4 Flexibility an universal problem Change is the continuous factor in today's systems : Business change without ITchange does not exist; IT innovations enable new possibilities; IT is mission critical in our modern society; I. Law of continuing change A system that is used undergoes continuing change until it is judged more cost effective to freeze and recreate it. II. Law of increasing entropy The entropy of a system (its unstructuredness) increases with time, unless specific work is executed to maintain or reduce it. Laws of software evolution (Belady en Lehman) System evolution obstructs further evolution Evolution happens but leads to erosion of structure making evolution more difficult and in the end impossible. Software Evolution Paradox (Van Deursen) We have to do something! The entropy grows unless we add energy into the system. 5 Behind today s SOA hype are two fundamental movements continuous demand for business flexibility pull push IT market convergence Enterprise Architecture Web Services standards Service Oriented Architecture is... an Enterprise Architecture style that can be realized with... a standards based IT development and integration technology 9 The principle of SOA I. Contract based collaboration principle» reduce dependencies between parts loose coupling;» only explicit dependencies, structured in service contracts (interfaces);» separation of concerns black box principle. II. Standardized concepts principle» reduce the number of components ( dedoubling, rationalization);» reuse of services. Dependency Diversity SOA is an Enterprise Architecture style 10

7 Service design rules Rule 1: Design from a strategic perspective... services derived from business change scenario s; Forget use-cases, use change cases! Business strategy is the source of business change scenarios. Use cases may only show how the system is working NOW. But you don t need SOA for that! The quality of your business strategy limits the future flexibility of your SOA. 13 NIST definition of cloud computing Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. 14

15 SOA beyond the hype SOA is here to stay In 2012 the SOA and Enterprise Architecture hype is long gone, but we will talk about Enterprise Architecture like we talk about Project Management today and we will talk about SOA technology like we talk about RDBMS today. We don t talk about it, we just do it! The Could-hype proves these statements! SOA: a healthy lifestyle change SOA is like health and fitness. There is no quick fix. You can't just buy a diet book and join a health club and expect to get fit. You have to follow the diet and exercise regularly. It requires a lifestyle change. The same is true for SOA.
