2 Graduate Degree Programs Masters of Music - Jazz Studies - Music Composition - Music Education - Music Performance Certificate Program in Music Performance - 24 hours of applied study -12 hours of related study - ensemble participation
3 Graduate Degree Programs All masters degree programs for graduate students must total 48 quarter hours. The Certificate program totals 36 quarter hours.
4 Quarter System 10 weeks each quarter, fall-winter-spring - Academic Calendar - Academic courses usually are worth 4 quarter hours; others are worth 2 or 1.
5 Residency Requirement All 48 hours of a student s masters degree and 36 hours of a performance certificate must be completed at DePaul.
6 Status Requirement School of Music graduate students must be enrolled in 6 or more credits each quarter to have full-time status.
7 International Student Requirement International students who have F-1 and J-1 visa status must be enrolled as a full-time student for each quarter to maintain their lawful student status.
8 Diagnostic Examination A diagnostic examination is required in music theory/history during orientation for performance, music education, and composition majors. Exam results guide course selection. 1 of 3 core courses required in music theory Placement into a basic or advanced theory course

13 Applied Music MM Requirements vary by degree program - 24 qh, Performance - 12 qh, Jazz Studies Limit of 4 quarter hours per quarter - Students may study 4 qh with one instructor or split between 2 instructors, 2 qh and 2 qh.
14 Ensembles Students who receive performance awards must participate in ensembles as assigned. Register for performing ensembles carefully. Performance graduate students register for 0 credit large ensembles. Jazz students need to register for 1 credit ensembles.
15 Classical Chamber Music Register for chamber music on the College Office website. Requests for placement will be considered, but coordinators are responsible for assignments. You may enroll in one chamber ensemble per quarter for 0 credit. To be in a second group, you will be charged for the 1 credit registration. #1 mistake check your registration to be sure you are registered for the correct credits.
16 Specialization Requirements Course requirements in the specialization vary by major. Careful planning is necessary because courses are not offered every year. When in doubt, refer to the coordinators and chairs.

18 Degree Progress Report & Course History Use the Degree Progress Report to determine your progress towards graduation Go to the DePaul web site, Campus Connect, to click on the degree progress report option Course History available online through Campus Connect, 24 hours a day
19 Comprehensive Examinations At the completion of your degree, you will need to successfully pass your comprehensive examinations. Performance: Each area of specialization will give you 3 questions to respond to in writing. Contact your department chair for more information about the comprehensive exams.
20 Final Projects Composition and Jazz composition students need to submit final compositions. Music education students need to complete a final research paper.
21 Recitals Apply for recital according to the Performance Office procedures and policies. Co-register for applied lessons the quarter you give a recital. Pay careful attention to the information, procedures, and deadlines put in place by the Performance Office!

30 FAQ Graduate full-time load What is considered a full-time load? Anything from 6-8 credit hours is considered a full-time load for a graduate student. At this level, you are eligible for all privileges of full-time students, e.g., U-PASS, medical, loans.
31 FAQ Grade Point Average What are the eligibility requirements? Students need to make meaningful progress towards the degree in order to remain in the program. A minimal GPA of 2.5 is required. Graduate courses require a C- or better in order for the student to pass.
32 FAQ Withdrawal from classes? Deadlines: Before 2 weeks, No Penalty After 2 nd week, W Grade After 7 th Week, FX Grade In case of a medical or personal emergency, students may request withdrawal after the deadlines with proper documentation. See Dean of Students.
33 FAQ How long do I have to finish my degree? Graduate students have a maximum of 6 years to complete the degree, from the time of the first enrollment. If a student needs to extend beyond these six years due to extenuating circumstances, a request may be put in writing and will be reviewed by the School of Music Exceptions Committee.
