1 RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM RDT 101: INTRODUCTION TO RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY Summer II 2014 COURSE DESCRIPTION This course provides an introduction to the radiologic technology profession, reviews the imaging modalities and explains the ethical responsibilities of the radiologic technologist. This course also provides basic principles of radiation protection, radiographic exposure and image production. Medical terminology, abbreviations and symbols associated with human structure and function, and radiology, are studied. Hours: 36 lecture. Prerequisite: Permission of the department head. Course fee: $40. Usually offered in the summer. 5 COURSE CONTENT Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Communicate using medical terminology. 2. Identify the role of the Radiologic Technologist in the delivery of health care. 3. Describe the purpose of professional organizations in radiographic programs and health care institutions. 4. Explain the policies and procedures contained within the RDT Student Handbook. 5. Identify the radiographic modalities and the responsibilities of the technologist. 6. Identify and describe the components of the radiographic x-ray tube. 7. Define scope of practice as it applies to the Radiologic Technologist. 8. Explain the process of x-ray production. 9. Identify the exposure variable located on the imaging console and the role each has in x- ray production. 10. Define the cardinal rules of radiation protection and describe their application. 11. Define culture and describe how an individual s belief system will affect healthcare delivery. 12. Describe the legal responsibilities of the Radiologic Technologist. 13. Define legal terms and explain their application to healthcare delivery. 14. Explain the interaction of x-radiation with matter. 15. Describe image acquisition methods. 16. Identify study techniques which can be applied by a student radiographer in the program. 17. Differentiate between the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor learning domains. 18. Demonstrate basic patient care skills necessary for transition into the clinical practicum. The RDT course content reflects the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) Radiography curriculum, the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Licensure examination requirements, and the master plan of education enforced by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Sciences (JRCERT). ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY: Students found exhibiting any of the following types of behavior during or in the preparation/performance of any quiz, project, report, test, or final exam will receive a zero "0" for the assignment, and the student conduct violation will be referred to the Student-Faculty Disciplinary Committee. Cheating will not be tolerated in the Radiologic Technology program. Students found cheating will be DISMISSED from the Radiologic Technology program. A. Cheating is defined as the act of obtaining information or data improperly or by dishonest or deceitful means; and B. Plagiarism is defined as the copying or imitating the language, ideas, or thoughts of another author and presenting them as one's original work, the copying of a theme or section from a book or magazine without giving credit in a footnote or copying from the manuscript of another student. Sharing information present on a quiz or test are examples of academic dishonesty and will result in a grade of F for the course and immediate dismissal from the Radiologic Technology program. 5

6 CLASS GUIDELINES/EXPECTATIONS 1. Be punctual and arrive to class before the scheduled meeting prepared to learn. 2. Attend all class sessions in their entirety. 3. Submit only completed work. Partially completed assignments will earn a grade of 0. No late assignments will be accepted. 4. Read assigned chapters in the textbook(s) before class meetings. 5. Ask questions to the instructor and attend scheduled tutoring sessions for clarification on course content areas. EMERGENCY INFORMATION: In the event of a flu epidemic or other emergency that results in the suspension of classes, faculty will be communicating with students about their courses and course requirements, such as assignments, quiz and exam dates, and class and grading policies, via faculty websites or Blackboard. Students will be responsible for completing all these assignments in accordance with class policies. Information about the resumption of classes will be communicated via the College's website and system. RDT students are responsible for all assignments and due dates outlined in the course syllabus regardless if the college has been closed due to an emergency. ATTENDANCE Students are expected to attend all class sessions. When a student misses a class session, it is the student s responsibility to acquire the information reviewed and ask questions to the course instructor during tutoring and/or another scheduled time. Students absent from class will not be permitted to make-up missed quizzes or graded assessments administered during the scheduled class session. CLASS COMMUNICATION: Blackboard is used in all RDT courses as a source of communication between instructors and students. Weekly announcements and s will be posted in Blackboard. Students are required to use Blackboard to submit assignments and for class communication. It is the student s responsibility to enter Blackboard daily in all RDT courses to view messages, announcements, retrieve class notes, and review materials. BLACKBOARD: Blackboard is used as a supplementary site for all RDT courses. To access course content in Blackboard you need to have access to a computer with an Internet connection, (other requirements may apply). Computers that meet these requirements are available on campus in MTC 200, AAB 217, HH 100, GH 204, WDC 305, and AHB 108. 7 BLACKBOARD COMPONENTS The following are tools the course instructor will be using in Blackboard: Syllabus: The posted course syllabus documents the didactic schedule, assignments, due dates, and information pertinent to the course. Messages: from the course instructor will be located under the messages section of Blackboard. Students may the instructor and other students in the class through messages. is the primary method of communication between students and the course instructor outside of the classroom. Students should visit the messages section daily in the course for new information sent by the instructor. Course Content: The following items will be located within the course content of Blackboard: (1) PowerPoint Presentations, (2) Study Guides and Reviews, and (3) Assignment information. Content folders will be labeled by the dates/weeks in the semester to organize course material. Discussions: Answer questions posted by the course instructor. Follow the discussion question rubric contained within the course syllabus when completing discussion questions. Grades: Students can view grades in Blackboard. All graded assessments will be recorded into Blackboard. BLACKBOARD INTEGRITY All students logging into Blackboard affirm that they understand and agree to follow Wor-Wic Community College policies regarding academic integrity and the use of College resources as described in the college catalog. RDT TUTORING Students are encouraged to attend RDT Tutoring to assist in the comprehension of course content. Tutoring will be offered every week throughout summer session II. The course instructor will , text, and/or verbally communicate tutoring availability. 7

8 HYBRID COURSE OUTLINE RDT 101 Introduction to Radiologic Technology is a hybrid course providing instruction through a face-to-face and online structure. The semester is broken down into weeks. Each week begins on Monday and ends on Sunday. All course assignments submitted through Blackboard are due at 11:00 pm on Sunday nights. Students are required to thoroughly complete all assignments/activities. No incomplete or half-attempted work will be accepted. Refer to the course assignment section of the syllabus for due dates, times, and required criteria for each assignment. ONLINE DISCUSSION RESPONSES (GEO 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8) (CO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11) Students will answer discussion questions online in reference to the assigned course content for RDT 101. The objective of the discussion questions is for students to apply information reviewed in the classroom/online and to build a collaborative learning community. Directions for Online 1. Answer the question or questions provided by the course instructor in Blackboard. 2. Students will Click Reply and answer the question or questions provided by the course instructor. 3. Refer to Discussion Post Rubric for the grading criteria for this assignment. Correct spelling and accurate use of grammar are required for college level communication and are part of the discussion post grade. 4. Please remember that this is an online college course room. Students are not permitted to use instant messaging language. Students are required to answer questions in complete sentences using Standard English Language. ALL ONLINE DISCUSSION RESPONSES ARE DUE BY 11:00 PM EST ON THE DUE DATE. One minute past the due date is considered late and will not be accepted for a grade. Computer failure or electrical power loss due to inclement weather are not considered excuses for late work. Failure to complete online discussions responses will result in a grade of 0 for the assignment. Discussion responses are a requirement for this hybrid course. MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY ASSIGNMENTS (GEO 1, 2, 3, 7) (CO 1) Students will learn medical terminology as a portion of the RDT 101 course. A medical terminology online course will assist students in the comprehension of the language of medicine. The online course is available through Evolve. Students are required to purchase an access code to use the website. Students will complete quizzes and exams in Evolve serving as medical terminology assignments in this course. Medical terminology assignments will come from the Evolve online course and additional Medical terminology assignments will be posted in Blackboard by the instructor. In RDT 101, medical terminology assignments will come from chapters 1 and 2 of the : A Short Course textbook and from the Introduction to Radiologic Technology Textbook. Failure to complete medical terminology assignments according to the designated due dates located within the course syllabus will result in a grade of 0 for the assignment. 8

9 MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY QUIZZES/EXAMS (GEO 1, 2, 3, 7) (CO 1) Students will complete medical terminology quizzes and exams located in the Evolve online course modules. Each quiz and exam has a start and an end date. Students are not permitted to use notes or other resources to complete the quizzes or exams. Students who fail to complete quizzes or exams within the documented dates/times will receive a grade of 0. Quizzes and exams are timed. Students are required to complete the quiz or test within the designated time. Students may complete the quizzes and exams on campus or at home. NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES OR EXAMS WILL BE ADMINISTERED. FAILURE TO COMPLETE THE QUIZ OR EXAM ACCORDING TO THE DUE DATE DOCUMENTED IN THE COURSE SYLLABUS WILL RESULT IN A GRADE OF 0. ** Quizzes and are located through the Evolve website in the Evolve Online : A Short Course. Students need reliable Internet access to complete medical terminology quizzes and exams at home. Students have unlimited access to Evolve quizzes and exams until the due date. Students may access the Evolve quizzes and exams multiple times and the highest grade earned will be recorded. ELECTRONIC/INFORMATION LITERACY WRITING ASSIGNMENT (GEO 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8) (CO 4, 6, 8, 9) The student will complete a paper on the following topic: Study Techniques for a College Student. The student will research the topic for electronic resources in the WWCC database and on the World Wide Web. WIKIPEDIA is not permitted as a resource. Students will provide a minimum of two electronic resources relevant to this topic and write a 500 word minimum, double-spaced paper. The paper should include a cover page and a works cited page (this is not part of the 500 word requirement). Students are to follow APA format for citations which should be included throughout the writing assignment. The grading rubric is provided at the conclusion of the course syllabus. Students should use the paper template provided in Blackboard to complete this assignment. Questions regarding paper content should be directed to the course instructor. The Electronic/ Information Literacy writing assignment is Due July 27, 2014 by 11:00 pm EST in Blackboard through messages (instructor ). NO LATE PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED. FAILURE TO SUBMIT THE PAPER BY 7/27/14 at 11:00 pm EST WILL EARN A 0. The Electronic/Information Literacy assignment is a college requirement. Students are encouraged to follow the rubric provided in the course syllabus when completing this assignment. PATIENT CARE SKILLS PRACTICE (GEO 1, 2, 8) (CO 3, 4) Students will perform basic patient care skills necessary for transitioning into the fall clinical practicum. Instructors will demonstrate the skills and students will practice and/or simulate these skills during class and laboratory sessions. Patient care skills include safe patient transport, infection control, standard precautions, vital signs, oxygen administration, and practicing methods to prevent disease transmission in the healthcare arena. 9

10 TESTS (GEO 1, 2, 3, 5, 7) (CO 1-11) Students will complete tests after covering didactic material in class. Tests will be completed in the WWCC Testing Center. Tests must be completed according to the dates and times outlined within the course syllabus. Tests are timed. NO MAKE-UP TESTS WILL BE ADMINISTERED. FAILURE TO COMPLETE THE TESTS WITHIN THE DATES/TIMES OUTLINED IN THE COURSE SYLLABUS WILL RESULT IN A GRADE OF 0. **Test scores will be posted in Blackboard after all students have completed the test. WWCC TESTING CENTER RDT students will complete tests for RDT 101 in the WWCC Testing Center. According to the testing center policies, students must do the following when entering the center to complete a test or quiz: 1. Present a current school or government-issued photo ID. 2. Provide the name of the instructor teaching the course. 3. Provide the course name and section number. 4. Identify the name of the test. 5. Turn off cell phones and any electronic devices. The testing center maintains a roster of students completing each RDT test and will document date and time the student enters and exits the testing center. The testing center is located in AAB 226. The following are the hours of operation for the testing center: Mondays 10:00 am to 8:00 pm Saturdays 10:00 am to 3:00 pm Tuesdays 10:00 am to 8:00 pm Sundays CLOSED Wednesdays 10:00 am to 8:00 pm Thursdays 10:00 am to 8:00 pm Fridays 10:00 am to 3:00 pm COMPREHENSIVE FINAL EXAMINATION (GEO 1, 2, 3, 5, 7) (CO 1 11) A comprehensive final examination will be administered on August 12, 2014 from 9:00 am 12:00 pm. This test will evaluate ALL material covered in the Introduction to Radiologic Technology course including. The comprehensive final examination will be administered as a paper and pencil test. The comprehensive final exam is timed. No additional time will be awarded if a student arrives late to complete the test. NO MAKE-UP FINAL WILL BE ADMINISTERED. 10

Any student who does not have this access at home will need to make arrangements to complete all coursework on campus. All students are required to complete all coursework according to the due dates documented in the course syllabus. 11
