1 Kristen L. Jellison (maiden name: DiNorscia) EDUCATION: 2003 Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge, Massachusetts Ph.D. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Thesis: Molecular and genetic analysis of Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts: sources and genotypes in the environment 1997 Cornell University Ithaca, New York Bachelor of Science, Magna Cum Laude with Honors School of Civil and Environmental Engineering Undergraduate Thesis: Enhanced Ripening of Slow Sand Filters APPOINTMENTS: Lehigh University Bethlehem, Pennsylvania Assistant Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering RESEARCH EXPERIENCE: Lehigh University Bethlehem, Pennsylvania Assistant Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Research projects focus on (i) identification of the sources, fate, and transport of Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts in watersheds, (ii) investigations of new water treatment technologies to target Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts, and (iii) development and optimization of drinking water treatment technologies for use in developing countries Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge, Massachusetts Ph.D. Thesis Advisors: Dr. Harold F. Hemond, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Dr. David B. Schauer, Division of Bioengineering and Environmental Health Designed a molecular detection method for Cryptosporidium oocysts in environmental samples; applied method to a two-year watershed study for better characterization of sources and species of oocysts in the environment. Used water quality data to identify potential correlations with oocyst presence. Also analyzed the genetic variability of oocysts shed from Canada geese. Work involved surface water filtration and water quality monitoring, wildlife fecal sampling, immunomagnetic separation, DNA extraction, nested PCR, restriction digestion, cloning, DNA sequencing, and phylogenetic anaysis Cornell University, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering Ithaca, New York Honors Program Undergraduate Thesis Project Advisor: Dr. Richard I. Dick, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering Designed and performed laboratory-scale experiments to investigate the effects of media modifications on the performance of slow sand filters in drinking water treatment. TEACHING EXPERIENCE: Lehigh University Bethlehem, Pennsylvania Assistant Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Courses taught include: Engr5: Freshman Engineering Experience; CEE 275: Environmental, Geotechnics, and Hydraulics Laboratory; CEE 379: Environmental Case Studies; CEE 476: Environmental Biotechnology; CEE 472: Wastewater Treatment Facilities Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge, Massachusetts Graduate student mentor in the Undergraduate Research Opportunity (UROP) Program Individually supervised undergraduate students in laboratory and field research.
