1 SECTION 1: ACADEMIC BOARD COURSE PROPOSAL PART 1: OVERVIEW OF PROPOSAL Faculty: Science Department/School presenting the proposal: School of Molecular & Microbial Biosciences Faculty Contact person: Margaret Allman-Farinelli Academic Proponent Assoc Professor Margaret Allman-Farinelli Date course approved by Faculty: February Type of proposal: New Type of course: Other (provide details) X Combined degree of existing undergraduate (BSc) with postgraduate (MNutrDiet) Name of award course(s) Name of new award course/s: Bachelor of Science/Master of Nutrition and Dietetics Abbreviated name BSc MNutrDiet 2 separate testamurs of already existing courses Date of introduction or deletion Introduced: Year 2010 Semester One Availability to students Commonwealth supported students Fee-paying local students Full-time Part-time Full-time Part-time Fee-paying international students Full-time Part-time NOTE: The Bachelor of Science option can be completed on a part-time basis by CSP students but the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics is available full time only. 2 SECTION 1 : ACADEMIC BOARD COURSE PROPOSAL PART 2: DETAILS FOR ASSESSMENT OF PROPOSAL Purpose of the proposal The purpose of this proposal is to combine entry into two existing degrees, that is the Bachelor of Science with the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics. The purpose of the new combination is to offer students of exceptional academic ability certainty of entry to the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics with a Commonwealth Supported place or for talented international fee paying students. The existing Bachelor of Science (Nutrition) degree is to be deleted (separate course proposal template submitted) Justification for proposal The University of Sydney has run the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics degree since 1990 which was an upgrade of the Diploma of Nutrition and Dietetics offered since This course has fulfilled the requirements for professional accreditation by the Dietitians Association of Australia. Undergraduate training in nutrition and dietetics was first introduced in 1999 when the Federal government withdrew HECs support from postgraduate coursework degrees. The current Bachelor degree (BSc(Nutr) with Honours) no longer fits within the guidelines for honours degrees and changes to curriculum that have been set by the professional accrediting body, the Dietitians Association of Australia, cannot be accommodated. It is necessary for the University of Sydney to move all training for the profession of dietetics to Masters level teaching. The teaching techniques, professional placement and research components necessary to meet professional accreditation standards can no longer be accommodated in the existing undergraduate degree. This combination also seems to support the philosophy of the University of Sydney that adjectival degrees be removed from undergraduate studies and professional degrees follow on at postgraduate level. The existing Master of Nutrition and Dietetics is currently accredited by the professional body and does not require a new submission until The desire to combine the BSc with MNutrDiet degrees for the top 10 local students (likely UAI >97) is to provide certainty to the best students that they may continue to the MNutrDiet and to reward them with a commonwealth supported place. The School of Molecular and Microbial Biosciences wants to retain top students. These students will have the best potential for later postgraduate research degrees. There is also high demand for the nutrition and dietetic training programs from international students. Good students may fail to gain a place in the MNutrDiet because they have not met the necessary prerequisites required by the professional accrediting body (DAA). The combined packaging of degrees would prevent this problem Benchmarking, market research and analysis Benchmarking: No other University in Australia is currently offering the combination of Bachelor of Science with assured entry to Master of Nutrition and Dietetics to school leavers. We are aware that University of Wollongong and University of Canberra (the geographically closest Master of Nutrition and Dietetics alternatives) already offer commonwealth supported places Market research and analysis: This is a new packaging of two degrees that already exists i.e The bachelor of Science and Master of Nutrition and Dietetics. This very popular MNutrDiet degree has around 200 applications received annually eg in 2008, 82 local applicants and 110 international applicants. The option of this proposed combined degree is to enable the option of a direct pathway into a dietetics training course from school. With the deletion of the BSc(Nutrition) we aim to provide an alternate pathway. The BSc(Nutr) has enrolled around 50 students annually including 15 international students so the demand for the 10 CSP and 10 international places is already established.

3 In addition, the National research priorities include many of the areas of study for nutrition and dietetics in particular, promoting and maintaining good health and promoting good health and well being for all Australians especially. 1. A healthy start to life. 2. Ageing well, ageing productively. 3. Preventive healthcare. The Bachelor of Science/Master of Nutrition and Dietetics also pertains to the research priority of an environmentally sustainable Australia Summary table of competitive offerings to proposed award course: There are other Masters courses on offer but they all have postgraduate entry. Those offered are listed below. Institute Competitive offering Additional information University of Wollongong Master of Science Main competitor. (Nutrition and Dietetics) 2 year degree Master of Science (CSP offered). (Dietetics and Exercise No combined entry Rehabilitation) from school. Griffith University Master of Nutrition and Dietetics 2 year degree. No combined entry. CSP places offered. University of Queensland Master of Dietetic Studies Large number of prerequisites would exclude external applicants Deakin University Master of Dietetics Large number of prerequisites would preclude external Flinders University University of Canberra Master of Nutrition and Dietetics Master of Nutrition and Dietetics applicants 2 year degree. No combined entry from school. 2 year degree. No combined school entry. CSP places Estimated student demand It should be noted this is only for the combined degrees and there will be continued intake into the Masters course from the already established local and international streams. 4 Students Estimated number of Full-time students Estimated number of Part-time students Impact on students currently enrolled: The students currently enrolled in the BSc (Nutrition) with Honours would complete their 4 year degree as it currently exists. The last student intake will be 2009 with final completion in Students completing NUTR2911 and NUTR2912 in 2009 and those entering the BSc (Nutrition) in 2009 could be offered the option to exit at BSc and apply for entry to the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics using the current mechanism (full fee paying option). However, the cohort enrolling in the new combined BSc/MNutrDiet will not require their CSP places in the Masters until 2013 so the available CSP places in 2010 until 2012 could be offered to these BSc(Nutrition) students on a competitive basis. Enrolment Quotas: Will quotas be set for the proposed award course or for any units of study within the award course? Quotas will be set for the overall intake into the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics. Initially the intake for the proposed combined degree into the Masters will be set at 20 in The overall intake into the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics in 2013 when the combined degree BSc/MNutrDiet students enter would be 80 including both local and fee paying.
