1 The Terri Union and Carlos Zukowski Endowment for the Arts 2015 Guideline and Application Form WHAT IS CUMBERLAND COMMUNITY FOUNDATION? Cumberland Community Foundation is a nonprofit (501(c)(3)) charitable foundation established in 1980 by Dr. Lucile Hutaff with a gift of $576,840. Today, Cumberland Community Foundation s assets exceed $72 million in more than 450 grantmaking funds. Many of these grantmaking funds support specific charitable causes chosen by the donors who establish them; ranging from scholarships to designated charities to very specific charitable programs. What is The Terri Union and Carlos Zukowski Endowment for the Arts ( The Fund )? This Fund is a field-of-interest endowment created by Terri Union and her husband, the late Carlos Zukowski, to support the arts in Cumberland County, North Carolina - forever. Final grant decisions are made at the discretion of the Foundation. Excerpts from the endowment fund agreement: Charitable Purpose The Charitable Purpose of the Fund shall be to raise the cultural awareness of the greater Fayetteville, NC community by supporting programs and projects that enhance the arts, as we recognize the important connection between the ARTS and the well-being of our community. Scope / Eligibility The primary focus of the fund is to more deeply engage people of all ages and all economic circumstances in the performing arts and visual arts and to improve their lives through greater access and personal experiences. The fund will not award support for: Partial sponsorships of standing exhibits, on-going events, or regular season performances of an existing arts organization (Note: Special productions are not excluded, especially if they involve attracting new audiences or engaging nontraditional performers.) The regular annual programming of existing arts organizations General operating support for annual expenses of existing arts organizations ELIGIBILITY Cumberland Community Foundation welcomes grant requests from nonprofit organizations that are: Located in and provide services to Cumberland County; and Page 1 of 5
2 Classified as a traditional public charitable organizations in IRS Subsection 501(c)(3), Section 509(a)(1); or Qualified government agencies. o If the organization is operating under a different IRS section, that must be indicated on the application. APPLICATION GUIDELINES The following guidelines apply: Grant amount and type: Nonprofit organizations may apply for program and capacity building grants of up to $7,500. We are not accepting requests to support capital projects at this time. Multiple submissions: Only one proposal from an organization may be submitted in a particular grant cycle. Multi-year grants: This fund does not award multi-year grants. Past recipients may apply and will be evaluated based on previous grant performance. School system: Requests from Cumberland County Schools must come from CCS s grants office and be approved and signed by the superintendent. Any program that serves an individual school must be a pilot project that, if successful, would be duplicated in other similar schools in the system. Multi-department/branch grantees: Large organizations with many branches or departments (e.g. colleges, universities, libraries) must submit requests from the office of the president/chancellor. Deadlines: The Grant Application & Data Form must be received by 5:00 p.m. on August 21, Organizations/projects may be invited to submit additional details. Applications will not be accepted if they are incomplete or submitted with bindings, paper clips, or staples. RESTRICTIONS No grants are made from Community Funds to or for: Individuals National fundraising drives Tickets for benefits or fundraising events Political organizations or candidates for public office Lobbying activities Endowment funds (see the Lilly Endowment Challenge program) Scholarships for individuals (see Scholarship Program) Budget deficits / failure to raise adequate annual operating support Membership dues Religious organizations for religious purposes (Community Grants do not support programs/projects with religious content or purpose or buildings owned by religious organizations) * *Note: Donors frequently support these religious causes and others listed above with their Donor Advised Funds and Designated Funds. This grant restriction applies only to Community Funds (Unrestricted and Field of Interest Endowments). GRANT REQUIREMENTS Each successful applicant will be required to sign a grant agreement with Cumberland Community Foundation before receiving a grant payment. The grant agreement is a contract outlining the terms of the funding. Failure to comply with the terms of the agreement will require Page 2 of 5
3 repayment of all or part of the grant award. Grantees must also present reports every six months until grant funding is completely expended. Follow-up visits by Cumberland Community Foundation may also be made as part of on-going assessment of the impact of grantmaking. Grantees must provide photos with captions for use in the Foundation s newsletters, website, and donor reports, except when client privacy prohibits photos. LOBBYING THE BOARD Lobbying addressed directly to a Foundation board member, staff, or committee member is considered inappropriate. Cumberland Community Foundation s board, staff, and volunteers have all signed Conflict of Interest statements and are committed to upholding the highest standards in this area.
