2 Amsonia hubrichtii Arkansas bluestar Collector's Corner An erect, clump-forming plant that features blue spring flowers, feathery green summer foliage and golden fall color. Powdery blue, star-like flowers in terminal clusters in late spring 3' tall stems. Leaves turn bright gold in fall. Flowers last longer if given some afternoon shade. Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil. Full sun to part shade. Grows to 2-3 tall and wide. Arisaema triphyllum Jack in the pulpit D A spring woodland wildflower. Flower is an erect spadix with tiny flowers, and a sheath-like spathe that forms a hood. Spathe is usually green or purple on the outside; inside is striped purple and greenish white. Two large leaves with three leaflets provide shade to the flower. Goes dormant by mid-summer. est grown in fertile, medium to wet soil. Part to full shade. Grows to 24 tall and 18 wide. Dyschoriste oblongifolia twinflower A short-lived perennial with showy, lavender flowers. Grows quickly to form a rounded, fine-textured plant. Paired lavender flowers occur throughout the growing season with heaviest bloom in May. Useful as a ground cover. Tolerant of dry soils. Grows well on acidic, well-drained, sandy soils. Erythrina 'idwillii' idwell's coral tree A deciduous multi-stemmed shrub. looms continually on new growth with peak flowering in summer. arrow 2" long dark red flowers are on 2-3' spikes that arch out and above the foliage. H Erythronium americanum trout lily One of the earliest spring flowers. Features two mottled basal leaves, and a small yellow lily nodding from the top of a scape. The flower opens each morning and closes each night. Plants require 5-6 years to mature. Spreads from offshoots of the corm. Foliage disappears in summer. Prefer a humus rich soil. Shade. Grows to ft. tall and wide, to 35 ft. tall as a single-trunk tree. 4" Pinckneya bracteata fevertree A large, open shrub or small tree with coarse, rich-green leaves at branch ends. Flowers are yellowish-green and tubular with five, reflexed lobes, and showy white, pink or rose sepals reminiscent of poinsettias. Under cultivation, this tree responds well to fertile, well-drained soil. Part shade. Grows 10-30' tall. Salvia darcyi Darcy's Mexican sage An evergreen (winter climate dependent) salvia from Mexico. Spreads by stolons to produce wide clumps that are densely covered with aromatic, pastel green leaves. Terminal racemes of large, bright coral-red flowers in late spring and again in fall. Prefers loamy soil, but will tolerate clay. Provide regular irrigation, but do not overwater. Drought tolerant. Sun to part sun. Grows to 2-4' tall and spreads. Sequoia sempervirens coast redwood A narrow-conical, evergreen conifer. Features flat, bright green needles (1 ), oblong seed cones (1.25,) long and furrowed, and reddish-brown bark on a straight trunk that is flared outward at the base. Species is monoecious. Grows best in cool, moist climates with consistently high moisture levels. Cuttings from SCG trees. Full sun. Grows to 60-80' tall and 15-25' wide. 3 Shortia galacifolia Oconee bells Collector's Corner A very rare evergreen herbaceous perennial with round, glossy, dark green, basal leaves similar to galax (but smaller, with pale veins, wavy margins, & w/o basal lobes). Solitary white to pinkish bell-shaped flowers on leafless stalks in early spring. Spreads by underground runners. ative habitat is streambanks and slopes of gorges in high rainfall areas. Shade. Grows to 6" in height and spreads slowly. Tagetes lemmonii mountain marigold A sprawling, shrubby half-hardy perennial daisy with aromatic foliage. Lacy compound leaves have serrated leaflets. Flower heads (2") have bright yellow-gold rays and darker yellow discs. Well drained soil is a must. Very tolerant of drought conditions. looms only during short-day seasons. Grows to 4' tall and 6' wide. Trillium cuneatum toadshade; little sweet etsy The most vigorous and lagest of our eastern sessile trilliums flowering in March-April. Flower is maroon. Found in rich, mostly upland woods, especially on limestone soils. Offered are 4 year old plants from a local collection. Will flower at 6-7 years old. Shade. Grows to a little over 1' tall. 4 Aronia arbutifolia chokeberry Deciduous Shrubs A multi-stemmed shrub that is native to both wet and dry thickets. Grows in a vase-shaped form and tends to sucker and form colonies. Clusters of white to light pink, 5-petaled flowers appear in spring, and are followed by abundant glossy red fruits. Foliage turns bright red in autumn. Wide range of soil tolerance including boggy soils. Full sun to part shade. Grows to 6-10' tall and 3-6' wide. Aronia arbutifolia 'rilliantissima' red chokeberry A compact cultvar that produces abundant glossy red berries and has vibrant red leaves in the fall. White-pink flowers in clusters in spring. May produce suckers. Wide range of soil tolerances including boggy soils. Full sun to part shade. Grows to 6-8' high. Callicarpa americana beautyberry A loose, open shrub for winter interest and naturalizing. Flowers on new growth and produces brilliant violet fruits encircling the stems in the fall. Reported to bear more fruit if several are planted together. Prefers the soil of its natural forest floor habitat - a moist clay or sand enriched with organic matter. Requires full sun to part shade. Grows 6-10' tall and 6-12' wide. Calycanthus raulstonii 'Hartlage Wine' Raulston's allspice Developed by the J.C. Raulston Arboretum at CSU. Has very large and showy wine-red flowers in spring. Foliage is a deep, dark-green and stems are maroon. Thrives in semi-shade in a fertile, well-drained soil. (Syn. Xsinocalycalycanthus raulstonii.) Semi-shade. Grows 6-8' tall and wide. Cephalanthus occidentalis buttonbush A rounded, open branched. wetland shrub with tiny, creamy white flowers (1") in dense spherical heads. Sweetly fragrant and produced over a long period in late spring and summer. Typically grows in places that have standing water part of the year. Cannot tolerate drought. Responds well to pruning. Full sun is best. Typically grows to 6-8 tall and wide. H Chaenomeles superba 'Cameo' flowering quince A hybrid flowering quince (C. japonica x C. speciosa) noted for double peach-pink flowers (before leaves fully unfold), and compact shape. Clerodendrum trichotum harlequin glorybower A coarse, sometimes unkempt, shrub or small tree noted for late summer flowers, showy fruit and foliage that smells like peanut butter. 5 Clethra alnifolia 'Ruby Spice' summersweet; sweet pepperbush Deciduous Shrubs Produces fragrant, rose-pink summer flowers and also has an attractive yellow color in the fall. 6 Hydrangea paniculata 'Tardiva' panicle hydrangea Deciduous Shrubs A vigorous, upright, rapid-growing, somewhat coarsely textured, deciduous shrub. Features upright, sharply-pointed, conical, terminal flower panicles (6-8 ) from mid-summer into fall. Prune as needed in late winter to early spring. est as a large, multi-stemmed shrub. 8 Rhododendron colemanii Red Hills azalea Deciduous Shrubs A recently identified native azalea species that grows in the Red Hills region of Southern AL and eastward along the Chattahoochee River. One of the tallest, most richly colored and fragrant of all the native azaleas. Late blooming, fragrant flowers can be white or pink (rarely yellow) and appear after leaves. Moist, well drained, acidic soils. Part shade. Grows to 8-12 tall and 6-10 wide. Rhododendron 'Darlin's Dream' hybrid native azalea Sweetly fragrant, crisp white blooms with lavender edging plus a golden yellow throat. Parents are R. canescens and R. alabamense. looms are funnel-shaped. Handsome light green foliage. One of the larger and more impressive azalea cultivars. Partial shade. Grows tall and 6-8 wide. H Rhododendron flammeum 'Florence Oconee azalea A robust selection of R. flammeum. Selected and named by Charles Webb of Superior Trees in Florida. Large terminal clusters of bright orange flowers in spring after foliage emerges. Distinguish from R. austrinum by flowers usually with a blotch, no fragrance, and no sticky glandular hairs. Moist but well drained, acidic soils. Part shade. Grows to 6-8 tall and 4-6 wide. H Rhododendron flammeum 'Pure Orange' Oconee azalea A selection of our native Oconee azalea featuring slightly fragrant, funnel shaped, pure orange flowers in ball-shaped trusses. Flowers in midseason. Form is an attractive mound. Well-drained, acidic soils. Part shade. Grows to 6-8' tall and 4-6' wide. Rhododendron 'My Mary' My Mary azalea H A deciduous hybrid azalea (R. acoochee x R. austrinum). est in acidic, humusy, organically rich, medium moisture, moisture-retentive but well-drained soils. Fragrant, tubular flowers are bright yellow with orange tubes in clusters in April- May. Requires part shade. Grows to 4-6' tall by 3-5' wide. Rhododendron prunifolium plumleaf azalea A large shrub or small tree, multi-stemmed with an upright habit and tiered branching. Flowers, in a raceme of four to seven, appear in July to August predominately in shades of red to orange-red to orange and are partially hidden by foliage. Moist, cool, well-drained acidic soils high in organic matter. Part shade. Grows to 8-15' tall. Rhododendron 'Sautee Sunset' hybrid native azalea Vibrant, hot pink blooms streaked with subtler tones of cream and apricot on ball-shaped trusses as early as mid April. Reblooms for months. Prefers acidic soil and organic matter. Shallow rooted and prefers consistently moist conditions. Add a layer of coarse mulch around the roots and water frequently in summer. Part to full shade. Grows to 6-8 tall. H Rhododendron 'Summer Eyelet' hybrid native azalea A strong growing selection of our native R. vicosum. Handsome, glossy, dark green foliage and spicy, clove-like scented white flowers in clusters in mid summer. Well-drained soils, medium moisture. Mulching is always a positive with any rhododendron. Grows to 5' tall and 4' wide. Rhododendron 'Tangerine Delight Tangerine Delight azalea One of the best orange native azalea crosses (Rhododendron calendulaceum X Knaphill hybrids). Clusters of brilliant orange, fragrant flowers in mid spring. A fast-growing shrub that is very adaptable to environmental stresses and easy to grow. Good choice for the novice to native azaleas. 9 Rhus aromatica 'Gro-Low' fragrant sumac Deciduous Shrubs A dense, rambling, low-growing shrub. Leaves and twigs are aromatic. Flowers are not showy, but are followed by impressive red fruit. Tolerates clay and dry soils. Full sun to part shade. Grows 2' high and up to 8' wide. Rubus 'Ouachita' thornless blackberry Ouachita blackberry was bred by the University of Arkansas. Glossy black, medium sized plump berries from early to midsummer on upright thornless canes that do not need support. May be grown as a hedge. Great disease resistance. Excellent for freezing, pies and jams. Well-drained, fertile, slightly acidic soils. Mulch heavily. Full sun. Grows on average to 4-5 tall and 5-6 wide. Spiraea 'ailcarol' Sundrop spirea A hardy golden spirea that holds foliage color even in the hottest of summers. Petite foliage grows densely on a dwarf rounded habit.
