When the Electri-SAFE actuator is mounted with positioner housing up, and the actuator mounted inline with the valve piping. Then the CLOSED POSITION = FULL CLOCKWISE (CW), and the OPEN POSITION = FULL COUNTERCLOCKWISE (CCW). DESCRIPTION /McCANNA Series DP 72 actuators are electrohydraulic quarter-turn valve actuators which can be set to hold positions between full closed and full open. These units feature a normally open solenoid valve which returns the actuator to its initial, or fail-safe, position when electrical power is removed from the actuator. The actuator design utilizes a double-rack, single-pinion concept, with each rack integrally cast to a piston. Both pistons are supported and centered by large, stainless steel guide rods. A /McCANNA Electri-SAFE Electronic Positioning Circuit board is used to set positions between full closed and full open. It is mounted in the positioning housing attached to the top of the actuator. The positioner board has many programmable features and custom settings. These are outlined in the Technical and Programming Reference Manual. ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS CAUTION: The Electri-SAFE DataFlo Digital Electronic Positioner is sensitive to electrical noise on signal or supply lines and in the environment. For maximum positioner sensitivity, the electrical noise level should be as low as possible. Follow installation, calibration and adjustment guidelines carefully and use shielded wire for all signal wiring. Flowserve recommends that all products that must be stored prior to installation be stored indoors, in an environment suitable for human occupancy. Do not store product in areas where exposure to relative humidity above 85%, acid or alkali fumes, radiation above normal background, ultraviolet light, or temperatures above 120 F or below 40 F may occur. Do not store within 50 feet of any source of ozone. Temperature and humidity are the two most important factors that determine the usefulness and life of electronic equipment. Temperature Operating solid-state electronic equipment near or beyond its high temperature rating is the primary cause for most failures. It is, therefore, very important that the user be aware of and take into consideration, factors that affect the temperature at which the electronic circuits will operate. Operating an electronic device at or below its low temperature rating generally results in a unit operating poorly or not at all, but it will usually resume normal operation as soon as rated operating temperatures are reached. Low temperature problems can be easily cured by addition of a thermostatically controlled heater in the positioner housing.
The Worcester/McCANNA DataFlo Digital Electronic Positioner is rated for operation between -40 F (with heater and thermostat) and 150 F. Humidity Most electronic equipment has a reasonable degree of inherent humidity protection and additional protection is supplied by the manufacturer, in the form of moisture-proofing and fungicide coatings. Such protection, and the 3 to 4 watts of heat generated by the circuit board assembly, will generally suffice for environments where the average relative humidity is in the area of 80% or less and ambient temperatures are in the order of 70 F average. Where relative humidity is consistently 80 to 90% and the ambient temperature is subject to large variations, consideration should be given to installing a heater and thermostat option in the enclosure. The heater should not increase the enclosure temperature to the point where the circuit board assembly s temperature rating of 150 F is exceeded. In those instances where the internal heater would bring the circuit board s operating temperature near or above its maximum rating, the user might consider purging the enclosure with a cool, dry gas. The initial costs can usually be paid off quickly in the form of greatly extended equipment life, low maintenance needs, and much less process downtime. Input Circuit Noise Protection Shielded wiring should be used as conductors for all signal input circuit wiring regardless of length. The shields should never be used in place of one of the input wires, and the shields should be grounded to equipment housings at one end of the wiring run only. Grounding both ends of shielding can eliminate the shielding benefits because of current ground loops. If two or more shielded cables come to the Positioner from different locations, ground the shields at the Positioner. a WARNING: SERIES 72 ACTUATORS ARE ELECTRO-MECHANICAL DEVICES SUBJECT TO NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. ACTUATOR LIFE IS DEPENDENT UPON APPLICATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS. IF APPLIED IN HAZARDOUS SERVICES SUCH AS, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, MEDIA TEMPERATURE EXTREMES, TOXINS, FLAMMABLE, OR OTHER SERVICES WHERE IMPROPER OR INCOMPLETE OPERATION COULD PRODUCE A SAFETY HAZARD, IT IS INCUMBENT UPON THE SYSTEM DESIGNER AND THE USER TO PROVIDE PROPER WARNING DEVICES SUCH AS TEMPERATURE SENSORS, OXYGEN SENSORS AND FLOW SENSORS. INSTALLATION Mechanical Assembly of Actuator to a or McCANNA Valve: The Series DP 72 actuator assembly is in its full clockwise position when no electrical power is supplied. Applying electrical power and a position input signal will cause the actuator to rotate in a counterclockwise rotation. The Series DP 72 actuator is a heavy unit. Make sure that the unit and the valve it is mounted to is supported properly in accordance with good piping practices. When mounting the actuator to a non- Worcester/McCANNA valve, please refer to the manufacturer s recommendations for installation and operation. The actuator is normally installed with its major axis parallel to the pipe line (this is mandatory when mounting actuator to 90 V1 diverter/three-way (D44 & T44) valves and CPT valves). The actuator can be oriented above, beside, or below the valve without affecting its operation. Actuators come with an ISO locating ring used for optional ISO mounting. For mounting to 818/828 Series valves, insert ISO locating ring into groove on bottom of actuator before attaching to bracket. Note: Ring can be permanently held in groove by applying Loctite to ring before inserting in groove. Determine mode of operation desired (normally open or normally closed) of the valve. Determine desired quadrant for bracket attachment and direction of mounting of actuator (in-line or cross-line). Fail-Safe Actuators - The normal method of mounting is to have the actuator in-line with the pipeline and the valve and actuator in the power off/fail-closed position. For FAIL-OPEN cross-line operation, rotate the valve ball and stem 90, so coupling lines up with actuator shaft. Mount actuator cross line to pipe line. For FAIL-OPEN in-line operation using an in-line coupling, rotate the valve ball and stem 90, so coupling lines up with actuator shaft. Mount actuator in-line with the pipeline. Attach mounting bracket to actuator using four (4) cap screws and lockwashers provided in mounting kit. To avoid any damage to the Series 72 aluminum actuator body, ONLY the proper length screws supplied with the mounting kit should be used. For small size top-mount style valves, attach the mounting bracket such that bracket nameplate will be to the side of the valve. Attach bracket/actuator assembly to valve as follows: CAUTION: Ball valves can trap pressurized media in the cavity. If it is necessary to remove any valve body bolts, stem nuts, or remove valve from the line, and if the valve is or has been in operation, make sure there is NO pressure to or in the valve and operate valve one full cycle. It is not necessary to remove any valve body bolts or remove valve from line in order to mount actuator on valve models: 44 ( 1 /4"-2"), 45 (2 1 /2"-4"), 51/52 ( 1 /2"-4"), 151/301 (3"-4"), 59 ( 1 /4"-3"), WK70/WK74 and H71 ( 1 /2"-2"), 818/828 (2"-3"), 82/83 ( 1 /2"-3"), 94 ( 1 /2"-4"): Rotate valve ball and stem to position necessary to achieve desired operation. If any valve information is marked on stop plate or handle, it will be necessary to transfer this information to the bracket nameplate. 2 Electri-SAFE DataFlo Digital Electronic Positioner WCAIM2025
For 1 /4"-2" 44, 1 /2"-2" WK70/WK74, 1 /4"-1 1 /2" 59 and 1 /2"-1 1 /2" H71 series top-mount style valves and 1 /2"-2" 51/52 and 1 /2"-1 1 /2" 82/83 Series valves with high-cycle stem packing as standard, remove handle nut, lock washer, handle, separate stop plate (if any), retaining nut and stop pin(s) and discard. Add the two additional Belleville washers provided with the mounting kit. Install with their larger diameter sides touching each other. Add the self-locking nut to the stem and tighten while holding the stem flats with wrench. Tighten until Belleville washers are flat, the nut will bottom, and then back nut off 1 /3 of a turn. The two additional Belleville washers and the self-locking nut are included in the mounting kit. CAUTION: The self-locking stem nut is difficult to tighten, and must fully flatten Belleville washers before backing off. For 2" 59, H71, 82/83, and 2 1 /2" 45, 82/83 series valves, and valves 3" and larger with square stem, remove handle assembly, retaining nut, stop and stop screws. Replace with valve stem spacer and replace retaining nut. If the valve has graphite stem packing, replace the valve stem spacer with two Belleville washers, and replace retaining nut. Belleville washers are installed with their larger diameter sides touching each other. Do not use stem spacer when Belleville washers are used. Using a wrench to prevent stem from turning, tighten retaining nut until stem packing is fully compressed or Bellevilles, if used, are fully flattened, then back off nut 1 /6 turn. Excessive tightening causes higher torque and shorter seal life. Large valves with V51 high cycle stem packing option installed (identified by two Belleville washers installed and handle assembly, stop, and stop screws removed), and 818/828 Series valves do not require stem area disassembly. For 1 /2"-2" 94 valves, remove handle (if any). Do not remove gland plate or gland bolts. For 3"-4" 94 and 2"-3" E818/828 valves, remove handle assembly, stop, and spacer (if any). Do not remove gland plate or gland bolts. For 2"-3" 818/828 valves, remove handle assembly, locking plates and hardware, and stop screw (if any). Do not remove stop plate. Center coupling on valve stem. Lower mounting bracket/actuator assembly over coupling and onto valve, making sure that male actuator shaft engages slot in coupling. Secure bracket to valve using cap screws and lockwashers, or bolts and nuts provided in mounting kit. Tighten securely. For small size top-mount style valves, bracket nameplate will be to side of valve. Install set screws (if any) in the coupling and tighten securely. Electrical Wiring of Actuator and Positioner The actuator housing contains power and switch terminals for field wiring. The terminal strip is for incoming power connectors and optional limit switch wiring for indication of actuator position. Users can use these optional switches for wiring to their indicating lights and/or logic. See wiring label on inside of cover and/or wiring diagram below for power connections. See wiring label on inside of cover and/or technical reference manual for optional switch wiring. All electrical connections and calibration functions should be performed by a qualified individual who is trained in the installation and operation of electrical equipment. All wiring to terminal strips shall be inserted only to mid-point of terminal strip. 120 VOLT AC POWER - minimum required power is 110 volts AC, maximum is 130 volts AC. NOTE: This table shows the minimum rating to prevent inrush current from blowing the fuse. Minimum Fuse Rating for Over Current Protection Actuator Size Voltage Fuse Rating VAC 10 A VAC 10 A Loosen the 12 captive screws and remove the flat cover and gasket on the conduit connection end of the actuator. Remove the red plastic conduit connection plug and attach a suitable conduit pipe to the 3 /4" NPT conduit connection on the actuator limit switch. NOTE: Connections and seals are to meet specifications listed in the National Electrical Code Chapter 5 for the environment in which the actuator will be installed. Use #18 awg wire as a minimum wire size. Attach the AC neutral wire (white) to the terminal strip location labeled 7 and the AC hot wire (black) to the terminal strip location labeled 8. Attach the ground wire to the green colored grounding screw in the actuator housing. Replace the gasket and flat cover, and tighten the 12 captive screws. INPUT SIGNAL The positioner housing contains terminals for field wiring of input signals to operate the actuator. The Digital Positioner signal input circuit is protected by a 1 /16 amp fuse, F1. Location of the fuse is shown on the Digital Electronic Positioner Circuit Board photograph in the Technical Reference Manual. See the Technical Reference Manual for additional detailed input circuit specifications. NOTE: After input signal connections have been made, securely tighten all terminal screws. Keep wiring away from all rotating parts and ensure wires are not pinched when the covers are installed. WCAIM2025 Electri-SAFE DataFlo Digital Electronic Positioner 3
For all Signal Input/Output Connections: Remove the red plastic conduit connection plug and attach a suitable conduit pipe to the 3 /4" NPT conduit connection to the positioner housing. NOTE: Connections and seals are to meet specifications listed in the National Electrical Code Chapter 5 for the environment the actuator will be installed in. Loosen the retained housing cover screws and remove the top cover of the positioner housing. DP72-1, DP72-4, DP72-10 (milliamp Input Signal for Digital Positioner) This Positioner is available for use with the standard milliamp signals: 1 to 5, 4 to 20, and 10 to 50 milliamp. The Positioner board is factory calibrated for one of the three milliamp signal ranges. Comparison of resistance measurements made at terminals B and C against the resistances shown below provides a quick way to determine the milliamp range for which a particular board is calibrated. If fuse F1 is blown, an open circuit will be indicated. 1 to 5 milliamp models approximately 1000 ohms 4 to 20 milliamp models approximately 220 ohms 10 to 50 milliamp models approximately 100 ohms Connect the more positive (+) or High signal lead to positioner terminal B. See wiring label on inside of positioner cover, and/or in appendix of technical reference manual, and/or wiring diagram on following page. Connect the less positive (-) or Common lead to positioner terminal C. Connect one end of the shield wire to the positioner housing. Note that only one end of the shield wire should be connected to a grounded housing. Do not replace the positioner cover until the unit has been calibrated and the unit is operational. See the paragraph for Calibration and Adjustment on the next page. DP72-13, DP72-1K (Potentiometer Input for Digital Positioner) Potentiometer input circuit boards are made in two versions, one for low resistance command circuits - DP ohms nominal, and one for high resistance command circuits - DP72-1K 1000 ohms nominal. NOTE: The Input Potentiometer is not the Feedback Potentiometer, but is an additional Potentiometer provided by and externally located by the end user. Connect the signal leads to positioner terminals A, B and C. See wiring label on inside of positioner cover, and/or in appendix of technical reference manual, and/or wiring diagram on page 5. A Close command is generated when the potentiometer is rotated to its full CCW position, and an Open command when the potentiometer is rotated to its full CW position. If the command signal is derived from other than a rotary pot, it is only necessary to keep in mind that a Closed (full CW) valve is called for when the command potentiometer presents the least resistance between terminals B and C and the most resistance between terminals A and B. A full Open (full CCW) valve would be the reverse condition; the least resistance between terminals A and B and the most resistance between terminals B and C. If the Command potentiometer is reasonably linear, the actuator/valve will be approximately 50% open when the potentiometer shaft is halfway through its travel and the resistance s between terminals C to B and B to A are equal. If applicable, connect one end of the shield wire to the positioner housing ground screw. Note that only one end of the shield wire should be connected to a ground source. 4 Electri-SAFE DataFlo Digital Electronic Positioner WCAIM2025
Do not replace the positioner cover until the unit has been calibrated and the unit is operational. See the paragraph for Calibration and Adjustment. DP72-5V, DP72-XV- Direct Voltage Input Signal for Digital Positioner This Positioner is available for use with the standard direct voltage signals: 0 to 5 VDC or 0 to 10 VDC. The Positioner board is factory calibrated for one of these two signal ranges and field changes are not advised. Comparison of resistance measurements made at terminals B and C against the resistances shown below provides a quick way to determine the voltage range for which a particular board is calibrated. If fuse F1 is blown, an open circuit will be indicated. 0 to 5 volt DC models approximately 800 ohms 0 to 10 volt DC models approximately 1100 ohms Connect the more positive (+) or High signal lead to positioner terminal B. See wiring label on inside of positioner cover, and/or in appendix of technical reference manual, and/or wiring diagram below. Connect the less positive (-) or Common lead to positioner terminal C. Connect one end of the shield wire to the positioner housing ground screw. Note that only one end of the shield wire should be connected to a grounded housing. Do not replace the positioner cover until the unit has been calibrated and the unit is operational. See the paragraph for Calibration and Adjustment below. CALIBRATION AND ADJUSTMENT When properly adjusted, the actuator will stop at the full CCW and full CW positions as a result of having reached one of the respective limits of the input signal span. The full CCW over travel limit Switch will be used only as a backup to stop the actuator pump motor should a failure of an electronic component occur. Adjustment of Over-travel Limit Switch The Positioner has been shipped with a limit switch factory calibrated to stop the actuator in the full CCW position (approx. 92 ). It is located in the actuator housing, behind the flat cover. If it has been determined that the limit switch requires adjustment, perform the adjustment as follows: NOTE: Be very careful when adjusting the switch. It can be damaged by the actuator switch probe if the switch is adjusted (tightened) too far in toward the probe. If in doubt of switch position, loosen (back out) the switch adjustment screw to its loose limit before performing the following steps. If not already done, remove the actuator and positioner housing covers. When power is first applied, the unit will be in the Run Mode. The positioner display should be flashing between POS and a number between 0 and 100. There are three switches (keys) on the positioner circuit board which are labeled SEL(black) for select, DN(white) for down, and UP(white) for up. These are the keys used to calibrate, program, and position the Digital Positioner Board locally. On the positioner board, simultaneously press the SEL and UP keys for three seconds to enter the Manual Mode. The display should alternate between POS and 0.0. WCAIM2025 Electri-SAFE DataFlo Digital Electronic Positioner 5
Press and hold the UP key until the actuator goes full CCW and stops moving. The actuator should be full CCW, and there should be no motor noise. If the motor continues to run, turn the limit switch adjustment screw clockwise until the motor stops running. Turn the adjustment screw clockwise an additional 1 /4 turn to set the switch. Verify the switch setting by: Press the DN key to rotate the actuator shaft about 20 degrees CW. Turn the limit switch adjusting screw counterclockwise 1 /2 turn. Press and hold the UP key until the actuator shaft rotates to full CCW and stops moving. If the actuator is not at full open: Press the DN key to rotate the actuator shaft about 20 degrees CW. Turn the limit switch adjusting screw counterclockwise 1 /2 turn. Press and hold the UP key until the actuator shaft rotates to full CCW and stops moving. Repeat until the actuator is full open and there is no motor noise. The actuator shaft must travel a couple of degrees beyond the 90 degree full CCW position for the Positioner to control the full range of operation. Place a straightedge along the flats on the actuator shaft to verify that the actuator has gone past the 90 degree position when stopped by the limit switch. To return to the RUN mode, press and hold the SEL key for three to five seconds. Calibration Procedures for Positioner See the Technical Reference Manual for more detailed programming information. When power is first applied the unit will be in the Run Mode. The display should be flashing between POS and a number between 0 and 100. Simultaneously press and hold the SEL and DN switches (keys) for three seconds to enter the calibration mode. When first entering the Calibration Mode, CAL will be displayed for two seconds and the security code will be checked. If the required security code is not zero ( 0000 ), the display will begin alternating between code and Enter the security code as described in paragraph and per paragraph of the Technical Reference Manual. If the required security code is zero, it will not need to be entered by the user, i.e., it will be bypassed and the display will automatically flash SEtL, and you can skip to paragraph b). Note: if the security code is forgotten, the special number 4800 can be used to gain entry. However, this number will now be the new security code and if another code number is still desired, it will have to be reprogrammed. a. If and after a security code has been entered, press and release SEL to accept code. The display will now flash SEtL and a value. b. Simultaneously press and release the SEL and UP keys, then adjust input signal to lower input value, e.g., 4 ma. Press and release SEL to lock in value. c. Press and release the DN key, the display will now flash SEtU and a value. Simultaneously press and release SEL and UP, and then adjust input signal to higher input value, e.g., 20 ma. Press and release SEL to lock value. d. Press and release DN, the display will now flash PoC and a number between 0.0 and 5.0. Simultaneously press and release SEL and UP. Rotate the actuator to the full clockwise CW position by pressing and holding the DN key. Release the DN key when full rotation has been achieved. Important: Be careful not to go past the CW 0 degree position. (Position a straightedge along the flats on the positioner shaft to verify the shaft position). The display should read between.200 and.400. If not: rotate the face gear located on the positioner shaft (that drives the potentiometer) until you read between.200 and.400. The gear is held in place by means of a friction fit and a snap ring. No tools are needed nor is it necessary to loosen or remove the snap ring to move the gear. Steady gentle finger pressure will move the gear to allow you to adjust the feedback pot. Press and release SEL to lock in value. e. Press and release the DN key, the display will now flash PoCC and the feedback voltage value. To edit, simultaneously press and release SEL and UP switches then: Use the UP switch to manually rotate the actuator to the CCW 90 position. (Do not go past 90 - Place a ruler on the positioner shaft flat for indication.) If the shaft rotates past 90, use the DOWN switch to bring the shaft back to the 90 position. Press the SEL switch to lock in the 90 feedback reading. Control returns to the Calibration menu. f. Press and release the DN key, the display will now flash Cyt and a cycle time reading. Simultaneously press and release the SEL and UP keys. At this time the actuator will perform one cycle to measure its cycle time displaying PoC as the actuator travels to the full CW position and PoCC for the CCW position. g. To return to the RUN mode, press and hold the SEL key for three to five seconds. OPERATION When power is applied to the positioner, it enters the Run Mode and begins controlling the valve position according to its setpoint input. The valve position is controlled to within the dead band setting of setpoint. See the discussion on dead band in the Technical Reference Manual. Programmable parameters are available to control the behavior of the positioner. Parameters are used to detect alarm conditions, to change the setpoint curve, to set positioning precision and other functions. An RS485 connector located on circuit board is supplied for computer interface to program all parameters. See the Technical Reference Manual for further reference. 6 Electri-SAFE DataFlo Digital Electronic Positioner WCAIM2025
The positioner normally receives the setpoint signal from an external source. However, the positioner can also operate with an operator entered setpoint by using the Manual Setpoint Mode, described in the Technical Reference Manual. As the positioner controls valve position, various alarm conditions can occur. The positioner contains a circuit that will provide an opticallyisolated alarm output that will activate when any alarm occurs. This output can be used simply for operator notification or as a signal to other processes. Parameters can be programmed to take an action when certain alarms occur. The alarm state can be viewed on the positioner display. See the Technical Reference Manual for further reference. An optional current output module can be used to indicate shaft position. A programmable parameter can be set to specify the output current range as either 4 to 20 ma or 0 to 20 ma. See the Technical Reference Manual for further reference. MAINTENANCE GENERAL INFORMATION A properly functioning Electri-SAFE Positioner will always be in the full CW position whenever power is removed from terminals 7 and 8 in the actuator housing. If a problem cannot be solved, the unit should be returned to the factory for service. All electrical troubleshooting should be performed by a licensed electrician or qualified electrical technician. Initially check for loose wiring inside both electrical housings. Check wiring against figures located in the Technical Reference Manual. ELECTRI-SAFE TROUBLESHOOTING For troubleshooting and diagnostics, see the Technical Reference Manual. WCAIM2025 Electri-SAFE DataFlo Digital Electronic Positioner 7
