1 Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America 2013 Report to the Community Corporate and employee giving and volunteerism Community involvement is more than just our responsibility as a good corporate citizen it s a way of life that s part of the fabric of our culture. Walter White, Allianz president and CEO At Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America (Allianz), we believe in supporting the crucial work of nonprofit organizations in the communities where we live and work. But our Corporate Giving Program encompasses more than financial donations. Our employees go above and beyond in their passion for volunteering and dedication to charitable giving. In 2013, nearly 900 Allianz employees volunteered 13,000 hours helping to make a difference in the lives of others. Together with our grants and employee donations, our community impact totaled $1.9 million once again exceeding our previous year s amount. And we look forward to continuing our commitment in the year ahead. IN THIS REPORT: Corporate-sponsored initiatives Spirit of Giving...2 Driving to Donate...2 Corporate grants...3 Legacy Scholarship Program...4 Employee-driven initiatives Employee-Elected Charities...5 Employee volunteer programs...5 Volunteer of the Quarter Award...6 V-8 program...6 Deepening our financial literacy focus Junior Achievement...7 BestPrep partnerships...7 IN 2013 WE GAVE $1.9 MILLION TO THE COMMUNITY THROUGH GRANTS, VOLUNTEERING, AND CHARITABLE DONATIONS. 2 Corporate-sponsored initiatives Driving to Donate Golf Tournament This year, our annual Driving to Donate Charity Golf Tournament raised more than $179,000 surpassing last year s record total of $159,000. Nearly 300 Allianz employees and vendor partners participated via the golf outing, donations, raffle ticket sales, and an online auction. Proceeds from this year s tournament were dedicated to the Helpline of the Alzheimer s Association MN-ND, a nonprofit serving families, health care providers, and individuals affected by Alzheimer s disease and dementia. THE #1 CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT in net revenue as a percentage of gross revenue (Minneapolis/ St. Paul Business Journal, Top 25 List, Charity Golf Tournaments, April 5, 2013) Spirit of Giving 26,857 lbs. OF FOOD 21,849 lbs. OF CLOTHES 3,584 TOYS $28,100 FOR TOYS FOR TOTS $13,279 FOR PRISM $61,915 FOR SECOND HARVEST Along with supporting important causes, the Allianz Spirit of Giving campaign seeks to raise employee awareness of the simple ways each of us can reach out and positively impact the lives of others in our community. That s why we encourage all of our employees to participate in our annual food, clothing, toy, and fundraising drive to benefit these nonprofit organizations: Second Harvest Heartland, the Upper Midwest s largest hunger relief organization, working to reinvent hunger relief through leadership and innovation PRISM (People Responding In Social Ministry), a social service agency based in Golden Valley, Minnesota, that helps local families during times of financial hardship Toys for Tots Foundation, whose mission is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less-fortunate children This year, we held donation drives in both summer and the holiday season together, these efforts raised 26,857 lbs. of food; 21,849 lbs. of clothes; more than 3,500 toys; and more than $103,000 in cash donations. On the delivery day in early December, it s a company tradition for hundreds of Allianz employees to form a human chain to pass the hundreds of boxes of donations from our building into the delivery trucks. 2 Page 2 of 8
3 Corporate grants Our Corporate Grantmaking Program supports local organizations that improve financial literacy or promote the independence and self-sufficiency of senior citizens in the Twin Cities area. Grants typically range from $15,000 to $20,000. In 2013, we distributed a total of $550,000 in these focus areas: Senior services Qualifying organizations must illustrate how their program helps seniors be selfsufficient (specifically food, transportation, adaptive living, and basic living needs); and/or enhance the quality of life of seniors through community programming and/or community outreach (specifically social vitality through social activity and interaction). $580,000 IN GRANTS $275,000 FOR SENIOR SERVICES $275,000 FOR FINANCIAL LITERACY In 2013, we distributed $275,000 to these grant recipients: Amherst H. Project for Pride in Living (PPL) Twin Cities RISE! WomenVenture YouthCare Legacy Scholarship Program $30,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS 10 DESERVING STUDENTS The Allianz Legacy Scholarship Program was inspired by Rosie Wineland, an exemplary Allianz employee who passed away in 1990 after battling cancer. In her honor, each year Allianz presents $30,000 in scholarships to students who are family members of our employees and who we believe reflect our company s core values of caring and service to others. These scholarships will help pay for the postsecondary educations of 10 deserving students. Those who receive these scholarships are chosen based on academic performance and community service participation in areas such as social welfare and education. 5 These employees chose Feed My Starving Children for their Make a Difference project, packaging food for shipping overseas. Employee-driven initiatives Employee-Elected Charities Each year, our employees vote for four organizations they would like Allianz to support at a greater level with volunteer hours and $25,000 in financial support and inkind donations. Organizations must be those in which 10 or more employees have volunteered during the calendar year. We re proud to have contributed time and money to these employee-elected nonprofits: The American Cancer Society, dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem through research, education, advocacy, and service The Animal Humane Society, providing programs and services to compassionately serve all of the stages of an animal s life Employee volunteer programs Make a Difference volunteer projects We encourage our employees to volunteer with the charitable organizations for which they care deeply. Working in groups of five or more, they help with hands-on work, fundraising walks or runs, and other activities. Allianz backs up their commitment with financial support to the organization or event in the amount of $100 per participating employee and there s no limit on the number of activities in which employees can participate. In 2013, more than 1,000 employees took advantage of this program and personally made a difference. Thanks to their dedication, we distributed $143,400 to their choices of nonprofit organizations. Down Syndrome Association of Minnesota, providing information and support to people with Down syndrome, their families, and their communities HopeKids, organizing events and activities that restore fun, excitement, and hope to children facing debilitating health issues $100 Per EMPLOYEE VOLUNTEER CONTRIBUTED $143,400 5 Page 5 of 8

7 Deepening our financial literacy focus Junior Achievement and BestPrep partnerships To make an even greater impact on increasing financial literacy and to deepen the connection our employees feel to this important cause, Allianz has made a special commitment to these two nonprofit educational organizations: Junior Achievement, dedicated to empowering young people with kindergarten-12 th grade programs that foster work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy skills through hands-on programs BestPrep, whose mission is to help Minnesota students build business, career, and financial literacy skills, through experiences that can inspire success in work and life Along with providing each of these organizations $100,000 in corporate grants, more than 500 Allianz employees volunteered their time and talents in many BestPrep and Junior Achievement programs. Now in our fourth year of partnership, our employees continue to get excited about working with students and love the feeling of helping make a positive impact in their lives. It s our biggest volunteer effort of the year, with more than 500 employees happily joining in. During the school year, our employees participated in numerous educational events with students, including JA in a Day, ementors/job Shadow, The Stock Market Game, and mock job interviews. Through our ementors program with BestPrep and Junior Achievement, we help students build financial and career skills. Contributing business skills to nonprofit organizations Through our Social OPEX program, Allianz provides the opportunity for our employees to bring the skills honed in our Operational Excellence program to the business challenges of a selected nonprofit organization. This year, Mike Haddad and Tassie Blackstone worked with BestPrep to put in place processes to help facilitate their ementors program management. Working with BestPrep, they helped assess the existing process, designed a new interim process, and identified opportunities to automate the process. Bob Kaitz, president and CEO of BestPrep, sums it up this way: It was transformational. $100,000 TO JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT 507 EMPLOYEE VOLUNTEERS $100,000 TO BESTPREP To learn more about Allianz Corporate Giving Programs and application procedures, please laura.juergens@allianzlife.com, or visit 7 Page 7 of 8
