2 consulting engineers We add action to our words What is the ideal size of a company within engineering consultancy? EKJ was founded in 1961 and has grown to employ more than 200 people today. We still have a growth strategy that ensures our competitive edge and optimises our ability to attract people with the right competencies. But for us, growing just to get bigger has never been a goal in itself. And even though we continue to add people, we insist on being open and flexible and on maintaining short chains of command. We are never going to compromise our flat organisational structure and trademark ability to react instantly. We like to add action to our words, to avoid unnecessary administration and to turn ideas intro reality. It is our goal to do everything better today than we did yesterday. Lisbeth Røgind, Planning and Project Manager, CBS. all the things nobody thinks of It takes a lot of skill and plenty of experience to provide professional consultancy services to building owners. Profound knowledge of design, building management and legislation is a minimum as is a practical insight into the complex systems, processes and procedures involved with professional building. This is what we call the technical dimension of our consulting. An equally important part, however, is the ability to relate to the building owner s vision. To see beyond words, sketches and budgets and form an idea of the finished project and its eventual context. Listening to the building owner and identifying his or her dreams and demands is one of our most important tasks. Our experience tells us that an active dialogue is the best foundation for asking the right questions and identifying potential problems. Together we find the optimal solution. Trust-based consulting As an independent adviser and technical assessor we take care of the building owner s interests from idea to finished project. We always have an opinion, and we have not earned our reputation by keeping it to ourselves. We provide our customers with professional and valueadding advice. As a consequence, we find it absolutely vital that our customers know that our solutions are customised, integrated with all the relevant plans and thought through from conception to execution. We capitalise on our close cooperation with the rest of the EKJ departments and are proud that many of our customers keep coming back. Why? Because it is the best proof that building consultancy services based on trust is the right way to go. Responsiveness and reliability an advantage for CBS During the last 15 years, EKJ has been the building owner consultant for Copenhagen Business School and provided engineering consultancy on a range of building and installation projects. Planning and Project Manager, Lisbeth Røgind, describes the cooperation with EKJ: Our building owner organisation at CBS is quite small, therefore we draw on a range of external suppliers. We wish to have an open dialogue with our consultants, and I find it very important that they are able to understand our needs and listen to our wishes. EKJ is especially good at reading us as a client. That is not a matter of course. Another advantage we experience working with EKJ is that they help secure the continuity with regard to our building stock. We have the same contact person from project to project. It is great that we don t have to start from scratch every time. In cases where my contact person is not capable of solving the task himself, EKJ always sends their best man for the job. In that way EKJ manages to make the most of the size of the company, says Lisbeth Røgind.

Our building managers liaise with contractors and are responsible for time, economy, quality and safety coordination.

It falls in line with our way of thinking. As a company we make it a point of honour only to recommend products and solutions we can vouch for. We choose to opt out solutions that will lead to excessive expenditure or include materials that do not belong in a modern building project. 8 infrastructure we just try to obey the laws of gravity EKJ Infrastructure has a wide range of unique competencies at our disposal. They provide us with the skills needed for the rational planning and design of railways, stations, metro, roads, bridges, tunnels, cities, urban spaces, harbours and airports with due consideration to functionality, cost, sustainability and the environment. We seek out the project s opportunities and challenges in close cooperation with our clients and contribute with the knowledge and experience needed to find the optimal solution. Put bluntly, we just try to obey the laws of gravity. But make no mistake: in all our jobs we challenge and optimise the known solutions or develop all new ones when needed. Thinking across disciplines EKJ is driven by a spirit that allows us to solve problems across departments and professional competencies. Each employee is empowered to draw from the experience and knowledge of all our employees; allowing clients to gain from our combined strength, even where our employees are not assigned to their particular project. A lot of projects today include a significant environmental component which has made it important for us to set up an even closer cooperation with our environmental department to ensure that all relevant environmental issues are integrated into the project from day one. 9 The Italian and Danish way of thinking can be very different, but combining the two cultures has proven very successful. EKJ contributes with a young approach: they are not tied to old schemes. That is also why we are looking forward to working together on more projects in the future. EKJ may be a bit expensive, but then again, good things are seldom cheap. International partnerships In large-scale consultancy jobs, we bring in international partners and hand-picked external resources to supplement our own pool of competencies. That way we are able to offer some unique competencies within highly specialised disciplines and guarantee to our clients we are the strongest team. Broconsult In 2010 the company Broconsult became part of EKJ. Broconsult has since 1980 provided consultancy services for building owners in the public sector in connection with planning, design and maintenance of bridges and tunnels. Today, Broconsult s experience and expertise are integrated parts of EKJ Infrastructure and a strong asset in connection with big construction projects. EKJ Infrastructure In the Infrastructure department we handle project management, planning, design, tenders, building inspection, check-up and maintenance of facilities for small and large property owners in both the public and private sectors. Furthermore, we guide and service facility owners and entrepreneurs with administration tasks, including operation and maintenance of facilities. Among other things, EKJ Infrastructure designs and manages: railways bridges tunnels harbours roads Metro Cityringen Metro Cityringen is Copenhagen s new metroline with 17 new stations. The metro is to be completed in 2018 and will have approx. 130 million passengers per year. Together with an international partner, EKJ will be acting as consulting engineers for the Italian construction consortium, CMT, designing all tunnel elements and stations. Copenhagen-Ringsted The new railway between the Zealand cities of Copenhagen and Ringsted is the first major Danish railway project in many years and the largest project in the history of Banedanmark. EKJ is part of the international consortium who has been awarded the project.

10 environment Some consultants may have a tendency to consider any new project business as usual. We never experience that with EKJ. They pay attention to what we write and provide us with the advice and solutions that we are asking for. Hanne Jørgensen, MSc. Københavns Kommune Center for Miljø our calculations should hold water for the next hundred years or so The climate is changing. This means that the tasks in EKJ s environment department change. Many climate scientists agree that we will experience more incidents of extreme precipitation and that we therefore need to prepare for this when building for the future. As engineers and consultants, it is our job to pay more and more attention to the possible consequences of the dramatic climate changes that nobody really knows the extent of. The environment plays a vital part in all projects The consequences of the climate changes reach far wider than the activities of our environment department. New demands for piling, for climate screens and for drainage are constantly evolving. Because of this, the environment department has become an integral part of planning, projecting and implementing. This includes solutions like green roofs that generate smaller quantities of rain for the outlet systems and suggestions for how to recycle rainwater in the establishment of recreational lake areas. Another activity is consultancy in connection with low-energy solutions based on solar power or ground heat. All in all it is only natural for us to cooperate closely with the other departments and place our skills at the disposal of the entire EKJ business. Focus on visionary green solutions The environment department s core services include protection of ground water resources and EIA projects in connection with sizeable construction projects. Add to this a general focus on ecological sustainability. Today, the concept of the environment is being very broadly interpreted and encompasses everything from resource consumption to health issues. We carry out a lot of lifecycle calculations and provide green accounts that investigate the carbon footprint of both products and processes. Together with the rest of EKJ, we focus on reducing the energy consumption in all the projects we are involved in by developing unique and visionary green solutions. EKJ Environment The environment department works with: - protection of ground water resources - polluted earth and ground water - EIA projects - environmentally friendly projecting - lifecycle analyses and environmental information labels The environment department is part of a close cooperation with the other EKJ departments. All tasks are being solved in interdisciplinary teams of geologists, geographers, biologists, engineers and environmental engineers.
