Additional prerequisites exist for specific IMS V11 functions. Planned availability date January 16, 2009, is the IMS V11 (5635-A02) Quality Partnership Program (QPP) start date. IBM plans to ship IMS V11 to customers already selected as participants in the QPP process. General availability of IMS V11 will be announced at a later date. Description Integrated/open access with new application development/connectivity IMS Open Database support enhances the distributed access to IMS data and the availability of IMS. This support extends the IMS Connect function as a gateway to IMS data, adding to earlier support for IMS applications and operations. This support provides a standards-based (J2EE, as well as JDBC) direct interface to IMS data from TCP/IP-enabled Windows, Linux for System z, and z/os platforms. Access is provided with an IMS Universal DB Resource Adapter for J2EE runtime environments (for example, WebSphere Application Server) as well as an IMS Universal JDBC driver and IMS Universal DLI driver for non-j2ee environments. It includes a new Common Service Layer address space for managing the connections through the IMS Open Database Access (ODBA) interface to IMS data. This allows an application to access an IMS DB across LPAR boundaries rather than requiring that the application be in the same LPAR as the IMS DB. The use of the new address space can reduce U113 abends in this environment. This support provides a scalable distributed data access solution, using a standards-based application framework, providing connection pooling, security authentication in IMS Connect, and security authorization in ODBA. IMS Connect enhancements are the ultimate, optimized TCP/IP connectivity interface to IMS. These enhancements improve reliability, systems management, usability, serviceability, and the client connection process. They increase flexibility and improve diagnostics, error checking, and user-defined messages. They include configuration member support, enhanced commands, improved availability with a new recorder trace facility, new/modified messages, and new event records for the HWSTECLO exit. IMS Connect enhancements provide greater availability through fewer required restarts and reduced operator intervention. They allow customers to tailor KeepAlive processing by setting appropriate time values per port. This can clean up broken sessions in a more timely manner, eliminate Recorder Dataset full condition, and relieve operator interaction in re-establishing connections to TCP/IP after a session failure. 3 Enforcement of the single SSL port restriction prevents errors when using multiple SSL ports. This improves IMS Connect reliability when processing SSL client connections. The User Message exit return without socket disconnect supports send back in the user message exit without termination and maintains socket connections for user message send back type flows, removing the burden of the client having to re-establish the connection. Super Member on Datastore adds granularity to allow customers to choose which datastore instance within each IMS Connect is included for each Super Member. This eliminates the restriction that all defined data stores are part of the same Super Member group. Message content enhancements identify a bad storage address to HWSP1410W, when it fails to release storage, to better expedite diagnostics. TCP/IP KeepAlive support is provided at the port level. The Port Message Edit Exit provides an exit to edit message between TCP/IP and IMS Connect. VIEWHWS provides summary-level output and adds Datastore to the client display. Generated Client ID support for the IMS Transaction Manager Resource Adapter generates the HWSxx client ID if none is provided or if a duplicate is encountered. This avoids duplicate client errors when running many instances of the WebSphere Application Server with the Transaction Manager Resource Adapter due to duplicate client IDs generated by the IMS Transaction Manager Resource Adapter. This function was previously provided for IMS SOAP Gateway and clients who develop their own solution. Recorder Trace is incorporated into the Base Primitive Environment (BPE) Trace. This improves the availability of this trace, avoiding data loss due to dataset full conditions, and provides more flexibility in defining, managing, and maintaining the trace dataset with little or no additional effort. TCP/IP Auto Reconnect provides automatic reconnection when TCP/IP is cycled. MAXSOC improvements include maintaining port-level socket count and overall socket count, issuing warning messages when the socket warning level is reached, and displaying current socket count on the VIEWHWS command output. Commit Mode 0 (CM0) ACK Timeout allows Timeout Queue name at the Open Transaction Manager Access (OTMA) connection time. Support is also provided to extend the OTMA timeout function to cover the CM0 output messages so the TPIPE won't be left in the hang condition. This avoids issuing an IMS command to get out of the TPIPE hang condition caused by a missing timeout. This strengthens resiliency. Previously, if TPIPE sent a committhen-send output and the client did not send an acknowledgement, the TPIPE could hang and cause many subsequent messages to be queued to the TPIPE. IMS Transaction Manager Resource Adapter Message Format Services (MFS) Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) support for WebSphere Integration Developer assists integration developers and advanced J2EE developers with business-to-business transformation. This support creates Web services/ejb/jsps out of existing MFS-based IMS applications and provides support for Service Component Architecture (SCA), Enterprise Metadata Discovery (EMD) 1.1, and BPEL. It includes a GUI wizard that allows a user to parse the MFS source files and generate the service definition and artifacts. The generated application can be deployed to run on WebSphere Process Server for business orchestration and choreography. Sysplex Manager Affinity routing enhancements for the Transaction Manager and MSC Message Routing and Control User exit routine (DFSMSCE0) increase the capability and usability of DFSMSCE0 affinity support by: Allowing the DFSMSCE0 user exit to route APPC/OTMA synchronous messages to a backend IMS when the Resource Recovery Service (RRS) or the APPC/OTMA Shared Queues support (AOS) are not active. This resolves the APPC/OTMA affinity restriction for some customers. Increasing IMSID affinity field in DFSMSCEP user parameter list from four to eight bytes to support XRF. Adding a new status display value to QUERY TRAN to display if the transaction is registered for affinity (status=lclaffin). This makes affinity routing easier to manage. Increasing DFSMSCEB and DFSMSCEP control block size to provide more room for service and future enhancements to the DFSMSCE0 user exit. 4 Additional IMS V11 integration enhancements also being provided through the IMS V10 service process: Synchronous Callout for IMS Transaction Manager Resource Adapter and IMS SOAP Gateway manages the correlation of a callout request. This enables IMS applications to invoke external applications and synchronously receive a response in the same IMS transaction instance. External applications and servers include J2EE Application (EJB/MDB) or Web services providers in WebSphere Application Server, Web services providers (for example, Microsoft.Net), and other client applications (for example, SAP). This enhances the current callout capability, allowing IMS applications to wait for a response in the same IMS transaction instance, which enhances integration of IMS with other servers and applications. This support also includes OTMA Destination Routing Descriptor support, which externalizes the routing definitions and specifications for callout messages without IMS user exits and is read/initialized at IMS startup, a new SYNTIMER keyword for synchronous callout to specify the timeout value, and enhanced commands for /DIS active (which indicates that the region is waiting for a sync callout response), /PSTOP (which clears the wait), /DIS TMEMBER TPIPE (which indicates that TPIPE is waiting for ACK or response of a sync callout message), and / STOP TMEMBER TPIPE (to clear the wait). IMS Transaction Manager Resource Adapter enhancements: WebSphere Transformation Extender (WTX) support invokes IMS transactions while leveraging standards-based transaction support on distributed platforms of complex data formats and unique industry requirements such as SEPA (XML format requirement for European banks), X-12, EDIFACT (cross industry), HIPAA (health care), HL7, SWIFT (financial services), and NCPDP. This support provides faster standards compliance and improved data quality with automated data validation using industry and regulatory standards. IMS Transaction Manager Resource Adapter Socket Reconnect support provides a retry/ reconnect capability to re-establish a connection when encountering communications failures in sending/receiving a request/response through Connect from WebSphere Application Server, without user intervention. This retry function is implemented for Sync Level Confirm interactions to avoid duplicate interactions. During system maintenance previously, customers would recycle IMS Connect, which caused WebSphere Application Server applications to fail due to persistent connections and connection pooling. This solution avoids unnecessary errors and quickly re-establishes connections, thus enhancing IMS availability and operational characteristics to allow these applications to seamlessly recover from connection errors. IMS Transaction Manager Resource Adapter Send Only Reroute support reroutes current Sync-Send (Send-Only) interactions for CM0. With the reroute flag set to True and the reroute TPIPE name specified, any IOPCB output message resulting from the Send-Only transaction is queued to the reroute TPIPE. IMS Transaction Manager Resource Adapter JCA 1.5 inbound support provides standardsbased support for message-driven beans through the JCA 1.5 message inflow contract for pulling asynchronous output and callout messages from IMS transactions. It also provides concurrency by leveraging the work management support in WebSphere Application Server. IMS Connect Client API simplifies design, development, and test of IMS access for client TCP/ IP applications. This provides an extensive set of profiles that define the types of interactions to be performed and high- and low-level methods for performing these interactions. This simple API allows interaction while shielding the complexities of protocols, provides the IMS Request Message header, and allows socket programming. Using reusable profiles, it provides a simple way to describe TCP/IP socket connections, interaction protocols, message headers, and data. For more direct control, more granular lower-level calls are provided. Java, C, Windows, and z/os environments are supported. The IMS Connect Cancel Client ID option provides a new instance of the client ID and terminates any previous one while staying connected. Previously the old session might not have been cleaned up for a period of time, preventing the client from re-establishing a session where they could get disconnected and be unable to reconnect due to "duplicate clientid." Cancel Client support allows the client to specify on the connection request that IMS Connect is to clean up any existing (stale) instances for this clientid. This can improve IMS availability and performance. IMS Connect Clientid Hash Table support provides more efficient processing for response messages through Connect from OTMA. It uses direct access through the hash table rather IBM Europe Software Announcement ZP IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 4

5 than a chained search through all client (socket) control blocks. With a chained search for a large numbers of clients (sockets), each reply required many instructions to chain through the control blocks. The new hash table support eliminates this processing, greatly reducing the instructions required to find the client session for replies from OTMA and the instructions required for messages. This reduces CPU consumption, particularly for customers with large numbers of concurrent client sockets, improves performance, and decreases elapsed time, depending on the CPU constraints of the system. IMS Connect expansion of the Exit Interface Block Data Store entry provides OTMA server availability information to the IMS Connect user exit or vendor application. The IMS Connect display commands (VIEWHWS, VIEWDS, QUERY MEMBER, and QUERY DATASTORE) are also updated to show the OTMA availability state of the target IMS as reported by OTMA on the Target Member output line. A new event record in IMS Connect records OTMA availability information, based on the OTMA protocol message that identifies whether the OTMA resources are in a severe, warning, or normal condition. Transaction Expiration support terminates transactions from OTMA based on the expiration time specified in the TRANSACT macro or the OTMA message prefix. This reduces processing costs and CPU cycles for the unwanted transactions. An IMS Connect IRL flag is provided for passing the transaction expiration time in the OTMA message prefix. IMS Connect and OTMA Retrieve ALT-PCB output created at Shared Queues back-end enhancement extends existing super member function to support Resume TPIPE AUTO and SINGLE-WAIT requests, registers interest for super member TPIPE queue at the frontend IMS, and enhances IMS Connect to handle Resume TPIPE AUTO NAK. Without this support, ALT-PCB output messages generated at the Shared Queues back-end IMS cannot be retrieved by the front-end IMS with various options of the Resume TPIPE request. OTMA Monitoring support provides a client/server protocol to allow OTMA to monitor certain resources, determine the resource availability level of the resources, take server actions (if needed), and send a protocol message to the client. This message is processed by an OTMA client so the transaction can be redirected to another IMS. Previously, when OTMA did not have the resources to effectively process the work submitted by an OTMA client, such as IMS Connect or MQSeries, the client application was not always aware of the situation and continued sending work to IMS, potentially leading to flooded transactions and an IMS outage that disrupts all client applications. With this support, the high number of unprocessed OTMA XCF messages and OTMA input transactions can be detected and reported. The DFSMSCE0 Routing and Control user exit routine is enhanced to route transaction messages to a designated back-end IMS within the IMS Shared Queues Sysplex by adding the IMSID as the affinity name to the routing information. This information is used by the Sysplex Manager tool to route messages to back-end IMS's within a sysplex. The IMS DLIModel utility plugin is enhanced to support IMS DB Web services by providing a Data Access Services configuration editor that helps users write queries to access Data Access Services as a Web service. Additional integration items being provided as separate products for IMS V10 and IMS V11 users: IMS Web 2.0 support of IBM Mashup Center InfoSphere MashupHub V1.0 allows customers to extend their IMS investment into Web 2.0 mashup and application solutions by providing access to IMS transactions through RSS, ATOM, or XML feeds. This support provides easy remix and mashup of IMS COBOL and PL/I applications to extend business logic, and unleash these applications for new business opportunities and increased partnership in the Web market. This provides easy access to information, to rich browser-based applications, and to social networking and collaboration software in the enterprise in a secure, reliable way. This support is a plugin in a suite of integrated products that enables organizations to easily catalog, combine, transform, and remix any type of data and content. It transforms data sources into RESTful services and feeds, and supports operations (aggregate, sort, filter) for composite services. IBM Mashup Center also includes WebSphere Application Server as the Web server hosting the generation tooling and runtime engine for the Web 2.0 application. IMS SOAP Gateway -- a separate, no-charge, product downloadable from the Web -- is enhanced to support IMS Synchronous Callout support and to handle data streams that become multi-segment messages. The Web Services Description Language (WSDL) can be used to pass messages that consist of multiple data structures and require input/ output mapping, order, and number of occurrences. This provides IMS multi-segment applications the ability to participate in SOA from Windows, AIX, Linux on System z, and z/ OS environments, using the IMS Connect XML Adapter function. 6 Manageability ease towards autonomic computing User exit enhancements add additional user exit points, provide the ability to call multiple exit routines from a single exit point, and allow selected IMS Control Region user exits (as defined in the Exit Routine Reference manual) to be refreshed. New exit points are provided for early initialization (called early during IMS initialization and after user exit refresh), for Common Queue Server (CQS) events (called after IMS processes a CQS event), and for CQS Structure events (called after IMS processes a CQS Structure event). This changes the architecture of these exits to support a list of exits defined by type rather than by IMS-specific exit name. These exit routines are made easier to manage by letting IMS manage multiple instances of the same user exit type. This supports dynamic change of these exits without requiring an IMS restart. A command is provided that refreshes exit routines while the IMS control region is active. Commands are also provided to display user exit information. This enhances IMS availability by not requiring the IMS Control Region to be stopped to refresh these user exit routines. Command enhancements: Database Quiesce enables a coordinated recovery point to be created across an IMS Sysplex for IMS Fast Path Data Entry Databases (DEDB), Fast Path areas, Full Function databases, and database groups, without taking resources offline or causing applications to encounter an unavailable database. It uses a new form of type-2 UPDATE command that allows a new recovery point to be created and the database restored to a point of consistency, when there are no updates pending for the database and the stored information accurately reflects the current information in it. When this point is reached, an image copy may be taken to provide a quick method of recovering the database to this point. After the quiesce has completed, the resource remains open and allocated to IMS. A sample use of quiesce is for a customer to issue a command to quiesce a set of databases to create a recovery point for them. This does not incur the overhead of closing and opening the database data sets and unauthorizing and reauthorizing the databases. This makes it easier for customers to establish recovery points without taking resources offline, which improves availability, and allows the issuing of one command to achieve that task, easing use. DC type-2 QUERY command support extends the type-2 command architecture to include IMS Transaction Manager resources of nodes, users, LTERMs, and user IDs. The QUERY commands are enhanced to allow wildcards and filters that provide options not available to type-1 commands. This offers a simplified query that improves ease of use for managing these IMS resources, and increases efficiency by consolidating output of several type-1 commands into a single type-2 command. OTMA type-2 commands support creates new type-2 OTMA commands. QUERY OTMAOTI provides the ability to monitor an OTMA transaction instance, which represents input messages under a Transaction Pipe (TPIPE) for a given Transaction Member (TMEMBER). This also identifies potential problems that may result in outages, such as storage filling up with control blocks associated with each transaction instance. QUERY, CREATE, UPDATE, and DELETE OTMADESC provide the ability to dynamically change the destination of output messages while IMS is running, thus providing for workload balancing of outbound transactions in their IMSPlex environment without restarting IMS. These commands also enhance ease of use and availability by providing for wild cards, filters, elapsed time specified in seconds, and alerts to potential bottlenecks. Syntax Checker enhancements are provided for customers who want to define, verify, and validate parameters and their values in members of the IMS.PROCLIB for IMS V11, including support for new PROCLIB members added for the Open Database function. These enhancements also expand from displaying just the key-value to include sub-keys at start time, when Syntax Checker is processing an existing IMS PROCLIB member. This improves the manageability of IMS installation and release migration. The RACF Mixed Case Password startup parameter PSWD=(U/M) enhancement includes a default value of "R" to enable use of the value defined to RACF. Serviceability enhancements IMS DB Reliability, Availability, Serviceability (RAS) enhancements enable GSAM XRST with an empty GSAM output dataset, and improve U845 abend information, thus reducing the time needed to resolve problems. IBM Europe Software Announcement ZP IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 6

7 GSAM XRST, when repositioning an empty output dataset. An U0102 abend with new reason code is issued in this situation, allowing the customer to quickly determine the cause of the problem and resubmit the XRST job. This eliminates data loss and time wasted determining the cause of the problem. The cause of the problem is clearly identified and documented, along with a detailed explanation of the steps that need to be taken to successfully complete XRST. This is both an availability and usability enhancement, as it provides the ability to quickly determine the cause of the problem and resume normal processing with minimal downtime. DFS1058E message issued prior to U0845 abends provides both an availability and usability enhancement, as it provides the customer and the IMS support team the ability to quickly determine the location and cause of U0845 abends. Database Level Trace using the UPDATE DB command provides the ability to start database-related traces for selected databases, permitting the customer to capture needed trace information without impacting their applications, when requested to do so by IMS support. This helps eliminate unnecessary trace information and helps ensure that needed information stays in the trace table. DIAGNOSE command enhancements include SNAP Function resources of SNAP Block (CSCD), Module, Structure, and User. This helps determine the current maintenance level of the module under analysis, and the module address for use in diagnosing and debugging difficult and complex problems. The enhancements can also help verify that the fix was properly applied by the customer, saving IMS support and customer time in problem determination. IMS Dump Formatter is enhanced to include Log Record Extraction. Log records that were not physically written to the log data set are extracted from buffers in the dump and added to the log. This simplifies problem diagnosis and can reduce problem turnaround time. Reduce number of Aliases contained in the SDFSRESL. This reduces the likelihood of making an alias-related library maintenance mistake, when modules are copied from one data set to another. Knowledge Based Log Analysis (KBLA) enhancements provide for data entry panel scrolling and multi-volume KBLA output dataset allocation. They enhance the usability of the panels and of the generated JCL. Additional IMS manageability enhancements also provided through the IMS V10 service process: Dynamic LOCKTIME enhancement provides a dynamic command needed to allow the user to change the LOCKTIME value without a system outage. The timeout value is set at IMS startup and is used later to wake up tasks that have been waiting too long for locks. Users need to change the value to synchronize with changing business conditions (for example, changing a quarterly interest calculation for many accounts). Dynamic Resource Definition (DRD) maintenance utilities enhance usability by providing a set of utilities and mechanisms to generate JCL streams that create an RDDS or generate CREATE commands from IMS Sysgen macros, a MODBLKS data set, or log records. Support is provided to invoke the utilities from the Manage Resources panel, with the ISPF IMS Application Menu. This improves DRD usability by providing the additional ability to create or re-create an RDDS. It also facilitates cutover to DRD by reducing the manual effort required to create an RDDS. This set of utilities generates an RDDS from checkpoint and x22 log records and from Sysgen macros. It can generate CREATE commands from MODBLKS data sets and from Sysgen macros. RDDS content can be displayed. Manage Resources panels can be used to drive selections and generate the JCL to perform these tasks. These functions provide customers the ability to recover or create an RDDS from log records to prevent updates to resource definitions being lost across a cold start. The utilities provide additional options for migrating to DRD. They provide the ability to define resources when IMS is down and they support mixed DRD and non-drd environments. Resource definitions can be transported between IMS systems running with or without DRD enabled. SPOC Print Options allow the user to specify three new print options: WRAP, BYCOL (by column), and BYRSC (by resource). SPOC Print Options provides new print formatting options of printed output from TSO SPOC, REXX SPOC, batch SPOC, and related programs. The printed output can be formatted in three styles: WRAP (wrapped to the next line as needed), BYCOL (printed by groups of columns), and BYRSC (printed by groups of resources). The new options can be selected from the TSO SPOC preferences panel or as input parameters to the batch programs. This provides ease of use. 8 Scalability in high performance/capacity/availability/recovery Application Control Blocks library (ACBLIB) usability enhancements enable you to load the ACB members into 64-bit storage and create DFSMDA members for the dynamic allocation of the ACBLIB data sets. It changes IMS online change to use dynamic allocation for the inactive ACBLIB and allows access to the inactive ACBLIB when IMS is active. The inactive ACBLIB can be taken offline for maintenance without an IMS outage, making it easier to take ACBLIB offline to resize and dynamically allocate the ACBLIB datasets. This improves IMS availability and reduces the amount of read I/O by caching ACB members in 64-bit storage, thereby providing quicker access. This simplifies operations and improves storage utilization and performance. Local System Queue Area (LSQA) Storage Reduction allows use of 64-bit private storage for Content Directory Element (CDE)-like elements in tracking certain types of storage from the IMS CTL and DL/I regions. Previously, when issuing a large number of storage requests, the CDE blocks could fill available 24-bit private storage and the z/os Recovery Termination Manager would be unable to get sufficient storage to process soon-to-follow IMS abnormal termination. This could bring down the IMS address space with a system 40D abend, which skips all taskrelated cleanup. Without cleaning up allocated common storage, a z/os IPL could be required due to insufficient common storage to bring IMS back up. This enhancement reduces use of 24- bit private storage by IMS to track certain types of IMS storage, which can reduce the chance of such 40D abends and subsequent z/os re-ipls. Enhanced diagnostics are also added to help determine the cause of these abends should they still occur. Database Recovery Control (DBRC) enhancements offer new serviceability options for the Recovery Control data sets (RECON). BPE-based DBRC provides the option of online DBRC regions running on a BPE base. This provides them with refreshable user exits, multiple exits of the same user exit type, and external tracing. DBRC Security override for nonproduction RECON copies helps enforce security by providing a method to allow users to access a copy of a RECON that had CMDAUTH enabled without using CMDAUTH. This allows the user to optionally set a data set high level qualifier (HLQ) attribute in the RECON. If the HLQ of the data set being accessed does not match the HLQ of the COPY1 RECON, CMDAUTH is not used. This helps in instances where security is not necessary in the test or debugging environment and removes the bypassing of security checking for copied RECONs and eases use. Unconditional deletion of RECON information allows the user to specify a maximum retention period for recovery information with the new CLEANUP.RECON command. This removes Image Copies, updates ALLOC information, and forces PRILOG compression up to that time. This reduces the amount and size of RECON information kept about logs and image copies for data sets that no longer physically exist, often due to expiration policies. This enables the customer to easily and reliably clean up expired dataset RECON information, eliminating the need to find and clean up this information manually. DBRC migration and coexistence support. High Availability Large Database Online Reorganization (OLR) enhancements reduce CPU and elapsed time. Support is provided for VSAM KSDS, OLR locking lookaside, skip GNP for root-only databases, data set busy lock optimization, and eliminate block lock for Indirect List Data set (ILDS) updates. In addition, consolidating log records, where possible, into full block updates, reduces log volume generated by OLR, and provides a lock lookaside function to reduce the number of times a lock request goes to the IRLM. This reduces the number of calls to the IRLM, thus improving performance. Fast Path enhancements introduce a 64-bit Buffer Manager and provide new options to open Fast Path areas and new serviceability options. The Fast Path 64-Bit Buffer Manager provides Extended CSA (ECSA) relief and improves usability and flexibility. It moves all Data Entry Database (DEDB) data buffers above the bar into 64-bit control region private storage and creates a buffer pool of one or more subpools. Each subpool will support a unique control interval (CI) size. For each subpool allocated in 64- bit storage, a small system subpool is allocated in ECSA for system use such as Sequential Dependent Segments (SDEPs) inserts, Main Storage Databases (MSDBs), area opens, and so on. The control blocks used to manage the 64-bit buffers continue to reside in ECSA. IBM Europe Software Announcement ZP IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 8

9 FP serviceability/usability items provide performance improvements, service enhancements, and remove some unnecessary messages. This reduces CPU overhead previously caused by repeating GETMAIN/FREEMAIN of a work area caused by Message Processing Program (MPP) reschedules. FREEMAIN/GETMAIN of a work area is now only done if the current work area is not large enough to process the new transaction. It provides a new keyword OPTION (OPEN) to the UPD DB/UPD AREA type-2 command to enable users to open areas without defining the areas as PREOPEN. It provides a new subcode to the U1026, which indicates the abend is triggered by the applications' use of procopt=gox for easier problem determination. It adds the AREA name in the EPST (EPSTARNM), which is included in the 6705 SNAP log to support problem determination of ABENDU0035 (SYNC failure of DBCTL). Additional IMS V11 scalability enhancements also provided through the IMS V10 service process: DBRC Change Accum (CA) enhancement allows CA to execute even if a later image copy, online reorganization, or offline reorganization has occurred since the JCL was created. DBRC allows the JCL generated for CA to execute using the purge time in the JCL as long as input logs verify. This removes CA utility failures due to RECON contents changing between the time the CA JCL is generated and is executed. This minimizes disruption to 24 x 7 operations due to CA utility failures. DBRC DELETE.DB command enhancement improves performance and availability in reestablishing and recovering applications and data, when using this command and INIT.DB to re-establish it for resetting DB information in RECONs. Previously, when DBDSs/Areas and recovery-related information for a given DB was large, execution could take several minutes, during which time no other DBRC could access the RECONs, leading to performance degradation and timeouts. OLR Display and Query statistics and DEL/NODEL option for old input datasets allows /DIS DB OLR (type-1) and QRY OLR (type-2) to display more information. OLR Retain BYTES Field enhancement causes the BYTES field to be persistent across TERM OLR, so the information can be used to determine true progress of OLR and make OLR statistics more usable. Full Function Response Mode Recovery option allows full-function response mode to be recovered to eliminate sequence problems. This implements an option in a PROCLIB member, which if enabled allows IMS to recover full-function response mode following a user signoff or terminal logoff. Fast Path DEDB Areas Different Access Levels allows a DEDB Area to be updated to have a different access level than that of its DEDB, improving availability during change. It provides the ability for users to change area access for one or more areas of a DEDB via a command interface. This allows some areas of a DEDB to have Read Access while other areas of the same DEDB have Update Access. This enhancement removes the earlier restriction that all Areas of a DEDB have the same access, thus improving area availability and providing area access flexibility. Fast Path DEDBs, which have Sequential Dependents (SDEPs), can now be defined as nonrecoverable, extending earlier support for non-sdeps. This provides a means for storing sequential data without the logging of database change records, allowing the user to handle more IMS workload to create expendable journaling and debugging data with less work on the log datasets and using less DASD. Accessibility by people with disabilities A US Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) containing details on the product's accessibility compliance can be requested via IBM's Web site Product positioning IMS, the high-performance application and data server for System z, is critical to your business. Exclusive to the z/os platform, IMS V11 complements DB2, CICS, and WebSphere servers for database and transaction management. All of these are strategic IBM products and continue to be enhanced. 10 IMS Database Manager utilizes hierarchical organization technology, whereas DB2, Oracle, and desktop systems utilize relational database technology. Hierarchical and relational databases have each continued to grow with their specific characteristics and different roles to play. Hierarchical is best used for mission-critical work and for work that requires the utmost in performance. Relational is best used for decision support. Hierarchical databases can offer a significant performance edge over relational databases when queries are known beforehand and the data structure can be laid out accordingly. Because it is often not possible to know in advance what queries will need to be run, relational databases flatten the data into independent tables with structure only added at query time. This can make the relational model more complex in design than hierarchical, but gives relational a significant advantage in ease of use. Each type is best at what it does. The products supporting these technologies are enhanced to address the different application requirements and are continuing to overlap more and more in their capabilities. However, the product originally designed for a particular capability will inherently be the best. Relational and hierarchical technology can work together for optimum solutions. Users can efficiently store operational data in hierarchical form, which can be accessed easily by their favorite relational decision support tools, with minimal impact on the production hierarchical data. IMS data can be accessed directly or propagated and replicated with relational data for summarizing, enhancing, and mining. IBM provides standard application interfaces for accessing IMS as well as other data. Both relational and hierarchical IMS data can be most efficiently accessed, together or independently, using the IMS Transaction Manager and WebSphere servers. IBM continues to invest in and deliver these complementary solutions. IMS Transaction Manager, CICS, and WebSphere servers are all strategic application managers and are enhanced to take advantage of each other. They each have inherently different characteristics. IMS is more efficient in application management, data storage, and data access but applies strict rules for this access. WebSphere makes it easier to serve the Web and integrate data that may have been less defined in advance. Thus, they play different roles in the enterprise. Customers are using both application managers -- WebSphere for newer Webbased applications and IMS for more mission-critical high performance/availability and low-cost/ transaction applications and data. IMS, Rational, and WebSphere products together have been providing tools to make this combination an optimum environment. Using IMS TM Resource Adapter, WebSphere and Rational development tooling can develop Web applications that can serve the Web and easily access existing or new mission-critical IMS applications. Using the IMS DB Resource Adapter and IMS Open Database Access, WebSphere applications can also access IMS DB data directly. IBM demonstrates its commitment to you by continuing to enhance IMS. Current investments have: Substantially improved database availability Established open access to IMS transactions Extended Parallel Sysplex systems support Hardware and software support services SmoothStart/installation services IBM Installation Services are provided for IMS by IBM Global Services or your IBM Business Partner at an additional cost. For additional information, contact your IBM representative and ask for Installation Services for IMS. Additional technical services (planning and migration assistance, performance tuning, and other services) can be obtained through the Worldwide IMS Product Affinity Services team. 13 IMS V10 is the last release of IMS in which IMS information is available in BookManager format. IMS information continues to be available online (including the diagnosis information) as PDF files and in XHTML in the Information Management Software for z/os Solutions Information Center at Hardcopy books containing IMS V11 information can also be purchased from the IBM Publications Center at Performance considerations Recent tests show that a two-way IMS Full Function Data Sharing and Shared Queues environment can handle twice the transaction volume on a System z10 compared to the same number of CPs on a z990 using approximately 95% of the configured processor. On a single IMS System z9 with IMS V10, the IBM performance group previously achieved rates of 22,372 transactions pre second with Fast Path database update using a single IMS control region. Using IBM DS8000 ( ), IMS reached 82 megabytes per second logging bandwidth. This shows that IMS scales up to large logging requirements for high-stress IMS activity such as MSC and Shared Queues. These performance tests demonstrate that nothing can match the performance of IMS and System z in transaction rates and database access.
