CaptionTube is a free online captioning program that allows users to create captions and/or subtitles for their videos hosted on YouTube. Getting Started with CaptionTube 1. Go to and click Sign in with a Google Account at the top of the page (you will need a Google account to work with the program.) 2. Click on the Specific Video button in the box on the right side. Figure 1. Specific Video button. 3. The Import Video screen will pop up. Here, you ll need to paste in the link to the YouTube video you want to caption (the url, not the embed code). Then click the Import button.

3 Adding Captions 1. Once you ve selected Edit, the captioning window will open. Here, you can use the square play button to play the video. Listen for a bit, select the button again to stop, and click the Add Caption button to type in your caption. 2. Once done, click Save Caption. Figure 4. Caption Creation Screen. 3. Try to keep each caption at a reasonable length remember, each caption will be shown in its entirety at one time and you don t want to cover over too much of the video. 4. Press play again, listen a bit longer, stop the video and type in another caption. Repeat the process until the video is concluded. Editing Captions 1. 4 Figure 5. CaptionTube List Tab. 2. This will present all the captions you ve typed in a list on the right. Clicking on any of them will open them in the box on the left. Here, you can correct any mistakes and adjust the timing of when the caption will appear on the screen. Once you ve finished editing the caption, click Save and move onto the next one. Figure 6. 5 Previewing the Captioned Video 1. Click the Preview tab at the top of the Captioning workspace. Click on the video to make it play. Figure 7. Preview Screen 2. If you find a mistake, click the List tab, edit the needed captions and then preview again. ing and Publishing the Captioned Video to YouTube 1. 6 Figure 8. Publish Button 2. Choose to Download to My Computer. Make sure SubRip/.srt is checked. Click Copy and Paste. 3. Highlight and copy everything in the box. Figure 9. Copy and Paste screen 4. Open a notepad file on your computer. Paste the text into the notepad file and save it as Captions for [Name of Video] to easily find it (it helps to put it on the desktop at this point). 5. Find the file, right click on it and select rename. Replace the.txt extension with.srt. You ll get a warning, but hit okay. 6. 7 Uploading.srt Files to YouTube Videos If you have a channel on YouTube and someone has ed you an.srt caption file to upload, use the following steps. 1. Go to YouTube.com, log in, go to your channel and click the Video Manager button. Figure 10. Video Manager button. 2. Find the desired video, click on the link to open it, then click on the Add Closed Captions button beneath the video. Figure 11. 8 3. Click the Upload Caption File or Transcript button, find the.srt file on your computer, and click Open. 4. You ll next see an upload screen that asks to confirm the type of file. Make sure the Caption file is selected (and English is the default language selected if it has already been selected as part of your profile you won t need to change that unless subtitling in another language). Click Upload. Figure 12. Caption Upload screen 5. You should now see a bar with English written on it. Clicking this bar will open up the captions. You can now review and make any necessary changes. If no changes need to be made, click Done. 6.
