2 2010 SEASON OUTLOOK Entering the fourth year of his tenure as head football coach at Alabama State University, former Hornet great Reggie Barlow believes his 2010 squad is primed and ready to help the program make the turn following a disappointing finish last year. ASU opened the 2009 campaign with three straight victories before collecting just one more over the remainder of the season. The Hornets were a competitive bunch throughout the season, especially on defense, but struggled with a lack of consistency on the offensive side of the ball. Last season was tough on us but I feel like the guys continued to fight all year and were able to learn even through the tough times, said Barlow. Our winter workouts were focused and intense and I thought we showed some quality improvements and growth during our spring practices. All of our returning players are committed to our plans and ready to move the ASU program forward. Bama State returns 45 letterwinners from last year s squad including six starters on offense and five on defense. Barlow and the Hornets welcome two new coordinators as former Grambling head coach Melvin Spears takes over the reins of the offense and former ASU standout Cedric Thornton moves up to the defensive coordinator role after working with the Hornet linebackers last season. The offense was a bit of a rollercoaster ride for Alabama State in The Hornets amassed more than 3,000 yards (3,180) of total offense and averaged 289 yards per game but had trouble consistently getting the ball into the endzone with just five games scoring more than 20 points. We hurt ourselves at times in the red zone last year, added Barlow. We did a great job of moving the ball down the field but just weren t able to push the ball across the goal line as much as we would have liked. That was a priority for us this spring and I feel like with our new scheme we have the style and personnel to really make things exciting for our fans. Spears, who has a long history of producing exciting, high octane offenses, brings what he s tabbed The Hornet Stretch to ASU with plans to capitalize on the Hornets offensive strengths while taking what the opponent defense is allowing. ASU s offensive success begins with a strong corps of wide receivers led by junior Nick Andrews, a second-team All-SWAC honoree, and senior Darius Mathis. The explosive duo accounted for nine of the team s 13 touchdown catches in 2009 and led the squad in receptions with Andrews finishing with 47 catches for 803 yards and Mathis snagging 36 for 398. Returnees Devin Dominguez, Landon Jones and T.C. McWilliams all earned valuable playing time on the outside while tight ends Louis Wright and Najee Leftwich also demonstrated the ability to make plays in the passing game. In addition, ASU s signing class included a handful of big, skilled receivers that will look to make an impact in the new offensive scheme. Fifth-year senior Anthony Speight returns as the most experienced quarterback candidate. Speight split time as the starter last year and looks to be a challenger for the position this fall. Redshirt freshmen Rashard Burkette and Holt Claiborne along with a pair of newcomers will also battle for the spot as the trigger man for the Bama State attack. Alabama State has to replace the solid production of Rahmod Traylor in the backfield, but a collection of running backs led by Tim Clark, Ronald Belser and Martavious Paulk appear ready to handle the responsibility. Sophomore Andrew Tate proved a big surprise for the Hornets last year becoming a starter at fullback as a true freshman. Additionally, Bama State signed a trio of talented newcomers on national signing day. The Hornets look to replace three starters on the offensive front and will depend on seniors Tim Moore and Bruce Beal to bolster the point of attack. At 6-7, 320-lbs, sophomore Terren Jones played as a freshman but really matured and improved during the spring and is expected to be a force in the front for ASU. In addition, Bama State brought in some mid-semester transfers including Kevin Bryant (6-7, 340) and Frantz Louis (6-3, 320) that will also provide immediate depth and strength to the line. With Thornton taking over the defensive playcalling, Alabama State looks to return to their familiar 4-3 style of attack. Graduation took the Hornets top three tacklers including first-team All- SWAC honorees Adrian Hardy (104 tackles) and Rechard Johnson (91). The defensive secondary provides ASU with its most experience and depth heading into the 2010 season. Junior Donovan Masline is a proven performer at cornerback while sophomores Kejuan Riley, Marcus Solomon and Saeed Lee all logged valuable minutes for the Hornets last year. Senior Jacolby Chatman was one of the team s top performers in the spring while junior Jamire Williams and Jacques Rickerson both provide ASU with players boasting BCS-level playing experience in the secondary. ASU linebackers lack a tremendous amount of defensive game experience but consist of some extremely talented players that have the core of the special team units the past few seasons. This group has paid its dues and is ready to rise to the challenge of leading the Bama State defensive attack. Senior Anthony Burney heads the group having played in every game with five starts in 2009 while a collection of sophomores including Maurice Tate, Leland Baker and Bryant Mosley provide the team with solid depth. Bama State s defensive front was thin during the spring having lost veterans Chris Preer, Noel Alphonso and Eugene Newbold to graduation. Junior Kynjee Cotton, one of the SWAC sack leaders last season with six, leads the list of key returners for the Hornets. Juniors Quin Bohannon and DreQuay Everett along with Jakari Wilcoxson and Sejean Hart will all be counted on to step up and provide ASU with a strong front. Several newcomers will also be looked upon to make an impact and provide depth. Our defense has been a strength for us the past few seasons, Barlow stated. I believe that will continue again in We plan to be a swarming, attacking bunch of Hornets with the intent of imposing our will on the offense. We are excited about the group of guys we have on that side of the ball. Junior Andrew Lyons returns as the team s placekicker and punter. Lyons connected on three of his four field goal attempts last season and drilled his only extra-point attempt. In addition, he averaged 34.1 yards per punt. Speight has also done some punting during his career at ASU. The key position of deep snapper on punts and kicks will again be filled by sophomore Chad Smith. Several members of ASU s talented signing class will also have the opportunity to make a name for themselves as kick returners and on special teams. The 2010 schedule for Alabama State includes a challenging nine-game slate of SWAC contests along with non-conference tilts with Savannah State and the annual Turkey Day Classic battle against Tuskegee. The Hornets open the season with backto-back home games against Mississippi Valley and Arkansas-Pine Bluff before playing two straight road games at Prairie View A&M and Alcorn. Texas Southern visits the Cramton Bowl at the start of October followed by a trip to Grambling. Following an open date, ASU hosts Savannah before trekking to Birmingham for the Magic City Classic to face in-state rival Alabama A&M. A home game versus JSU and a trip to Southern close out the SWAC portion of the Bama State schedule. Our schedule again is challenging for our team, but exciting for our fans with six games to be played at Cramton Bowl. We are excited to open the year with two home games so that we can hopefully build some early momentum. It is also an honor and privilege to have the opportunity to play in 17

3 2010 COACHING STAFF As Reggie Barlow begins his fourth season as head football coach at Alabama State University, the Hornet program continues to build and mature towards its goal of returning ASU to glory on the gridiron.barlow renewed the energy and excitement of the Bama State program in his first seasons. He continued laying a winning foundation during the next two seasons by establishing a style of play for his teams on both sides of the ball while also assembling a staff that believed in his plan and could recruit the student-athletes needed to carry out the plan. As long as I am the head coach here, we will live by the mantra that our best ability is accountability, Barlow said. We will be accountable to ourselves as students and through a strong understanding of our own character. We will be accountable to our teammates and coaches by doing the little things like being on time, learning our position responsibilities, attending study hall and making all of our weight room sessions. We will also be responsible to our community by doing our best to positively influence our area s young people. We are much more than football players, we will be student-athletes. COACHING STAFF: REGGIE BARLOW Head Coach A former ASU and NFL star, Barlow an often-requested motivational speaker at schools - models the behavior he expects from those associated with his Bama State program. In 1999, Barlow then at the height of his NFL career - was featured in a New York Times article on professional athletes earning a college degree. During the interview, he said that graduating from college was his greatest achievement an attitude that was lauded by NFL s vice president of player and employee development. It was important to me, Barlow said. No matter how well I did during the season, my mom would continually ask me when I was going to finish my degree. She made me understand how important it was. Now it s my turn to do the same for my players and my community. Barlow s first season as ASU s head coach was filled with thrilling wins and close losses, providing a glimpse of the kind of excitement and effort he brings to the program.in 2007, the Hornets both won four straight games and suffered five consecutive losses. The season ended with the longest and highest scoring game in the history of the Turkey Day Classic. Though his team fell in three overtimes, Barlow was proud of the Hornets effort.the 2008 campaign included some tough losses but also featured a win over Mississippi Valley State in the SWAC opener and a thrilling final possession win over archrival Tuskegee in the Turkey Day Classic.Last season, ASU again opened the season with a bang winning its first three contests before dropping a trio of tough match-ups. The Hornets snapped their losing streak with a win over Alcorn State but struggled down the stretch falling to rivals Alabama A&M and Tuskegee. A record-breaking receiver and kick returner, Barlow was recruited to ASU by the legendary Houston Markham. During his senior year, Barlow caught 58 passes for 1,267 yards. The Montgomery native and Sidney Lanier High School standout finished his Hornet career with 133 catches and 2,536 yards. The NFL took notice and Barlow was selected in the fourth round of the 1996 NFL draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. It was the kickoff to a successful professional career. To this day, Barlow s name is still etched on several of the teams records. In 1998, Barlow led the NFL in punt return yardage, with 43 returns for 555 yards and a touchdown and was named a Pro Bowl alternate. He still owns the Jaguars career record for most punt returns (79), most punt return yards (967), and average per return (12.2), as well as single-season records for most punt returns (55 in 1998), most punt return yards (555 in 1998) and average per return (12.9) in 1998 After five years in Jacksonville, Barlow joined the Oakland Raiders. In 2002, Barlow began his two year tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he would soon earn a Super Bowl Ring. Even at the height of his success, the idea of coaching was never far from Barlow s mind. Throughout his career, he collected tips, ideas and habits of his coaches, going so far as to record them in a notebook.he would put that information and experience to good use when he joined the ASU football staff as quarterbacks coach in In his first season, Barlow served as mentor and tutor to future NFL second-round draftee Tarvaris Jackson currently the starting quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings. In 2006, Barlow worked with a trio of quarterbacks without a single snap of college football experience between them. Under Barlow s tutelage, Alex Engram would earn a SWAC Newcomer of the Week award and finish eighth in the conference in total offense.after that season, Barlow was named interim head coach. Just a few weeks later, the interim title was removed and Barlow s dream was realized. I love ASU, Barlow said. They have been so good to me and my family. This is my dream job. Barlow is married to the former Tracy Kidd and he is the father of three children, Erica, Reggie Jr. and Simone. assistant head coach/wide receivers: defensive coordinator/linebackers: offensive coordinator: quarterbacks: offensive line/video coordinator: running backs: defensive line: defensive backs: special teams coordinator: Roger Totten Cedric Thornton Melvin Spears Richard Moncrief Antonio Bradford Vyron Brown Tyrone Rogers Dick Brooks Gregory Green 18
