The goal is to promote literacy learning and further develop each student s existing writing and reading skills for transfer to other academic contexts, such as the English Composition program, through engaging intellectual work. REQUIRED MATERIALS: Notebook Writing Instrument Internet Access Online Learning Platform: You are also responsible for understanding how to use and upload documents to Moodle. I will provide some class instruction. Ultimately it is your responsibility to understand how to use the Moodle Interface and upload documents. You must upload your document as a Word (.doc) file. Improperly uploaded files may result in lowered or failing grades. If I!1

4 WRC 15% Writing and Reading Center Students are required to attend a minimum of six tutoring sessions at the WRC throughout the course of the semester. These will be one-on-one tutoring sessions in which students will receive a variety of instruction related to writing and reading such as feedback on drafts of writing projects in ENG 099 or assistance with MySkillsLab. The student grade attributed to the WRC work will be determined by a student s documented attendance at the tutoring sessions. It further assumes that there is much more instruction absorbed in the classroom than can be tested on examinations. Therefore, students are expected to attend all regularly scheduled class meetings and should exhibit good faith in this regard. Course Attendance Policy: The Languages and Literature Department adheres strictly to Lincoln University policy, which permits three (3) absences. After the three (3) absences, the final grade will be lowered. A student s grade may be lowered for each absence over 3 (e.g. 4 Absences: Highest Possible grade= B, 5=C, 6=D, 7=F) This includes suspensions. Seven (7) absences will most likely result in FAILURE of the course. A student is late IMMEDIATELY AFTER ROLE HAS BEEN TAKEN. The tardy student is responsible for informing the professor at the conclusion of class of attendance in that class. Three (3) late arrivals are equal to one (1) absence. Three (3) early exits will equal one absence. A late and an early exit will be counted as an absence. Talking on a cell phone, texting, listening to headphones in class or other behavior that is deemed by me to be distracting to the point where a student is not thinking about nor appears to be focused on class work (including looking at your lap or having your hands on your lap) may be counted as an absence.!7
8 If a student knows that a class will be missed for any reason including suspension, please notify me immediately. This does not excuse the absence; it is respectful and helps with record keeping and lesson design. Attendance begins on the day a student s name appears on the roster. UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC INTEGRITY STATEMENT: Students are responsible for proper conduct and integrity in all of their scholastic work. They must follow a professor's instructions when completing tests, homework, and laboratory reports, and must ask for clarification if the instructions are not clear. In general, students should not give or receive aid when taking exams, or exceed the time limitations specified by the professor. In seeking the truth, in learning to think critically, and in preparing for a life of constructive service, honesty is imperative. Honesty in the classroom and in the preparation of papers is therefore expected of all students. Each student has the responsibility to submit work that is uniquely his or her own. All of this work must be done in accordance with established principles of academic integrity. POLICY ON ELECTRONIC DEVICES IN CLASSROOM: Electronic devices may only be used in conjunction with course activities or by permission of instructor. EXEMPTION PORTFOLIOS Students are placed into English 099 based on a placement exam or after having successfully passed ENG 098. If a student and professor believe that the student has been misplaced, is able to perform at the English Composition I (ENG 101) level, and should be in a higher section of Composition, then the student, with the professor s consent, will submit a portfolio to the English Department Composition Program for review. The student must have received a B+ grade at midterm. Then the student may submit a portfolio of work done outside of class including a timed blue book essay and two multi-draft essays. Portfolios will be submitted to a special committee of Department faculty. If the committee members concur with the recommendation, the student will be advanced. 9 The student is responsible for the exemption portfolio, including understanding the directions and turning in all portfolio materials by the due date. Late submissions will not be accepted. The University Academic Integrity policy must be followed. Formatting: All formal assignments are due as specified on the specific assignment instructions. Unless otherwise specified, MLA (Modern Languages Association) formatting will be used. All assignments must be typed in Times New Roman, 12 point font, doubled spaced, and with one-inch margins. Multiple page assignments must be stapled (if the directions call for a hard copy submission) and have page numbers in the top right corner. Please use the following heading for all papers, inserting appropriate information for the underlined variables. Papers without this heading may be returned without a grade or a lowered grade. Name ENG (or ) Prof. Hoogeveen Date Intriguing Title Signifying Meaning, in Title Case, Centered Double-spaced Times New Roman throughout. No spaces between paragraphs. No emoticons or text-shortcuts. Language aimed at your intended audience. Submission of Assignments: Each assignment will indicate the manner in which it should be submitted (i.e. printed hard copy for class or uploaded to Moodle). Uploaded files should be saved as LastnameFirstInital_title of assignment. For example if I was uploading an assignment titled syllabus, I would save that file as HoogeveenW_syllabus.
