3 From the President... By the time you receive this issue of Stritch '76, Spring will have arrived on campus and our grounds will be green again... fresh once more with blossoming trees and shrubbery... and flowers in bloom. Our location in Fox Point-Glendale is truly a beautiful place, a peaceful spot in busy, burgeoning Metropolitan Milwaukee! Meanwhile, we may also expect that many of the young men and women in our Undergraduate Division will " take to the out-of-doors" for impromptu games of softball, tag football, and frisbee flying. It happens every Spring because their youthful energies must find expression, and Stritch is, literally, swept into a dynamic drive to renew itself. That's how it is when a faculty and staff identify and work with America's fine youths of every race, nationality, and creed. If you were able to visit here during April and May, you might find classes being held outside on our lawn... you would view much activity, including the turnover of traffic on our parking lots... and you would experience a spirit of vitality and vibrance that can only be described as "exhilarating." Indoors, you would discover the library crowded with undergraduate and graduate students alike. The several recreation rooms are filled with persons of all ages studying, visiting with friends, or just plain relaxing. Discussions and debates among peers take on new.meanings and added dimensions at this time of year. In addition - because the enthusiasm of young people is so contagious - you would find our faculty and staff responding to this entire regenerative process... for there is nothing that is so revitalizing as the high aspiration and intense desire of youth. Spring on campus is wonderful! To promote student interest in the 1976 Presidential Election, representatives of all candidates entering the Wisconsin primary election were invited to speak on campus, Tues., Mar. 9. Future plans call for continuing participation in activities relating to nation-wide voting next fall. 8 Survey of Graduates Reports Job Placements A comprehensive follow-up study of Stritch's 1975 graduates who earned either the Assoc iate or Bachelor of Arts degree shows that 80.5% of the respondents are now employed, 16.7% are pursuing further education, and only 2.8% are unemployed - according to Sr. Agnes Clare Beyer, director of the Office of Career and Placement Services. Last year's graduating class was distributed as follows : A.A. degree - 33 ; B.A ; B.F.A. - 5; and B.Mus Of these 113 alumni, only 5 (or 4.4% of the total) did not respond to the survey. Graduates of the Master of Arts programs were not contacted for purposes of analysis in this study, Sister Agnes Clare reports. Further Breakdown Cited Among the College's 32 two-year A.A. degree recipients who responded, only two are not employed. Twelve have opted for additional education; 16 have jobs related to their preparation in child care, special education, or dietetics; and only two are otherwise employed. Of the six B.F.A. and B.Mus. graduates who responded, one is taking advanced studies, four are working in the areas of art or music, and one is otherwise employed. None of these alumni is without a job. Stritch's 1975 Bachelor of Arts graduates have an equally imp ressive record. Of these 73 men and women : five are attending graduate school ; 50 are employed in their field of preparation - ranging from foods and nutrition to both teaching and non-teaching posi- Mother Club Ro ter Records All-time High Membership in the Mothers Club reached an all-time high this year - 168, according to Sr. M. Frederick Lochemes, faculty coordinator. The Mothers Club has two events scheduled later this semester: the Easter Luncheon on Wed., Apr. 21, and the Spring Fiesta on Wed., May 19. Earlier this school year, the group presented the OSF Sisters living on campus with an air-conditioner for their residence hall lounge. tions in nine different academic areas ; and 14 are otherwise employed. Only one B.A. graduate is presently lacking work in today's " tight job market." Three others did not answer the questionnaire. Other Data Reported The College's survey findings on 1975 graduates reflect an interesting range of usual and unusual job placements, according to Sister Agnes Clare. For example, while many new teachers who prepared at Stritch are teaching in the public and parochial schools of the City of Milwaukee and its surrounding suburbs, others are employed in such places as Ill inois and Iowa - and as far away as Taiwan and Guam. Dietetic interns have been placed at St. Michael's, Columbia, and St. Mary's (Madison) Hospitals. Other '75 alumni are working fo r such businesses and institutions as Northridge, Hansen Storage, Methode Electronics, Lord Jim, the Boston Store, the Silver Shop, a construction company, Gimbels, banks, day care centers, nursing homes, the Jewish Vocational Services, and the St. Francis Children's Activity and Achievement Center. Some Continue Studies Among last year's 18 A.A. and B.A. graduates who are continuing in higher education, most attend Stritch. Others are enrolled at Stout University. UW-M, the University of Maryland, Alumni Association Assists in Fund Raising; Special Letters Mailed to Academic Maiors For a second year, the Cardinal Stritch College Alumni Association has assumed an active leadership role in the Stritch Annual Fund Drive under the direction of Joan Regner and Mary Van Beck, co-chairpersons. With the assistance of Sr. Justine Peter, alumni coordinator, the mailing list of Associate, Bachelor, and Master of Arts graduates was divided into groups according to academic majors. In addition to a general covering letter, special progress reports were prepared by all major departments for the information of their respective alumni. It is hoped that this approach - based upon " special interests" - will accomplish two major purposes : (a) give alumni updated information about program developments on campus of particular importance to them, and (b) generate increased concern over financial support for the College. The results of this Alumni Association campaign will be published in the next issue of Stritch '76. Southern Methodist, Mount Mary College, UW-Stevens Point, and Mundelein College. In Sister Agnes Clare's words: " From the standpoint of the new concern over 'consumer interests,' our record of career counseling and job placement at Stritch is both quite enviable and most encouraging during these challenging times." Financial Aid Officers Hold Conference Here The Wisconsin Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators sponsored a workshop at Stritch on Tues., March 23. Nearly 50 secondary school guidance counselors attended the day-long program to learn about Basic Educational Opportunity Grants. Sr. Laurene Frederick, financial aid officer at esc, coordinated the arrangements on campus. Official Notice The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 gives students the right to inspect official college records directly relating to them; the opportunity to challenge any allegedly "inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise inappropriate" data maintained on them by the college; and, in most cases, prohibits the college from releasing such records without the student's consent. Career Office Holds Series of Workshops The Office of Career and Placement Services has provided workshops for Stritch students who will be graduating from the College's two-year and fouryear academic programs this spring. A " Job Search Sem inar" for education students featured exercises in selfevaluation and awareness, a talk on interviewing techniques by Mr. Ken Hitzke of the Milwaukee Public Schools, and an analysis of the current job market by a representative of the Wis. State Employment Services. " Time, Talent, and Tomorrow" was the title of a workshop for Associate of Arts students, conducted by Sr. Agnes Clare and Marianne Buenzli. Other Assistance Given Mr. Kirby Stanat, director of UW-M's Placement Office, offered a two-hour workshop on " Job-Hunting Tactics." A final workshop, scheduled later this semester, will be directed toward liberal arts students who are not enrolled in teacher education. 7
