Chania Prefecture The Prefecture of Chania covers the Western part of Crete; its extent is square kilometres, the coast line 250 kilometres approximately, and it counts circa permanent residents. It is divided in five provinces: Apokoronou, Kissamou, Kydonias, Selinou and Sfakion. Chania is the capital city of the prefecture. Most of the territory is mountainous, with the mountain chain of Lefka Ori ( White mountains, named so because of the snow covering the tops all year round), to be the highest mountain (2.453 metres); at the intervals there are small plains and valleys very fertile, and well watered, due to the various small rivers and brooks flowing through them, which, unlike to the rest of the Greek islands, do have enough water even in summer. The area has a magnificent natural environment; apart from the small rivers and brooks here and there, there are lakes and lagoons, caves and rocks, as well as several gorges both at the North and at the South, the most well known among them being the Samaria gorge, the longer in Europe, declared as a National Park and protected by the Greek State. Visiting the villages of the inland is a fascinating experience, both for the landscape and for their character: most of them are not affected by tourism, they maintain their traditional features in what concerns the architecture and their residents proudly maintain their traditional way of life. It is in those villages that the visitor can understand the special characteristics of the Cretan people, experience the hospitality and taste and smell the scents of the area. The routes from one village to another in most cases are one of the attractions of the place, since the secondary roads pass through sites extremely scenic and beautiful and driving there is an unforgettable experience. Chania prefecture has coasts at the North, at the South and at the West; the northern coasts form three large bays: the Kissamos bay, the Chania bay and the Souda bay, the latter being the best protected from the winds. Souda is one of the bigger natural ports in the Mediterranean Sea. The beaches at the North and West are in their majority sandy and very much affected by the northern winds, as the small islets around cannot prevent them from arriving to the coast at all their strength. The southern coasts are open to the South, with no considerable bays. Partly sandy and some of them pebbly, the beaches have crystal clear blue water and very interesting seabed, for the fans of snorkelling and underwater activities. Swimming starts earlier in the South, where the weather is a bit warmer. In the territory of the prefecture it is found the last part of the European path E4, which passes through the whole of Europe and Greece and ends up at Crete; in the island the path starts from Kissamos (Kastelli) and ends up at Siteia in the Eastern part. The place is wealthy enough. Traditionally, one of the main sources of wealth used to be, and still is, agriculture and cattle breeding. However, the attractions of the place, the magnificent nature, the development of facilities and the hospitality of the locals have made of tourism one of the main economic resources for the prefecture. The area is one of the main destinations both of the Greeks, for vacation, excursions and business, but also of tourists from all over the world. The history of the place goes back to the Neolithic times; it flourished in the Minoan period and was very important during the Venetian domination of the island, mainly due to the excellent port of Souda; it has been the centre of numerous revolts during the Ottoman domination, as the independent character of the 5
people could not stand being under the yoke of any foreigner. During the World War II, it has been one of the most important places of resistance, as the Battle of Crete has taken place in the territory of Chania, due to the interest of the Germans for the airport of Maleme, one of the two main military targets on the island. The City of Chania the city of Chania The city of Chania, situated almost at the middle of the prefecture s territory at the northern coast, is the capital of the prefecture and, as the natives use to say, also the cultural capital city of Crete. The city has approximately permanent residents, and many students, as it is the seat of several faculties of the University of Crete. Chania is an active city, commercial and administrative center of the prefecture. It offers all kind of facilities to the visitor; in the stores you can find any kind of goods, from clothes and jewelry, to souvenirs and house equipment. Many banks, travel agencies, rent - a - car facilities, and a hospital are also available. Along with the new city, the old one is present and active too, as it is there that most of the trendy cafes, bars and restaurants have been established. Accommodation of any kind and for all budgets is plenty, within the city center, at the beach, in the suburbs or in short distance from the city. Food and drink is not a problem. Numerous taverns, restaurants of various tastes, street food, cafes, pastry shops and bars are available. The locals like going out in the evening and spend their time drinking tsikoudia (the national drink of Crete, a kind of ouzo) or wine and talking. Later in the night many bars with foreign and Greek music assure an intensive and fascinating nightlife. A few cinemas and a theatre, art galleries, cultural centers and the University add up to the cultural life of the city. There are lots of things one should see in Chania. First of all, the old city itself is a monument. The samples of all architectural styles are well represented, sometimes mixed in an unexpected blend: Byzantine churches and remains of fortifications, Venetian quarters and public buildings, Ottoman mosques and castles. Crete has been a crossroad throughout its long history and Chania (and the other major cities of Crete) proudly present all this diversity and the traces of all cultures that passed from the area. The Venetians have left to the city important constructions, as the Harbor with the impressive lighthouse at the end of the water break, dating back to the 16th century, the Firkas castle and the dockyards, also of the 15th century. The Venetian heritage is also evident in some of the quarters as Topanas, with the narrow medieval streets and the memories of the Venetian aristocracy who lived here, the Kastelli where the Venetian governor of the city used to have his residence, the Splangia with several churches. The Ottoman domination is also present with the Hamam, built in the 17th century, the mosque of Cucuc Hassan, the actual seat of the Prefecture, which was built by the Ottomans and served as hospital; the Municipal Garden, constructed by Reouf pasha around 1870 following the European style of gardens; today it also hosts a small zoo. There are a lot of interesting churches both Catholic and Orthodox: the most important among them are the Church of San Salvatore, possibly of the 15th century, where it is actually housed the Byzantine and Late 6
Byzantine Collection of the city; the church of St. Frangiskos, the greater Venetian church of the city where it is lodged the archaeological Museum of Chania; the Catholic church dedicated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary; the Orthodox Cathedral Church, a basilica, built in 1860; the churches discarded in the quarters of the old city, mainly in Splangia. It is also worth seeing the Jewish quarter, built in the medieval style with narrow streets and Venetian style houses and the synagogue. Don t miss to visit the quarters of Halepa and Kum Kapi. Halepa is a beautiful historic quarter, where had lived Eleftherios Venizelos and there was the palace of Prince George, the High Commissioner of Crete from 1898 to At the same place there were located the Consulates of the great powers during the 19th and the early 20th century. It is there that in 1876 it had been signed the Convention of Halepa, in which the Ottoman regime granted a semi - autonomous status to Crete. Kum Kapi is out of the eastern walls of the old city. In the past it was a quarter of ill repute, but lately it has been restored and now it is a haunt for young people due to the cute cafes and the nice taverns and restaurants established there. Don t forget to stroll around the Municipal Market, a cross - shaped building where you may find all the local products; also pass from the stivanadika, the stores selling stivania, the traditional boots; maybe you will have the chance to see the shoemaker on work. The city has six Museums: The Archaeological Museum is housed in the Venetian Church of Aghios Frangiscos (St. Francis); artifacts found in excavations of all over the area and covering all periods of ancient history are lodged in the Museum: Neolithic and Minoan pottery, pots and statuettes, clay tablets with Linear A and Linear B scripts, Geometric pottery, Hellenistic sculptures and Roman mosaic pavements. Even if you are not a fan of archaeology, it is worth visiting the Museum, just because its exhibits represent such a long period of time. The Byzantine Collection of Chania is housed in the church of San Salvatore; there are exhibited artifacts of all the periods of the Christian era in Crete: from Proto - Christian mosaics, Byzantine frescoes to coins and architectural sculptures of the period of Venetian domination, as well as pottery and jewelry. The Folk Museum is made up basically by the private collection of Aspasia Bikakis and Irene Koumandarakis. It is housed in the arcade of the Catholic Church. There are exhibited costumes, house equipment and tools along with needlework and embroideries. There is also a reconstruction of a traditional house, as well as representations of various professional activities of the past times, mainly agricultural ones. The Maritime Museum is lodged at the entrance of the Firkas Castle. There are several exhibits about the naval history of the area; navigation instruments, ship models, items pulled up from the sea etc. The Museum of the Historic Archives of Crete is lodged in a neoclassic building at the center of the city. Here there are collected various documents, maps, photographs, souvenirs and trophies of various periods of the medieval and modern history of Crete. One of the halls is reserved to Eleftherios Venizelos; there are exhibited personal souvenirs, documents and other items. The Museum has also a considerable library with more than titles; a good archive of press is also found here. The Chemical Museum of Hania is housed at the building of the Chania Chemical Service. The Museum has an important library orientated to chemistry with many rare books and writings. Also one can see there 7
the reconstruction of the first public chemical laboratory, as it was when it worked in the beginning of the 20th century; the old equipment and instruments give a full idea of how it was like a laboratory of this kind. The War Museum: As Cretan people were in war conditions for long periods of their history, it is not possible not to have a museum reminding these struggles. It is housed in a building of the 19th century (1870) and the exhibits present the war activities of the Cretan people throughout the modern history, both in Crete and elsewhere out of it. There is a very good collection of rare photographs and valuable souvenirs of the wars for the freedom of Crete, but also of the Balkan wars and the World War I and II. Several cultural activities are organized by the Municipality of Hania and by other organizations. In May, when the anniversary of the Battle of Crete, it is organized a Conference for Peace; at the same time an International athletic meeting, known as Venizeleia takes place. On August there are organized various cultural activities with plays, concerts, exhibitions of painting, photography etc., which are presented at the open theatre of the Eastern Moat, at the Firkas castle and elsewhere in the city. There is also a sculpture symposium with international participants. Access to the city (and all the prefecture) is possible by ferryboat from Piraeus; there are two ships from Piraeus to Souda (the port of Chania), all year round. In summer there might be some more. The ships usually sail in the afternoon or in the evening and, depending on their speed, they arrive at Souda after 6 to 10 hours. From Souda if you have not a private means there is a bus to Chania, taxis are also available. Access by ship is also possible from Thessalonica, by bus to Piraeus and then by ferryboat. From the International airport of Athens, Eleftherios Venizelos, there are usually two flights daily to Chania; one early in the morning and the other in the afternoon or evening. Once in the area it is worth visiting the springs of the river Anavalontas, in a magnificent landscape. Sailing round of the Rodopos peninsula Sailing round of the Rodopos peninsula It is worth making a sailing tour of the Rodopos peninsula, at the east of Kastelli; apart from the exciting landscape, you will see some churches, the constructions of old mines and you will find marvelous beaches. 44
Sailing round of the Gramvoussa peninsula Sailing round of the Gramvoussa peninsula More exciting is the sailing tour of the western peninsula, the Gramvousa peninsula. You will see the cave of Tersanas, the Balos lagoon and the islets Agria (Wild) Gramvousa, Imeri (Mild) Gramvousa and Pontikonisi. The two small islets, Agria ( Wild ) Gramvousa and Imeri ( Mild ) Gramvousa are situated close to the homonymous peninsula, at the very west of the island. Agria Gramvousa is situated at the North of the peninsula and, as its name states, its coasts are sheer and rocky and the environment wild and may be not so friendly for the visitor. Imeri Gramvousa (or simply Gramvousa) is an islet with a small port and a beautiful beach. The whole islet is overlooked by the impressive Venetian fort built in the 16th century and changed various dominants until the end of the World War II. Within a small bay opposite to Gramvousa there is the Balos lagoon. The beach at the lagoon is sandy with pinkish white sand and thousands of broken and intact seashells, with shallow water, very warm especially in summer. It is considered as one of the best beaches of the Mediterranean Sea, despite the tar problem, the muddy seabed, which may make walking on it a bit disgusting, and the occasionally bad odour of the water. Kournas Lake the lake of Kournas Once in the area, the lake is worth visiting for the unique flora and fauna and the marvelous landscape. Swimming in the lake is allowed, and small boats can take you for a tour. A few taverns with delicious dishes including fish from the lake are available. Don t miss to visit the homonymous cave at Keratide, by the road leading from the village Kavallos (near the lake) to the village of Kournas. And, if you decide to drive for 3-4 kilometers more towards the village Patima, at the south of the lake, you will be rewarded by the fascinating natural environment and the impressive oak tree wood you will find there. 45
Maleme the village of Maleme It is worth visiting the German military cemetery from World War II, where there have been buried approximately 4500 German soldiers and officers who lost their lives during the Battle of Crete in May of 1941 and during the occupation of the island until Askifou plateau the plateau of Askifou The fans of natural life should visit the Askyfou plateau and the broader area. It is a historic place, well known for the role that played during the various revolts of the Cretan people against the Ottoman domination. It is a very scenic place among the peaks of the Lefka Ori ( White Mountains ), situated 50 kilometers far from Chania at the Southeast, on the road leading to Imbros. There are four small villages at the plateau: Ammoudari, Goni, Kares and Petres with few permanent residents (they count approximately 440 people all together). It is worth visiting the mountain hut at Tavri, 8 kilometers western to Ammoudari, at a height of 1200 m; the route is fascinating and the view breathtaking. Once in the area, don t miss to visit the small plateaus of Tavri and Niatos. It is also worth seeing the fort of Koules, near the village Goni, as well as the small War Museum, with weapons of various periods since 1770 and a small folk collection. Access to the place is possible by car or motorbike (private or rented). Sirikari or Polirheneia Gorge the gorge of Sirikari (Polirinia) The enthusiasts of hiking will find the Sirikari or Polyrheneia gorge, 19 kilometers at the south of Kastelli; the entrance is just off the village Sirikari in an area full of chestnut trees, and its exit is at Polyrheneia. If you wish to cross the gorge you should take the path starting from the church, out of Sirikari; it will take some two hours to go through. The landscape is marvelous from the very entrance; there is a brook at the middle with thick vegetation at the banks and steep cliffs around. The path goes downhill at the right side of the brook; walking within the gorge lasts less than an hour; after that you will pass through an area full of olive trees before you arrive at the village of Polyrheneia. 46
Omalos Plateau the plateau of Omalos A large, beautiful plateau on a height of meters, at the west of the Lefka Ori and 38 kilometers at the Southeast of Chania, the Omalos plateau attracts the visitor in any season of the year. The place has a long history and is closely linked to the struggle of the Cretan people for their freedom. It is here that the fighters took to when pursued by the enemies, it is from here that the rebels started off and it is here that many battles were done; that is why Omalos very often mentioned in the traditional folk songs of Crete. Several villages, caves, and defensive towers since the periods of fighting are found in the place and are worth seeing. But the most important is that here is the entrance of the famous Samaria gorge. Access to the area is possible by public bus, the best means to use, especially if you plan to hike down the Samaria gorge, and by private car or motorbike. Samaria Gorge the gorge of Samaria The most historic and well - known gorge in Crete is the Samaria gorge. It starts from the Omalos plateau, at a height of more than 1200 meters and little by little it slopes down and sinks to the sea at the village of Aghia Roumeli at the Southern coast. Its length is approximately 18 kilometers and it is the longer gorge in Europe. The whole area of the gorge has been declared a National Park both for its natural beauty and for the unique and rare flora and fauna living there. All species are protected by the Greek State and picking flowers, making excess noise, or hunting is strictly forbidden. The most characteristic species of the gorge is the wild goat of Crete, the famous kri - kri; you may see it as you walk, far away on the mountainsides of the White mountains, bounding on the craggy rocks; or, if you are lucky enough and there is not a lot of people around, you may see it near the village of Samaria, which is located within the gorge circa at the middle of the whole distance. The village is uninhabited since the early 60s, when the place was declared a National Park. However, it is well preserved and, as it is at the middle of the whole distance it is an ideal relaxing stop for the hikers, who may find here fresh water and possibly a toilet. The path is well signaled and leads safely to the exit at the coast; you will find water and toilettes along your way, but no food is available; if you like to eat something you have to bring it along. The well - organised hikers will arrive without problems at Aghia Roumeli after 5-10 hours, depending on their pace and the stops made. It is important to wear shoes suitable for walking and comfortable clothes as well as a hut for protection from the sun; it is also important to walk with a normal and firm pace, otherwise you risk getting tired very soon. 47
The last 3 kilometres of the way are the most difficult as there is no shade and the sun is burning; but, arriving at Aghia Roumeli you can be rewarded with a good dive in the cool refreshing sea; in fact this is the best you can do after such a long walk, so than you will not have not stiff legs the next days (especially those less fit may face such problems). Once at Aghia Roumeli, you may catch the boat to Loutro and Sfakia, or Sougia and Palaeochora. Or you may choose to stay overnight at Aghia Roumeli for a quiet and relaxing evening; if you find it very crowded, just think that when the last boat with the tired hikers has left the small port, it regains its calmness and beauty. Aghia Roumeli offers some accommodation and food and drink facilities. Access to the gorge is allowed from April or May to the end of October, as from late autumn to early spring the stream in the gorge is rather rapid and dangerous; there is also a risk of landslides. If you feel that you are not fit enough to do all the way in the gorge, you can take the reverse way, starting from the exit, at Aghia Roumeli and arriving up to the narrowest point of the gorge, at Sideroportes; arriving there, you have to do the same way back to Aghia Roumeli; you will walk only a few kilometers, not very tiring, but you will loose the scenic environment, the wild beauty and the magic of the gorge. Lefka Ori ( White Mountains ) the White Mountains Lefka Ori Lefka Ori ( White Mountains ) is a mountain chain not very extended as other ones in Greece, but it is very high; its highest top reaches the 2453 meters (2-3 meters lower than Idi or Psiloritis), whereas several other tops are more than 2000 meters high. It is a quite difficult mountain to climb; only expert climbers can climb in winter when there is fog and snow; things are not better in summer when the high temperature makes the venture much more difficult. Many climbing paths starting from various directions, as from the Omalos plateau or from the Askyfou plateau etc., lead to various peaks of the mountain chain. The Cave of Agia Sofia the cave of Agia Sofia The cave of Aghia Sophia is situated at less than 2 kilometres after the village Topolia, on the road leading from Kastelli to Elafonissos. A short path gets the visitor to the cave and the tiny church of Aghia Sofia within it. It is found at a height of 285 metres; the main hall is of a diameter of 70 metres and of a height of 20 metres. Huge stalactites, more than 5 metres high, and even huger stalagmites decorate the cave. A few fig trees have grown in the cave and the moss on the rocks paint its walls in deep green. Archaeological surveys in the cave have shown that man has used it since as early as the Neolithic period. Throughout history the cave has been used for various purposes and there are many local legends about it. 48
The most common of them is the popular belief that there is the hoof print of St. George s horse in the cave; as the locals say it is well visible somewhere on a rock. The cave has been only partly explored, but it is possible that it is very extended in length. Archaeological Sites Aptera the archaeological site of Aptera The archaeological site of Aptera is situated 15 kilometers far from Chania at the Southeast, close to the village Megala Chorafia with a good view all around the area. It had been an active city-state since the Geometric period (8th century b.c.). Due to its location it controlled exchanges and commercial activities; as a result it was one of the most important Doric city-states of Crete. The ruins are dated in all periods up to the Roman era and later; the most important of them are the walls of the Doric city, cyclopean like, the cisterns of the Roman period, the two-part sanctuary of the 5th-4th century, the tombs of Geometric times, etc, as well as buildings of the Byzantine period. Polirinia the archaeological site of Polirhinia The archaeological site is located 48 kilometers far from Chania at the Southwest. Polyrheneia was one of the most ancient cities of Crete, since it had been founded by the Myceneans, when they succeeded the Minoans by the mid -2nd millennium b.c. The city flourished during the Roman period as it had been awarded various privileges as a reward for not having resisted to the Romans. What is visible today are the city walls, a few graves and traces of an aqueduct of the Roman period. If you wish to visit the site you arrive at the homonymous village and then you walk following the path. Falasarna the archaeological site of Falasarna The archaeological site of Falassarna is situated 58 kilometers far from Chania and 17 kilometers far from Kastelli at the West, just where it is found the actual tourist resort. 49
Falassarna was an independent Doric city - state, that flourished mainly during the Classic and Hellenistic periods. It served as the port of the inland Polyrheneia. The city was destroyed by the Romans; ruins of various periods are visible, as traces of cyclopean walls, a stone carved throne, which has been found at the nearby village of Koutri, and the ruins of a temple, possibly dedicated to Apollo or Artemis (Diana). Lissos the archaeological site of Lissos Lissos is situated over 70 kilometers far from Chania at the Southern coast of Crete. The site was the religious center of the city - states of Southwestern Crete; it flourished mainly during the Hellenistic and the Roman times. What is visible today are the ruins of a temple dedicated to Aesculapius, the remains of an ancient Roman theatre and some tombs cut in the rock. Ancient Tara (Agia Roumeli) Agia Roumeli Ancient Tara Situated at the Southern Coast of Crete, close to the village of Aghia Roumeli, there are the ruins of the Doric city Tara. The city flourished mostly during the Roman period. There have been found the ruins of a temple, possibly dedicated to Apollo or Artemis (Diana). Ancient Anopolis the archaeological site of Ancient Anopolis The archaeological site of ancient Anopolis is situated 87 kilometers far from Chania at the South, close to the homonymous village. Anopolis was an independent city during the Classical period, but it flourished mainly during the Roman and the Byzantine periods. It seems that the nearby beach of Phoenix, some 2-3 kilometers at the South, served as its port. The city walls, dating back to the prehistoric period, are impressive and still stand on the hill of Aghia Aikaterini. 50
Ancient Diktinna (Kolymbari) Kolumbari archaeological site Ancient Diktinna Situated some 45 kilometers far from Chania, at the Northwest, 23 kilometers far from Kolymbari it is found ancient Diktynna, a sacred place in honor of Artemis Vritomartis, flourishing during the Roman period. Late Minoan grave (Kournas) Kournas archaeological site Late Minoan grave Situated some 48 kilometers far from Chania, at the Southeast, 3 kilometers far from the village of Kournas, close to the village of Filaki it is found a vaulted grave dating back to the Late Minoan period, when the Myceneans of the Mainland Greece had already been established in Crete. Late Minoan grave (Maleme) Maleme archaeological site Late Minoan grave Some 18 kilometers far from Chania, at the West and 2-3 kilometers far from Maleme, there is a Minoan vaulted tomb with a very long entrance passage and a pyramidoid roof. In the interior there have been found late Minoan pot shreds and seal stones. Firkas Castle (Chania) Chania archaeological site Firkas Castle The castle of Firkas was built in the 16th century by the Venetian dominants of the island, in order to protect both the town and the port of Chania. It is a historic place for Crete in general and Chania in particular. It is on this castle that in 1897 were raised the flags of the Great Powers (Britain, France, Russia and Italy), a fact that signaled the autonomy of Crete and the deliberation from the Ottoman dominance. 51
It is at the Firkas Castle that on the 1st of December 1913, El.Venizelos declared the incorporation of Crete to the territory of Greece. Today the castle hosts the Maritime museum and a small theatre. Frangokastello Fort the fort of Fragokastelo Situated 80 kilometers far from Chania at the Southern coast of Crete, this castle had been built by the Venetians, in order to supervise and guard the whole area and protect the population from the incursions of the pirates. As the castle was in use for a short time, both by the Venetians and the Ottomans who succeeded them, it had soon been abandoned. During the Greek Revolution of 1821, the Cretan people took the fort, which was almost destroyed later in 1828, after a siege. Itzedin Fort (Souda) the fort of Itzedin The fort of Itzedin is situated some 14 kilometers far from Chania, at the East close to the village Kalami. It has been built by the Ottomans after the revolution of the Cretan people in 1866 at the place of the older fortifications of the 17th century. During the mid- 20th century it has been used as a prison. Souda Castle the castle of Souda Situated at the islet of Souda, opposite to the castle of Idzedin. The Venetians started to construct it in 1570 and as it was expanded, it comprised the whole of the islet. Before the construction of the Itzedin castle it was the only fort at the place, however it provided a pretty effective protection of the Souda port and of the town of Chania. It was given to the Ottomans in It is at this castle that on the 14th of February 1913 that the Ottoman flag was lowered to give its place to the Greek one and thus signal the official incorporation of Crete to the Greek territory. 52
Monasteries Monastery of Agia Triada Tsagarolon (Akrotiri) the monastery of Agia Triada Situated some 16 kilometers far from Chania, at the Northeast at Akrotiri Peninsula, the Monastery of Aghia Triada (the Holy Trinity) is the bigger monastery complex in Crete. The Monastery has been established in early 17th century by the brothers - both monks - Laurentios and Ieremias Tsangaroli, Orthodox of Venetian origin, after whom it has taken its name. The earlier buildings are representative of the Cretan architecture of the period. The Monastery used to have a lot of precious items, which were destroyed or pillaged by the Ottomans during the Greek Revolution of As it occurred with most of the Monasteries in Crete, the Monastery of Aghia Triada played an important role to the Cretan revolts of 1866 and 1878, mainly thanks to its very active abbot Grigorios Papadopetrakis. The Monastery had been renovated in 1854, when there had been added the chapels of the Saint Crucifixion and of the Saint Apostles, whereas from 1892 it had been established an Orthodox Seminary. Monastery of Kyria ton Angelo tou Gouvernetou (Akrotiri) the monastery of Kyria ton Angelon Situated some 20 kilometers far from Chania, at the Northeast at Akrotiri Peninsula. The main church is dedicated to the Presentation of Virgin Mary. The initial complex with the fort-like appearance dates back to the mid-16th century. The monastery was destroyed by the Ottomans during the Greek Revolution of 1821 and it took its actual form during the 19th century, when it was renovated in neo-classic style. Monastery of Gonia (Kolymbari) and the Orthodox Academy the monastery of Gonia Situated some 26 kilometers far from Chania, at the West and two and half kilometers from Kolymbari is found the Monastery of Panaghia Odigitria, dedicated to Virgin Mary, known as Moni Gonias due to its place at the very western end of the bay. 53
It is an ancient monastery, dating back to the 9th century. Initially it was dedicated to Aghios Georghios (St. George) and was located at Menies, at the Rodopos peninsula, built on the ruins of the ancient temple of Artemis Vritomartis (Diktynna). At its actual place it stands since the early 17th century, as safety reasons forced the monks to move there. It is since then that it has been dedicated to Panaghia Odigitria. The monastery has always been a spot of resistance to the various conquerors of Crete; for this reason it has been destroyed several times by the Ottomans; the last time it was during the revolution of During the World War II it was partly destroyed by the Germans as, once again, it was one of the centers of resistance against the German domination of the island. Close to the Monastery it is found the Orthodox Academy of Crete a very important religious and spiritual foundation established by the Archdiocese of Crete. Monastery of Chrissoskalitissa the monastery of Chrissoskalitissa Situated 76 kilometers far from Chania, at the Southwest, at the Western coast of Crete, there is the important Monastery of Panaghia Chrysoskalitissa (meaning with golden steps ); it is uncertain when it has been built. The old tradition of the Monastery pretends that one out of the 90 steps dug in the rock and leading to the top is made of gold (hence its name); however, only the sinless are able to distinguish it. The nearby small bay of Stomio with a rocky coast is worth seeing for its natural beauty and the view it offers to the visitor. E4 Path The E4 or 4th European Path is a walking and climbing path, starting from the Atlantic coasts of Europe, in Portugal, and after having passed through almost the whole of Continental Europe, Spain, France, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, and Bulgaria, it ends up to Crete after having crossed the whole of Greece from North to South. The part of Crete starts from Kissamos (Kastelli) at the cape Cavonissi, it continues down to Elafonissos, goes through the whole of Crete, divided twice in two branches and then reuniting again; after having reached Kato Zakros in Lasithi, it turns again to the North and ends up at Siteia at the eastern edge of Lasithi. The path is signaled well enough with signals of black and yellow colors. As walking is the best way to really know a place, E4 gives to the visitor the chance of discovering places and people off the usual tourist destinations and thus more authentic; moreover, it offers the possibility to come across landscapes which you could never reach otherwise. Why Chania Because of the wild nature of the Samaria Gorge, the longer European gorge. Not only will you hike within a landscape of luxurious green and fresh water at your feet, but also, if you are lucky enough, you may come across the wild animals living there, and most of all the famous kri - kri. Because the old town gets you back to past times when you stroll around; in the evening, it becomes the heart of amusement and in the small beautiful bars you can find any kind of music and drink. 54
Because of the Cretan hospitality which is legendary. But, watch out! Cretan people accept well the foreigner and like to offer. Don t ever refuse their offer; you will offend them. Because of the unique herbs, cheeses, wines and dishes like gamopilafo and the Cretan (Mediterranean) diet. Because you may find numerous marvelous, scenic beaches, with crystal clear water and choose the one it better fits to your mood and desires. Because of the too many scenic routes, which may make your visit unforgettable. Because of the wild Cretan goat, the famous Kri - Kri ; it is so characteristic and original, that one of the species had been offered as a gift to the president of the United States J.F. Kennedy, during the visit of the Prime Minister of Greece to Washington in Because of the innumerous local feasts ( panighyri ) which take place all year round in even the smallest Cretan villages where the old style of life is still alive. Because the old port is the best place in the world to enjoy the sunset drinking your ouzo or tsikoudia with excellent and genius mezedes. Because of the full facilities of lodging, eating and amusement which is offered to the visitors who choose to stay in this part of Crete during their vacations. Shopping - Local products Apart from the extremely beautiful nature and the numerous marvelous beaches, Crete has also a lot of high quality local products. In the Municipal Market of Chania, which is also a place worth seeing, as it is lodged at a very interesting restored building of the early 20th century, you can find the famous Cretan cheeses as anthotyros (soft white cheese) and graviera (gruyere), the world famous olive oil, olives of various types all of them gorgeous, stafides (dried grapes), the strong and tasty dry red wine, the famous tsikoudia or raki, the local variety of ouzo, the unique Cretan herbs as diktamos and malotira (a kind of mountain tea). Crete is also famous for its knives; you may find them at any store selling souvenirs and small gifts; usually on the blade there is carved a mantinada, a poem of two or three verses, which the Cretans improvise in any occasion. You may also buy stivania, the famous boots of the men s traditional costume made of goat leather. You may find them a bit expensive, but they are really of high quality! Ask for them at the stivanadika in Skydlof Street, near the Municipal Market; although originally for men, today women can also find their size. In the taverns of the island ask for dakos (barley rusks softened in water, with feta cheese, olive oil and tomato), chochlious boubouristous (snails cooked with olive oil vinegar and salt), aega ofti (roasted goat), kaltsounia (cheese pies stuffed with the local cheese anthotyros and flavored with mint) and dozens of other local tastes and mezedes. Don t forget to ask for pilafi, rice boiled in meat broth. Originally, this dish is offered at the wedding tables (hence its original name gamopilafo, meaning the wedding rice ), and the most delicious of them you can still find on this occasion. However, as the dish has become pretty famous, you may find it at the menus of many restaurants as well. 55
