, with 8 metres maximum beam and 4.2 metres draught, has a good length/breadth ratio which allows the vessel to sail without excessive rolling and pitching, even when lying at anchor in the roadstead. The recommended motorization consists of two Cat C32s that propel this displacement yacht to a top speed of 15 knots and a cruising speed of 13 knots, with a range of around 3000 miles. There s no doubt that this design is all about sailing in safety and comfort, allowing Owners who take pleasure in innovative design to enjoy all that life at sea has to offer. Main deck Lower deck Sun deck Upper deck Main deck Lower deck Alongside the ISA 390, ISA is also offering an eco-friendly version with hybrid diesel/electric propulsion. This comes as a response to the growing need for more environmental concern in an increasingly green-minded motor-yachting market. And indeed the main objective of this new variant, named ISA 390 ZERO, is to reduce the environmental impact deriving from diesel engines, as well as noticeably improving the quality of life on board, whatever the operating conditions of the yacht. This innovative project was developed by ISA in partnership with two highprofile international partners: the multinational Siemens AG, and the Dutch firm MarQuip BV. The partners made an important contribution with their specialist know how and state-of-the-art solutions. MarQuip BV is a firm specialising in exhaust gas systems, and has worked with ISA in the past on three 46.5-metre yachts and 480/500/600/630/retrofitting 470 models, providing the design and the manufacturing of silencers, compensators and AVMs of the main engines. For the ecological model ISA 390 ZERO, MarQuip developed one of the cleanest and quietest exhaust systems now available on the market: a complete green set with exhaust systems controls. The system combines an integrated catalytic converter inside a silencer, a soot trap with an automatic burner and a water separator/scrubber. Catalysts on all diesel engines, assure total control of gas emissions, drastically reducing substances that are harmful to the environment, as well as soot particulate and, at the same time, diesel odour. A soot filler with an automatike burner is installed on one main generator, assuring a complete gas cleaning while the yacht is at anchor. For the ISA 390 ZERO ( zero as in zero emissions ), ISA also opted for a diesel/electric hybrid propulsion system by Siemens AG. The yacht will be fitted with a Siemens SIS HIP CIS (Completely Integrated Solution) Eco Prop System, an eco-friendly propulsion solution for green yachting created by Siemens Industry Division - Siemens Marine Technologies. Alongside the two main diesel engines and two diesel generator engines by Caterpillar, two Siemens shaft generators/electric motors will be installed: these are mechanically connected through the two ZF gearboxes to the main diesel engines and propellers; while through the Siemens inverters they are electrically connected to the generator diesel engines and the high tech battery banks. In the configuration designed for ISA 390 ZERO, the Siemens SISHIP CIS Eco Prop System will also be completed by an integrated automation system (IAS) and a power management system (PMS), which are able to network-manage power generation and power distribution. Due to the advanced technology used on this yacht, no diesel/electric propulsion system specialist engineer is required on board, since ISA and Siemens Marine have a worldwide assistance service office on-call round the clock for technical support and remote diagnosis programming, with a safe-encrypted connection between the yacht and ISA/Siemens engineers. Unlike the ISA 390, which has normal sized diesel engines and generators, standard tech battery banks and a conventional power management system, the hybrid variant ISA 390 ZERO has normal sized diesel engines and oversize generators alongside her shaft generators/electric motors, high-tech battery banks and advanced power management system. ISA 390 ZERO s diesel/electric hybrid propulsion system means that she has four propulsion modes and two anchor modes. The four propulsion modes

Very low emissions: diesel engines off, one diesel generator off and one diesel generator on; the diesel generator drives propellers and thrusters through shaft electric motors; the diesel generator charges batteries and supplies users; maximum speed when underway is 4 knots. Zero emissions: diesel engines off and diesel generators off; batteries drive propellers and thrusters through shaft electric motors; batteries supply users; no emissions, maximum speed when underway is 6 knots for 3 hours. The two anchor modes. Very low emissions: diesel engines off, one diesel generator off and one diesel generator on; the diesel generator charges batteries and supplies users. Zero emissions: diesel engines off and diesel generators off; the batteries supply users; no emissions, at anchor for 8 hours. As with the ISA 390, this green variant is also based on naval architecture developed in-house by the ISA Technical Department, and it too will be built using steel for the hull and aluminium for the superstructure. The yacht is compliant with RINA Italian Naval Register regulations, as well as being MCA compliant. As for her dimensions, she too has a length overall of 39 metres (128 ft), with a length at waterline of 34 metres (111 7 ) and maximum beam of 8 metres (26 3 ). When fully loaded, the maximum draught of the hull is 2.4 metres (7 11 ); moreover, the yacht displaces 343 tons when fully loaded (more than 757,174 lbs), and 312 tons (nearly 688,741 lbs) when half loaded. The displacing hull has a bulbous bow and a longitudinal skeg; the hull has a bowthruster and sternthruster, each with 75 kws of power, as well as an electrohydraulic twin-fin stabilizer system. The engine room will be installed with two CAT C32 ACERT TTA, C rating V12 engines. Each engine, with a total displacement of 32.1 litres (1959 cc) has a maximum output of 1300 bhp (970 bkw) supplied at 1800 rpm. These are combined with two ZF reduction gearboxes and connected via a stainless steel transmission shaft to two five-blade fixed-pitch propellers. As for her performance, when half-loaded ISA 390 ZERO will be able to reach a top speed of nearly 15 knots, and maintain a cruising speedof13knots. Travelling at her cruising speed, the yacht s range is 2900 nautical miles, also thanks to her fuel tanks, which can hold 59 thousand litres (more than 15,608 US gallons). Unlike the ISA 390, in her engine room the ZERO variant has a system from Siemens, Industry Division - Marine Technologies: the SISHIP CIS Eco Prop System. This is set up with two compact-size Eco Prop Electrical Drives, each of which consists of one 200-kW shaft generator/ electric motor and one 250-kVA inverter. Each of the units, through the inverter, is electrically connected to a diesel generator. And through the special clutch, each of them is mechanically connected to the ZF gearbox of a main diesel engine and therefore also mechanically connected to the transmission shaft of the propulsion propeller. This difference also determines a difference in the power supply systems of the two yachts. In fact, the ISA 390 has two triphase 50-Hz generator sets, silenced with sound shield enclosures and based on six-cylinder inline diesel generator engines by Cummins Onan Marine (QD series, model 80MDDCJ). Each of these displaces 6.8 litres (415 cc), and each supplies 80 kw / 100 kva at 1500 rpm. Meanwhile, the ZERO variant will be fitted with two triphase 50-Hz generator sets, silenced with sound shield enclosures, based upon Caterpillar six-cylinder inline diesel generator engines (CAT C/ TA B rating). Each of these has 7.24 litres of displacement (442 cc), and each supplies 205 kw / 256,25 kva at 2400 rpm. The battery systems of the two yachts also differ: the ISA 390 ZERO has high-tech battery banks by Valence, with LFMP-type (Lithium Iron Magnesium Phosphate) unit batteries. Flaviano Perelli 56 57
