1 PROJECT in a box version 2.4 Server Install guide Install Guide V9 ( ) Introduction This guide will take you step by step through the process of installing your PROJECT in a box Server and introduce you to the set up required for operational roll out. PROJECT in a box is a.net web services application running on SQL and the installer in default mode provides and sets up a local server with the web server, database and file store all on the local computer. A single user client is also installed locally to facilitate administration. This means it can be used to provide a fully functioning standalone system or can be combined with other Servers and or clients to create a larger integrated system. The most common operation of this installer is to set up a single server with all elements on the same computer and the Typical mode of the installer is arranged to provide such a vanilla installation. This guide has therefore been prepared for users who are to install the vanilla Professional Edition server. The Guide has been prepared to help a non IT specialist to successfully install and configure the system. This in mind there is plenty of help and description provided. The default installation takes only a few minutes assuming the prerequisites are already in place. The Guide has been prepared on a Server 2003 operating system. The Pro installer can also be user (in Custom mode) to set up a split server configuration although this is not explicitly covered by the guide. 2 1 Permission to install on your host computer To operate the PROJECT in a box Server requires the following items on your chosen host computer. Some (items 1) may already be in place as part of your operating system or from previous software installs (item 2), others will be installed as part of the process to follow: 1. The Microsoft.NET framework version 2.0 or newer 2. A version of Microsoft SQL 2000 or 2005 (Express Edition or MSDE can be used if required) 3. The PROJECT in a box Client software 4. The PROJECT in a box Server Tool You will need full Local Administration rights over your computer to be able to install and configure the items required. If you are unsure about this contact your IT System Administrator. Once you are logged into the host computer with administration rights you can run the installation software titled piabpe-server exe. 2 Approach to Installation This Server Installer has been configured to support the simple installation of a Vanilla Server with every thing installed on the same computer. This install guide therefore supports the use of this typical installation profile and assumes the user will be able to agree with all the options presented during the installation process. If the user decides to undertake a custom installation or declines some of the presented elements of the typical installation profile then the user may need to refer to further documentation (included in the installer as a help file) or contact the PROJECT in a box help desk at support@projectinabox.org.uk. 3 Installing Professional Edition Server Before starting the install process ensure that Norton or any other anti virus software is switched off at these will frequently prevent installation or configuration of essential components. When you run the install software you will need to read the notes on the first screen and then accept the terms and conditions on the second screen. The third screen then asks you to select an installation type (profile), as shown below. Page 2 of 8

3 We strongly recommend you select typical then click Next to proceed. If you are using the Custom install approach then we recommend you open the Technical guide (Help file) using the link here to support your installation. 3.1 Installing prerequisites The installer automatically checks your computer to ensure all the prerequisites are available and provides a summary as shown below. If any prerequisites are shown as NOT FOUND please install them now before continuing. You can now press Install to continue. Page 3 of 8

4 The Installer will then progress with installing the relevant template and example files (as shown here), And also start run and close a series of command shell windows (example shown here). During the process a number of new icons will have or may have been added to your desktop: PROJECT in a box Server (New) PROJECT in a box Client (New) When the installation process is complete you will see the installer look as below. 5 You can now press Close and progress to setting up your software for operation. 4 Setting up for Operation You will now need to set up your software for operation. 4.1 Licensing your Software Since version 2.0 all licensing of users and client interfaces is managed from the server. The Server installer is shipped with a temporary Licence Key which allows just the admin user to log in, (Admin, admin) as explained in section 4.2 below, for a period while the system is prepared for roll out. To add the licence volumes that you have purchased to your server, go to the Server tool (grey cog icon on desktop) and under File > Licence you will find the licence key showing the status (number of users of each type and expiry date of your current licence key). The recommended route for licensing your software is to use the Licence directly via the internet link which opens the Licence key form shown over the page. Type in here your Customer ID and Password (as provided in your confirmation ) then press Request licence. The Licence key client will then go out over the internet to the PROJECT in a box website, register your install for you to create a licence key and then apply it to your local software. By default this key will add the total number of Manager, Team and Enterprise Hub licensed users you have purchased. Page 5 of 8

6 You can only create this key once for your server if you have made a mistake please contact support@projectinabox.org.uk to discuss how to resolve. 4.2 Accessing your PROJECT in a box local.net Client Even with just your temporary Licence key in place you will be able to access your server by opening the.net client interface using the desktop shortcut (Red box logo) provided and logging in as User: Admin with password: admin as shown below: Page 6 of 8

7 4.3 Preparing and Distributing the.net Client to users Install Guide V9 ( ) The.NET clients are xcopy applications and can be packaged for distribution and use in a whole range of ways. The Server supports three standard approaches to use: 1. Long term installation 2. Single use deployment 3. Portable deployment The Technical Guide (accessed from the help menu on the server tool) has full instructions on how you can customise these clients with different file storage locations or branding options before using the automated Build process to package them for end user access. The end result of this is the creation of a deployment site which as by default hosted on your server which users can access over your intranet to deploy the clients in the way most convenient for themselves. The standard deploy location is included in the Enterprise Hub as below and can be accessed at or IP address]/piabws/resources.aspx. 4.4 Other set up considerations There are extensive customisations you can undertake on PROJECT in a box to personalise your deployment and these are all covered in the technical Guide (accessed via the Server Tool, Help menu).
