Catalogue Course Description: MBA 568 MANAGERIAL COMMUNICATION (3-0-3)(S). A hands-on introduction to managerial oral communication including informal exchanges, elevator pitches, meetings, and persuasive formal presentations. Emphasis placed on teamoriented communication tactics and change communication strategies. MBA 568 Course Objectives and Assessment Strategies: Management Communication is intended to help participants develop effective written and oral communication strategies and techniques. According to Job Outlook 2012, published by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, teamwork and effective communication skills are the top features employers are looking for in new hires. (Communication skills have held the top position for ten years of this annual survey.) But employers also report that effective communication skills are often the least found skills. is class is intended to assist participants to identify specific management communication skills, explore various techniques to improve those skills as needed, and practice effective communication skills as much as possible. is class will address both written and oral communication. Oral communication will include both formal presentations and informal, everyday communication. e class will also address ethical communication through the Giving Voice to Values program. 3 Team Management Course Components: Participants will be expected to participate in, complete, and reflect upon several individual and team-based activities. Among the deliverables for assessment in this class are: Individual Assessment of Management Core Competencies (2 page max) Individual Personal Performance Plan (2 page max) Four (4) discrete team-based projects, in which participants will serve as team leaders and team members Team-based deliverables for each of the four projects will include: o Planning/Strategy sessions o Data base research and reporting o Report/Product development o Group presentations to the class o 360 self & peer assessments and feedback Ethical communication practice based upon Giving Voice to Values Final Personal Performance Assessment (2 page max) and conference Individual grades for this class will be determined through discussion and joint agreement between the instructor and the participant and based upon self-, peer-, and instructor-based assessments of each course component. Course Structure: All participants in the class will be automatically hired into the Tactical Management Communications company. Tactical Management Communications researches, develops, and markets clear, concise, and compelling management communication tactics ( checklists and training programs) that address core management competencies for MBA students. e program will consist of a series of individual- and team-based (more team than individual) assignments. All participants will review several lists of core competencies for effective managers. ese lists include managing teams, managing employee conflicts, coordinating projects, managing change, assessing performance, making decisions, mentoring and providing feedback, and similar skills. 4 Participants will assess their own proposed career trajectory, identify the most important core management communication competencies, and identify the core communication competencies that they most need to work on. Team Projects: Participants will be assigned to teams of 3 to 4 students. Teams will work on 4 discrete product development projects. To make things slightly more challenging, the teams will change/rotate for each project. Each project will involve new team dynamics. For each project, specific (random) participants will be designated to be Team Managers. All class participants will serve as Team Manager at least once. Teams will work on the same topic/project to facilitate discussion and review. Other than the first project, participants will select the projects to be addressed. Project #1 will be to develop a good checklist for Communication Tactics for Effective Team Management. e project process will generally consist of the following steps: Class #1: Topic/Project Identification: I will meet with the Team Managers during class time to select the topic/competency for the project. Class #1: Team Alignment: Team Managers will meet with the team to communicate goals and objectives, delegate tasks and responsibilities, and develop project timeframes/mileposts. Classes #2 & #3 Team Work: Teams will have one week to research and develop their product. A status meeting with me will occur during one class of the week. Class #4: Team Presentation (Class #4): MBA 568 Sec. 001 Boise State University Fall 2012 Delana Page 4 of 7

5 Teams will present (oral presentation/elevator speech) and defend (Q&A) their products (tactical checklists for accomplishing management core competencies). A rubric will be developed for assessing products (similar to the MBA writing and oral presentation rubrics). One product will be selected as best in show. --Participants will individually allocate 100 points across all the products. --Participants cannot vote for their own product Class #5: Project Assessment & Feedback (Class #5): Personnel assessments: Team Managers will assess Team Members Team Members will assess Team Leaders All participants will complete self-assessments Process assessment All participants will assess their project process and communication abilities FEEDBACK: Class #5 will be devoted to team feedback sessions. Participants will get practice at coaching/mentoring. Learning: All participants will identify strengths and weaknesses e five-class step process will be repeated for each of the four projects. As with any company, all participants will be expected to take an active and responsible role to assess and offer suggestions for the improvement of the company s policies, procedures, and products.
