1 05 Language Proficiency Requirements (JLPT, EJU, TOEFL) Language Requirements Applicants must submit either 1 or 2 in addition to 4 from the below list. In the case that the overseas applicants cannot submit either 1 or 2, they may submit Level 2 or higher of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test Certificate (past certificate acceptable) of Political Science 2. Score for Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) (score must be equivalent to Level 2 on the Japanese Language Proficiency Test) See special remarks below. 3. Certificate of Japanese language proficiency issued from an educational institution (certificate must indicate an equivalency of Level 2 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test and must be signed by the president of the institution and university faculty in Japanese studies.) 4. A scorecard from TOEFL, TOEIC, or IELTS. (*Students who are applying for the "Research student (non-degree) program are not required to submit scorecards.) <Master's / Research Students> Submit a certificate or scorecard *1 that certifies one of the following: "TOEFL-iBT of over 70 pts *2 ", "TOEIC of over 670 pts, "EIKEN of at least Grade Pre-1 ", "JLPT of at least Level 2" or "EJU of over 220 pts" *1: All certificates/scorecards must be from exams taken within 3 years from the application submission deadline. Scores from exams taken over 3 years ago are not accepted. However, this limitation does not apply to JLPT and EJU certificates. In this case, the exam must have been taken within 3 years, excluding any time period that the applicant was enrolled in a Japanese university. *2: Other than a TOEFL-iBT score of over 70 pts, a TOEFL-CBT of over 195 pts, or a TOEFL-PBT of over 525 pts are also acceptable. of Economics <Doctoral > (1)If applying for Japanese language research supervision Submit a certificate or scorecard *1 that certifies one of the following: "TOEFL-iBT of over 79 pts *2 ", "JLPT of at least Level 2", "EJU of over 220 pts". *1: All certificates/scorecards must be from exams taken within 3 years from the application submission deadline. Scores from exams taken over 3 years ago are not accepted. However, this limitation does not apply to JLPT and EJU certificates. In this case, the exam must have been taken within 3 years, excluding any time period that the applicant was enrolled in a Japanese university. *2: Other than a TOEFL-iBT score of over 79 pts, a TOEFL-CBT of over 213 pts, or a TOEFL-PBT of over 550 pts are also acceptable. (2) If applying for English language research supervision No scorecard submission is required of native English speakers. If English is not the applicant's native language a scorecard *3 with "TOEFL-iBT of over 79 pts *4 must 1

2 be submitted. *3: Scorecards must be from exams taken within 3 years from the application submission deadline. *4: Other than a TOEFL-iBT score of over 79 pts, a TOEFL-CBT of over 195 pts, or a TOEFL-PBT of over 525 pts are also acceptable. Law Applicants must submit a Level 1 Certificate of Japanese Language Proficiency (taken at any time) or a EJU score(taken at any time). See special remarks below. Letters, Arts and Sciences All applicants must submit a certificate indicating them as Level 1 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (past certificates are also acceptable) or a score report of the Japanese section of the EJU (past scores acceptable). See special remarks below. Students are allowed to apply for the Master's and doctoral programs without the above-required certificates on condition that they will take the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (Level 1) in December <Master's Program, Research Student Program> All applicants must submit a Certificate of Japanese Language Proficiency Test or other documents indicating Japanese proficiency (issuing institution and style not designated).there is no need to submit any certificates for English language proficiency, such as the TOEFL scorecard. Commerce (a) International students who have not completed a Master's program in Japan must submit certificate of Japanese Language Proficiency Test or other documents indicating Japanese proficiency (issuing institution and style not designated). However, applicants wishing to research in English only under supervisors marked with an (*) in the supervisor list ( )are exempt from this condition. (b)applicants wishing to research in English only under supervisors marked with an (*) in the supervisor list ( )that are not native English speakers must submit English language proficiency scores in the form of TOEFL, IELTS or TOEIC scorecard reports. 2

3 <Master's Program, Research Student Program> Applicants must submit one of the following (past certificates acceptable) 1. Score Report of Level 1 Japanese Language Proficiency Test (score above 250 required) 2. Level 2 Certificate of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test 3. Score report of Japanese section of the EJU. See special remarks below s of Fundamental/ Creative/ Advanced Sciences and Engineering However, for the Advanced Science, "International Student Program without Japanese Language Entrance Requirement* " applicants for departments other than Electrical Engineering and Bioscience, do not need to submit the above. *These applicants are not required to have Japanese language skills at time of application. (No need to submit Japanese language ability certificate). (As a general rule, these applicants will take courses in English after admission) There is no need to submit the Certificate of Japanese Language Proficiency and the score report of the Japanese section of the EJU unless the professor from whom the applicant wishes to receive supervision requires them. However, applicants whose native language is not English or who have not completed a Master s degree in an English speaking country should submit TOEFL, TOEIC, or IELTS score report cards. All applicants must submit a Level 1 "Certificate of Japanese Language Proficiency" and the "JLPT Test Result" (taken at any time) or an equivalent score on the Japanese section of the EJU. See special remarks below. Education Applicants to the Master's program in English Education are required to also submit a TOEFL score report card (taken within the past 2 years, copy of score report card acceptable). The minimum TOEFL requirement is 520 on the PBT, 190 on the CBT, or 68 on the ibt (ITP not acceptable). 3

4 Human Sciences <Master's Programs (Two-years)> Applicants must submit either a TOEFL or a TOEIC score report. However, please submit this during the application period of the Human Sciences (Sept. 1-4, 2009). You do not have to submit this when submitting your application to the IAO (International Admissions Office). *International student applicants (those applying through the IAO) do not have to take the English test given at the entrance exam. The TOEFL or TOEIC score report (only those taken after September 2007 are valid) that is to be submitted to the graduate school will be used to determine English language abilities instead. Applicants must also submit a certificate or equivalent document of Japanese proficiency (any certificate is acceptable). <Programs other than the Master's Programs (Two-years)> Applicants must submit a certificate or equivalent document of Japanese proficiency (any certificate is acceptable). <Master's and Doctoral Programs> All applicants must submit one of the following at the time of application: Social Sciences 1. Score Report of Level 1 Japanese Language Proficiency Test (score above 250 required) and the JLPT Test Result 2. Level 2 Certificate of the Japanese Language Proficiency and Score Report of JLPT 3. Score report of the Japanese section of the EJU. See special remarks below In addition to Japanese language proficiency certificates, applicants must submit the following certificates of language proficiency. Submit TOEFL score record card results <Master's Program> Refer to the section entitled "Faculty Directory" in the "List of Areas of Research & Faculty Directory" section and submit the language requirements determined by the professors. Sports Sciences Applicants must submit a certificate or equivalent document of Japanese proficiency (any certificate acceptable). 4

5 (Special Remarks) If applicants cannot submit their JLPT, EJU, or TOEFL score report results to the International Admissions Office by the IAO submission deadline, they must submit their examination admission card (jyukenhyou) as proof that they have taken the examination. (If score reports are not submitted by the time of entrance exam registration procedures at the graduate school, the application will be withdrawn from consideration.) The Schools of Economics, Law, Education and Letters, Art and Sciences require a minimum score of 220 on the Japanese section of the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students. The Schools of Political Science, Fundamental/Creative/Advanced Science and Engineering and Social Science require at least 200. Applicants may submit photocopies of score report cards of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students, and TOEFL. The conditions for s who have not specified the program for application are the dame for all three programs (Master s, Doctoral and Research Student Program).
