6 SCHOOL CODE OF CONDUCT GEDRAGSKODE VAN LEERDERS Die gedragskode is gebaseer op die beginsels van liefde, respek en bedagsaamheid. Die skool erken en respekteer die regte van die individuele leerder, opvoeder en ouer. Die skool verwag van die individu ook respek vir die regte van die skool om n omgewing daar te stel waarin almal kan onderrig, leer en groei. Die volgende gedragskode sal daardie omgewing verseker: 1. Dit word van HMS-leerders verwag om beleefd en bedagsaam te wees in alle handelinge met ander persone. 2. In alle omstandighede word die hoogste standaarde van eerlikheid, integriteit en opregtheid verwag van HMSleerders. 3. Van HMS-leerders word verwag om deur netheid van hul persoon, korrektheid in die dra van die uniform en deur goeie gedrag deur alle tye en op alle plekke hulle lojaliteit aan die skool te betoon. 4. Van leerders word verwag om met versigtigheid en verantwoordelikheid om te sien na hul eiendom, ander se eiendom en die skool se eiendom (insluitende geld, die geboue en die terrein) en om enige skade of verlies te vergoed. Waardevolle items, byvoorbeeld selfone en kameras, moet nooit in die tas of sportsak gelaat word nie. Om te verseker dat alle leerders die interpretasie van die bostaande gedragskode verstaan, sal die reëls jaarliks aan elke leerder gegee word. Hierdie reëls kan van tyd tot tyd aangepas en gewysig word. DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURE 1. Minor infringements of the regulations will be dealt with in an appropriate manner: a reprimand, some suitable productive task or report on the infringement page. 2. Repetitive infringements may be dealt with more severely: report to senior staff or a letter to the parents. 3. Serious breaches of the School Code of Conduct will be dealt with by the principal or the Management Council. Serious offences include: Being absent from assembly, lessons, sport or activities without permission. Noticeable changes in hair colour. Cheating; dishonesty; stealing; insolence; or disobedience. Being in possession of any unlawful substance or any potentially harmful substance or article whilst on school premises, in school uniform or on a school outing. Behaving in a way which could cause physical, mental or emotional harm to any other learner. PARTICIPATION IN THE SCHOOL PROGRAMME 1. A learner must participate in the educational programmes as prescribed by the WCED, unless exemption has been granted by the Department. 2. Once a learner has decided to participate in an extramural activity of her free will, she has to adhere to the rules and fulfil all her responsibilities and fixtures punctually, unless the principal exempts her from such activities. 3. Learners may not make use of any school implements or facilities, including those for sport, after official hours without the permission of the principal. Learners may not be on the school premises after school hours except at organised school activities. GEDRAG EN OPTREDE VAN LEERDERS ALGEMEEN 1. No intimidation and/or bullying will be allowed on the school premises. Learners who do not adhere to this instruction will immediately be dealt with by the school management and/or the Governing Body. 4. Leerders word nie sonder verlof voor skool, tydens pouses of na skool in die skoollokale of klaskamers toegelaat nie. In die hoofgebou beweeg die leerders in stilte. 5. 7 7. Skooleiendom of enige iets by die skool wat die eiendom van iemand anders is, mag nie beskadig, ontsier of besoedel word nie. Papiere, ensovoorts moet in die houers wat daarvoor bestem is, gegooi word. As skooleiendom per ongeluk gebreek of beskadig word, moet dit onmiddellik gerapporteer word. 8. Leerlinge word nie toegelaat om kougom op die skoolterrein te kou nie. Geen verversings word in die onderriglokale toegelaat nie. Geen waterbottels word in die rekenaarlokale toegelaat nie. 9. No learner may possess, use or distribute anything that can be smoked, drugs, alcoholic drinks or pornographic magazines or material while on school premises, in school buildings, representing the school in a group or while dressed in school uniform. Inspections of learners bags and/or possessions will be conducted randomly and on a regular basis. 10. During evening functions learners must be either inside the hall or off the school premises. Only learners of the school are allowed to attend school functions which are not open to the public. During intervals at evening functions learners may not wander around on the school premises. 11. Learners who have been absent must bring a letter to the school, written and signed by a parent or guardian, in which the reason for her absence is given. Children who are not feeling well or have an infectious disease must please be nursed at home until they have recovered. 12. Learners may not leave the school premises during school hours without permission from their grade head. Hostel premises are not part of the school premises and learners are not allowed to be on hostel premises during school hours. We unfortunately do not have a sick room facility at school. Therefore, when learners fall ill they should report to the office to ask for permission to go home. Permission will be granted by die grade head or deputy principal after which the secretary will contact the parents telephonically to request them to fetch their child. 13. If learners are late for school, they must report at the office to state the reason for being late. Their names will be taken down and three late arrivals (without a genuine reason) will result in disciplinary action. Parents are responsible for learners arriving on time for school and must ensure that their daughters learn to be prompt. 14. Requests for leave of absence from school for unavoidable reasons or for medical appointments which cannot be made after school, must be addressed to the principal in writing. Permission will NOT be granted for learners to be absent from school in order to apply for a driver s licence or complete the driver s licence tests. Parents are requested to arrange auditions, modelling assignments and medical appointments after school hours or during school holidays. 16. Parents are asked to restrict messages to learners during school hours to those of AN URGENT NATURE. We cannot guarantee that learners will come and collect their messages. If learners leave books, lunch or sport kits at home it is wisest not to deliver it to her she will quickly learn to be more responsible if she has to bear the consequences of her forgetfulness. 17. Cell phones are very handy instruments for parents to stay in touch with their children. It can, however, also lead to antisocial behaviour amongst learners. During normal school hours and during class time cell phones are switched off and kept out of sight this includes break times. Parents must please refrain from sending messages or calling their children during school hours. Teachers will confiscate cell phones used during school hours it is kept in the school safe for two weeks or a fee of R200 is payable immediately. Teachers may request learners to use their cell phones to search the internet this happens on instruction only. 18. No ipods or MP3-players allowed at school. If used during class time it will be confiscated and only be returned after a fee of R50 is paid. 19. Indien n leerling n skootrekenaar en/of tablet na die skool bring, is sy self vir die veiligheid daarvan verantwoordelik. Die skool aanvaar geen aanspreeklikheid vir skade en/of verlies daarvan nie. Gebruik van hierdie elektroniese toerusting in die klasse is met die toestemming van die onderwyser. KLASKAMERS EN LOKALE 1. In alle omstandighede moet daar n leerkultuur heers. Wanneer n opvoeder weens siekte of enige ander rede nie by die klas kan wees nie, moet leerders stil voortgaan met hulle werk. 2. Die biblioteke word slegs onder toesig van n opvoeder besoek met die doel om boeke uit te neem of naslaanwerk te doen. Gedurende pouses sal mediaprefekte aan diens wees en leerders moet van die geleentheid gebruik maak om tydskrifte te gaan lees. 3. It is expected from all learners to keep their classrooms neat and tidy. No papers or other materials may be put underneath the desks. 4. Alhoewel dit gesond is om baie water te drink, is dit steurend in klasse wanneer leerders voortdurend water uit hulle waterbottels drink. Leerders kan tydens klaswisseling en gedurende pouses hierdie goeie gewoontes nakom, maar nie tydens klas nie.

8 ASSEMBLIES 1. We strive at maintaining a pious atmosphere at all meetings. Therefore learners are not to giggle, talk or behave disrespectfully in any way at these meetings. Learners are to enter and leave the hall in neat rows. The School Song and National Anthem should be learned by heart in both Afrikaans and English as well as Nkosi Sikele i Afrika in Xhosa. While singing these songs all persons stand at attention. 2. We would like to congratulate all achievers during assemblies. We request parents and learners to inform us of all achievements in writing and to provide us with the medals and/or certificates received. We need this information on Monday, before the close of day, to enable us to plan the assembly programme. SWIMMING POOL 1. Only one piece bathing costumes are permitted. 2. Everybody MUST always wear a bathing cap. 3. Nobody may go into the hall or walk on the school premises in their bathing costumes. Hostel learners must be properly clothed when walking from the hostel to the swimming pool. 4. Geen leerder mag in die swembad wees voordat die verantwoordelike persoon opgedaag het nie. No Tippex may be used. 3. Learners may only use blue or black ink pens. 4. Sportoefeninge vir Hoërskoolleerders vind tydens eksamen plaas net na die skool uitkom. 6. Elke leerder moet seker maak dat sy haar benodigdhede (byvoorbeeld penne, krammetjies, uitveër, sakrekenaar, liniaal, ensovoorts) byderhand het voor die eksamen in aanvang neem. Dit mag nie onderling geleen word nie. 7. Geen skrifte mag voor die geskrewe tyd (die einde van n sessie) ingelewer word nie. 8. Handboeke, notas en selfone moet voor die aanvang van die eksamen op die aangewese plekke geplaas word. GEEN materiaal wat tot oneerlikheid lei of wat verdag mag voorkom, mag in die eksamenlokaal ingebring word nie. Indien n leerder tydens die eksamen oneerlik is, kan alle eksamenpunte nietig verklaar word. 9. Pages of answers must please be stapled together in the correct order at the top left hand corner. 10. A margin must be drawn on the right hand side of the folio. TEXTBOOKS AND STATIONERY At the beginning of each year learners are issued with the required textbooks. Learners must take care of these books. All textbooks must be covered in thick plastic and other books must be covered in paper and/or plastic with the learner s name clearly visible. No writing or underlining is allowed in textbooks. At the end of each year books must be handed in. Lost or damaged books must be paid for by the learner. A blazer is a compulsory item of winter uniform from Grade 7 upwards. In summer the V-neck pullover is acceptable without a blazer. o Die romp moet gerieflik om die middellyf pas en mag nooit teruggevou word nie. Wanneer die leerling kniel is die romp 15cm bokant die knie. o Sport oefeninge word bygewoon in goedgekeurde HMS oefendrag wat by die skoolboetiek beskikbaar is. o After sport activities learners must leave the school in full school uniform or the correct team kit or the official school tracksuit and sport shoes. o Learners are expected to be responsible for their own property. All clothes or other possessions worn or used on the school premises must be clearly marked. o Clothes left at school will be placed in the pound and learners will have to pay a fine to regain them. Items not collected within one term will be sold by the PTA. Tattoos must at all times be covered with clothing.

Tydens groot sport- en kultuurgeleenthede mag hulle n HMS bemarkingsknopie dra. o Geen vorm van grimering word toegelaat nie en slegs Gr.12-leerlinge mag kleurlose naellak dra. o ONLY bottle green alice bands, small towelling bands and hair ribbons may be used as hair accessories. Discreet hair clips may be used. These accessories are available from the school boutique. o Kleur van hare in n natuurlike haarkleur met afwasbare kleursjampoo is toelaatbaar mits dit net een skakering ligter of donkerder as die normale haarkleur is. o Hare mag slegs een kleur wees, dit wil sê geen highlights nie. o Leerders mag slegs n bolla dra indien dit nie van vooraf sigbaar is nie. o Braids (etniese vlegsels of etniese haarinsetsels) moet netjies gevleg wees en nie n dikte van 7mm oorskry nie. Alle reëls ten opsigte van hare is ook van toepassing op braids. o Long hair must be tied back if it touches the collar and fringes must be cut to clear the eyebrows.
