1 Alerts & Filters in Power E*TRADE Pro Strategy Scanner Power E*TRADE Pro Strategy Scanner provides real-time technical screening and backtesting based on predefined and custom strategies. With custom strategies, you can not only select and customize alerts, but you can also set filters to further define the types of stocks and situations that will qualify. This degree of customization can make your strategies even more focused and precise, and give you a significant edge in the markets. This document provides descriptions for all Strategy Scanner alerts and filters. Click either of the following links to navigate directly to a particular section: Alerts Technical alerts and chart patterns (e.g. new highs/lows, moving average crossovers, and double bottoms) Filters Conditions that must be met for an alert to be generated (e.g. minimum/maximum price, volume, and gap size) To set alerts and filters for your strategies, simply select Strategy Setup from the My Strategies menu in the Strategy Scanner window. This will bring up the Strategy Alerts tab of the Strategy Setup dialog box, where you can select and customize the alerts in your strategy. Click the Strategy Filters tab to customize filters. 2 New High New Low New highs or lows for the number of days specified in the Quality field. Also shows the number of days since the price was higher or lower. Number of days used to determine new highs or lows. The default is 0, which will return all new highs and lows for the day s current session; a value of 365 will return results based on prices over the past year. New High Ask New Low Bid New high asks or low bids (based on prices during the current session) for a minimum number of shares. Not active in the 30 seconds before or 60 seconds after market open. Minimum number of shares attached to new high asks or low bids for the day s current trading session. New High (Filtered) New Low (Filtered) Filtered new highs or lows for the number of days specified in the Quality field. Also shows the number of days since the price was higher or lower. Unlike unfiltered new highs (above), when the price of a stock changes many times in quick succession, only one of these alerts will be generated (typically no more than one per minute). Exception: If the price increases more than the stock s volatility would suggest, a new alert will be shown. Number of days used to determine new highs or lows. 4 Pre-Market Highs Pre-Market Lows New pre-market highs or lows for the number of days specified in the Quality field. Also shows number of days since the price was higher or lower. Screens pre-market prints only, but uses prices from regular market sessions to determine what qualifies as a new high or low. Number of days used to determine new highs or lows. The default is 0, which will return all new highs and lows based on the day s current pre-market session; a value of 365 will return results based on prices over the past year. Post-Market Highs Post-Market Lows New post-market highs or lows for the number of days specified in the Quality field. Also shows the number of days the price was higher or lower. Screens post-market prints only, but uses prices from regular market sessions to determine what qualifies as a new high or low. Number of days used to determine new highs or lows. The amount of the pullback from the low must be at least $0.01 to generate an alert. The last part of the pattern must occur at least three minutes after open. % Up For The Day Stock price moves up or down from the previous close by the percentage specified in the Quality field. Percentage change from the previous close used to generate the alert. 8 Standard Deviation Breakout Standard Deviation Breakdown Stock price moves up or down from the previous close by the standard deviation specified in the Quality field. Note: Standard deviation for these alerts is based on a year's worth of volatility data with recent data weighted more heavily, and the formula scaled so that "1" represents a standard deviation for one day. Change in standard deviation from the previous close used to generate the alert. The default is 1. Always rounds up to the next integer. Crossed Daily Highs Resistance Crossed Daily Lows Support Stock s price crosses above or below any previous day s high or low (for the first time since the end of that previous day). A subset of the high/low alerts, these are used to report an established new high/low e.g. a new high from a 5-day high. Number of days used to determine crossings. The default is 0, which will return all crossings based on the previous day s high or low; a value of 365 will return results based on the 52-week high or low. 9 Large Bid Size Generated when a stock has an unusually high number of shares on the best bid/ask. Alert can show: Size Increasing Number of shares is increasing for the large lot bid/ask Price Increasing Price is increasing for the large lot bid/ask Price dropping Price is dropping for the large lot bid/ask Number of shares in the bid/ask required to generate the alert. A value of 10,000 shares is the minimum, unless the stock typically trades under 1,000,000 shares per day, in which case the minimum value is 6,000. Large Ask Size Note: These alerts are generated only for stocks with an average daily volume of less than 3,000,000 shares. 10 Market Crossed Bid price of a stock is higher than the ask price. These alerts are automatically filtered so that if the market is crossed several times in quick succession only one alert will be shown. Not intended for arbitrage most crossed markets resolve in 1 2 seconds. Market Crossed Up Market Crossed Down The Crossed Market alert types are: Market Crossed All crossings are reported Market Crossed Up An ECN is reporting a higher bid than ask on the stock s primary market Market Crossed Down An ECN is reporting a lower ask than bid on the stock s primary market The spread required to generate the alert (default ) Market Locked Bid and ask prices of a stock are the same. If the market is locked several times in quick succession, you ll only be notified the first time. No Quality field available Large Spread Alert will be generated if the specialist's spread for a NYSE stock suddenly gets large $0.50 or more. If the spread changes multiple times in a short period, you ll only be notified the first time. 11 Trading Above Occurs when someone buys a stock for more than the best ask price or sells for less than the best bid. If multiple alerts are generated close together, only one will The number of times trade activity occurs in a short period before an alert will be generated Trading Below show (though the number of occurrences will be noted in the alert description). Trading Above Specialist Trading Below Specialist Occurs when someone buys a stock for more than the best ask price on the NYSE or Amex specialist s book or sells for less than the best bid. If multiple alerts are generated close together, only one will show (though the number of occurrences will be noted in the alert description). The number of times trade activity occurs in a short period before an alert will be generated Offer Stepping Down The stock has a large number of shares on the offer. (The minimum size on the offer is different for different stocks.) The best offer price is exactly one penny above the last sale price. The sale price drops, and the large offer follows it. The prices must drop at least one more time in this way before the first alert is generated. Another alert is generated each successive time the price steps down in this way with filtering added to remove noise. 12 NYSE Buy Imbalance NYSE Sell Imbalance Occurs only near the end of the trading day; these are based on the specialist's market on close orders. If there are more shares desired on the buy side for a stock than the sell side it is a "buy imbalance." If more orders are on the sell side then the buy, then we call it a "sell imbalance." Size of the imbalance as a percentage of the total number of shares traded that day for the stock Crossed Above Open Crossed Below Open Generated any time a stock crosses above or below the day s open. During the pre-market session, the previous day s open will be used as the crossover point. Number of seconds since the last time a stock triggered the alert (or from the open, for the first alert of the day). The default is 0, which will show every crossover; a value of 60 will return results only if the price remains above or below the open for 60 seconds before crossing again. Crossed Above Close Crossed Below Close Generated any time a stock crosses above or below the previous close. During the post-market session, the close of the current day s regular market will be used as the crossover point. Number of seconds since the last time a stock triggered the alert (or from the current day s close, for the first alert of the postmarket). The default is 0, which will show every crossover; a value of 60 will return results only if the price remains above or below the close for 60 seconds before crossing again. 13 Crossed Above Open (Confirmed) No Quality field available Crossed Below Open (Confirmed) Crossed Above Close (Confirmed) Generated any time a stock crosses above or below the open or the previous close. For opening crossovers, during the pre-market session, the previous day s open will be used. For closing crossovers, during the postmarket, the close of the current day s regular session will be used. To increase the likelihood that each alert is significant, statistical information based on time volume and price is used to confirm the move. 14 Sector Breakout (From Open) Reports a breakout or breakdown if a stock is performing better or worse relative to its opening price than the rest of the sector. Not available for indexes, or during the pre-market. Percentage difference from the expectation for the stock based on sector performance (minimum value 1%) Sector Breakdown (From Open) Sector Breakout (From Close) Note: Alerts are based on an algorithm that seeks to identify an index best suited as an indicator for the stock, based on a comparison of intraday moves and other statistical information. The index is often specific to the stock s sector, but may represent the broader market. For some stocks, no index is appropriate, and no results are returned. 15 Positive Market Divergence Negative Market Divergence Reports a breakout or breakdown if a stock is performing better or worse relative to its price from the previous close than the overall market, as represented by the tracking stock for the Nasdaq-100 (QQQQ). Percentage difference from the expectation for the stock based on market performance (minimum value 1%) Consolidation Generated when a stock s price range is narrowing, as determined by divergence from a pre-calculated volatility; evaluated on average every 15 minutes. Quality of the consolidation. Range is 2 10, with 10 being the strongest. A consolidation value of 2 (the default) is considered strong. High Relative Volume Volume for the stock is higher than normal for the time of day, relative to the average volume at that time over several recent days. Data is reviewed every 15 minutes. Ratio of the current volume over the historical volume at which an alert will be generated. A value of 1.5 is the default and minimum. 1 minute volume spike Similar to the High Relative Volume Alert, this alert triggers when volume is higher than normal for a time of day for a given stock compared to a historical baseline. However, the data is reviewed every minute so it may show an excess amount of alerts for thinly traded stocks Ratio of the current volume over the historical volume at which an alert will be generated. 16 Strong Volume Volume for the stock is higher than normal for the day, relative to the average total daily volume over several recent days. By default, alerts are first generated when the average daily volume is reached, and then at each multiple thereafter. Multiple of average volume at which an alert will first be generated. For example, a value of 1 (the default) will first generate an alert when average daily volume is reached; a value of 2 will first generate an alert at two times normal volume, and so on. Unusual Number of Prints Alert is triggered when a stock generates unusually high bid, ask, and/or trade activity for the time of day. Activity must be at least five times higher than normal. Alerts are generated at increments of five (five times normal activity, 10 times, etc.). Multiple of average activity in bids, asks, and/or trades at which an alert will be generated (minimum 5). Running up now Running down now Generated when a stock s price moves up or down quicker than expected relative to the volatility of a stock over a one-minute period. The amount of the move in $, please note if a stock has a normal volatility of 10 cents, a quality field of 10 cents or less will not generate an alert for that stock. Running Up Running Down Generated when a stock s price moves up or down very quickly relative to volatility over an approximately oneminute period. Range is generally from 1 10 (but can be higher). A value of 5 returns alerts for stocks that are moving briskly. The higher the value, the fewer alerts will be generated. Very few stocks will have values higher than 10.

17 Running Up (Intermediate) Running Down (Intermediate) Generated when a stock s price moves up or down very quickly relative to volatility. Filtered to report only clear, statistically valid moves. Requires more consistent moves than basic Running alerts, but less consistent than confirmed Running alerts. Ratio of the stock s move to the average move for the stock (as determined by intraday volatility over the past two weeks). Minimum value is 2. Running Up (Confirmed) Running Down (Confirmed) Generated when a stock s price moves up or down quickly relative to volatility over an approximately 15- minute period. To generate an alert, more volume is required than for unconfirmed Running indicators. Filtered to report only clear, statistically valid moves. The speed of the move. Range is generally from 1 10 (but can be higher). A value of 1 shows all confirmed moves, and 5 returns moves that are considered brisk. The higher the value, the fewer alerts will be generated. Very few stocks will have values higher than 10. Crossed Above 200-Day Moving Average Crossed Below 200-Day Moving Average Generated when a stock s price crosses above or below its simple moving average for the period. 19 Positive VWAP Divergence Negative VWAP Divergence Generated when the last bid, ask, or trade for a stock is a specified amount away from the current Volume Weight Average Price. The integer percentage difference from the VWAP Gap Down Reversal Gap Up Reversal Generated when a stock s price opens with a gap from the previous close and then reverses to cross above or below the close. Also reports gap continuation (the amount the stock s price moved in the direction of the gap after the open before reversing) The minimum distance in price, from the extreme point after the gap, back to the previous close False Gap Up Retracement False Gap Down Retracement Generated when a stock s price opens with a gap from the previous close, starts to fill the gap, and then continues down in the direction of the original gap. The gap must be significant and the price can only partially fill the gap i.e. if the price crosses the previous close, the retracement will not be considered false. To generate an alert, more volume is required than for unconfirmed Channel Breakout indicators. Filtered to report only clear, statistically valid moves. Similar to a confirmed Running Up / Down indicator after Consolidation. The speed of the breakout. Range is generally from 1 10 (but can be higher). A value of 1 shows all confirmed breakouts, and 5 returns breakouts that are considered brisk. The higher the value, the fewer alerts will be generated. Very few stocks will have values higher than 10. Channel Breakout Shows when a stock s price moves up or down quickly after a consolidation. Filtered to report only clear, Channel Breakdown statistically valid moves. Reports more quickly than confirmed versions. Similar to an unconfirmed Running Up / Down indicator after Consolidation. The quality of the consolidation. Range is 2 10, with 10 being the strongest quality. 5-Minute Consolidation Breakout 5-Minute Consolidation Breakdown Generated if a bid, ask, or trade is reported outside a stock s consolidation range. The consolidation pattern must last at least as long as the duration in the alert name. Formula pays very little attention to volume. 22 Crossed Above Resistance (Confirmed) Crossed Below Support (Confirmed) Generated when a stock moves above its resistance or below its support. Sufficient volume is required. The minimum number of hours the support or resistance pattern must be in effect for the crossing to be recognized. This quality is a measure of both time and volume i.e. two-times normal volume during one hour is considered two hours of trading. Crossed Above Resistance Crossed Below Support Generated when a stock moves above its resistance or below its support. Because this alert does not require volume confirmation, it tends to report more quickly than its confirmed equivalent. The minimum number of hours the support or resistance pattern must be in effect for the crossing to be recognized. This quality is a measure of both time and volume i.e. two-times normal volume during one hour is considered two hours of trading. Block Trade Reports trades of over 20,000 shares, often with a description of the price at the bid/ask, above the ask, below the bid, or between the ask and the bid. 23 Broadening Bottom Broadening Top A broadening pattern is defined by a series of at least five consecutive points of higher highs and lower lows. An alert is generated when: For a broadening bottom The stock s price touches the bottom of the pattern, then turns back up on sufficient volume For a broadening top The stock s price touches the top of the pattern, then turns back down on sufficient volume The minimum number of hours the broadening pattern must be in effect for the bottom or top to be recognized. This quality is a measure of both time and volume i.e. two-times normal volume during one hour is considered two hours of trading. Triangle Bottom Triangle Top A triangle pattern is defined by a series of at least five consecutive points of lower highs and higher lows. Sufficient volume is required. The minimum number of hours the triangle pattern must be in effect for the bottom or top to be recognized. This quality is a measure of both time and volume i.e. twotimes normal volume during one hour is considered two hours of trading. Inverted Head and Shoulders Head and Shoulders A standard or inverted head-and-shoulders pattern is defined by five consecutive turning points with the first and last at about the same price level, the second and fourth at similar highs or lows, and the third at the highest low or high in the sequence. The minimum number of hours the pattern must be in effect to be recognized. This quality is a measure of both time and volume i.e. two-times normal volume during one hour is considered two hours of trading. 25 5-Minute High Generated when a high or low is recorded relative to the No Quality field available 5-Minute Low price range of the previous same-length interval. 26 Trailing Stop, % Up Trailing Stop, % Down Generated when a reversal of a specified percentage occurs. The percentage amount of the reversal (default 0.25%). A reversal from a low or high is indicated by a plus or minus sign respectively. Trailing Stop, Volatility Up Trailing Stop, Volatility Down 1-Minute Opening Range Breakout 1-Minute Opening Range Breakdown Generated when a reversal of a specified multiple of volatility occurs. Resistance and support are set at the high and low for a particular interval from the open. An alert is generated when the stock price breaks through either resistance (breakout) or support (breakdown). Note: The opening interval begins at the first bid, ask, or trade (not necessarily the start of trading). Also, to reduce false signals, there is a blackout period of one minute after the high and low are determined for the period. The volatility multiple for the reversal (default 1).
