1 Advanced Management Practices MBA 610 Syllabus for Fall semester SCOB - Robinson Excerpt from online catalog: Advanced coverage of three essential management practices required for long-term business success: problem identification and decision-making, strategic thinking, and organizational change. Global business and ethical issues will also be discussed. Instructor: David F. Robinson, Ph. D. Students will be able to communicate using strategic management concepts and terminology. 2. Students will be able to express the major theories and frameworks underlying business strategy. 3. Students will demonstrate their ability to apply the basic strategy models to business situations. 4. Students will understand basic business decision concepts and problems with human decision-making processes. 5. Students will be able to use decision-making techniques to help them evaluate an organization s strategic situation and evaluate the effectiveness of strategic actions. 6. Students will be able to formulate solutions to organizational challenges and design techniques for effective implementation. 7. Students will demonstrate understanding of the difficulties of creating change in organizations and develop methods for effective change implementation. Course Method This course will include primarily in-class discussion and exercises based on readings and cases to be assigned. Students will often be asked to bring their creative ideas to solve problems and role-play situations. Students will also present material to the class as requested. Expectations You are expected to be actively involved in the class, abide by all university academic honesty policies, and support the learning of your fellow students. Citation of work by others is required. Within the body of your work please use last name of the first author and year published (Robinson, 2007) for example. Include the page number if you are citing a book. Bibliography should be in APA style. Style guides are available online (Purdue has a good website). We will also follow the College of Business style guide for some assignments. 1
2 Cell phones, internet surfing, texting are to be avoided except during class breaks or if you are in a situation where a person s health or safety could be compromised. Please discuss the situation with me before class begins if you feel that you must be able to respond to your cell phone in class. Grading Contribution to class activities (my opinion of your contribution) 20% Assignments/projects (in-class exercises, homework, case questions) 10% Peer evaluations (team-based exercises/projects) 5% Mid-term Exam (in-class exam) up to 25% Project (possible) up to 25% Final Exam (take home and in-class components) up to 40% Note: It is possible that we may do an online collaboration with a number of universities or some other live project or opportunity in which case and other grading allocations may change. Materials Bazerman, Max Judgment in Managerial Decision Making, 6 th edition. I have chosen the 6 th edition because it was updated in 2005 and is widely available in used paperback form.
