3 PEM PC Software IM E 1 INTRODUCTION Eaton Corporation s PEM PC Software is designed to monitor and control a TVSS Power Event Monitor (PEM) using a personal computer running Microsoft Windows. Communication between the computer and the PEM is established via either a Modbus RTU (COM port) or TCP/IP (Ethernet) connection. The PEM PC Software gives the user the following abilities: Voltage Monitoring Event Count Display Event Retrieval PEM Configuration It is assumed that the user is familiar with the Windows operating system including: general setup and configuration; navigating the file system using Windows Explorer, downloading files from the Internet; expanding ZIP files; and installing software. If you are unfamiliar with any of these operations, please refer the Windows operating system help files for assistance, or contact Eaton Corporation s Power Quality Technical Support at This manual is to be used in conjunction with the PEM Instruction Manual, IM E. 2 SOFTWARE INSTALLATION 2.1 System Requirements Microsoft Windows 98/98SE/ME; Windows 2000 Service Pack 3; Windows XP Service Pack 2 Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 or greater Windows Installer 3.0 (except for Windows 98/ME, which require Windows Installer 2.0 or later) Internet Explorer 5.01 or later Hard drive space: 912 KB (Program only. Additional space will be required for saved history log files) Note: This instruction manual was prepared using Microsoft Windows XP. For other versions of Windows, the names of various Window menus may differ from what is described. 2.2 Downloading the Software The PEM PC Software is provided free of charge, and can be downloaded from Perform a search using the search terms PEM software to locate the file on the Website. Note that the downloaded file will be in ZIP format, and needs to be expanded using either Windows XP s built-in un-zip feature, or one of several decompression programs. Rev. 2-3/2007 Page 1

4 IM E PEM PC Software 2.3 Installation Important: If upgrading a previously installed version of this software, you must first uninstall the prior version by clicking Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Eaton PM Interface > Remove. To install the PEM PC Software, first expand the software s ZIP file into a temporary directory of your choosing. Open the temporary directory and double-click setup.exe to start the installation wizard. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. Once installed, the temporary directory can be deleted. Note: If Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 or greater is not installed on your computer, the message shown to the right will appear. Click Yes to be taken to Microsoft s.net Framework download site. Be sure to download the correct version of.net for your computer s operating system. Or use Windows update: Windows Update > Custom > Software, Optional > Microsoft.NET Framework. After.NET Framework 2.0 or higher is installed, re-run the PEM PC Software setup program. After installation is complete, an Eaton PEM Interface shortcut icon will appear on the desktop, and an Eaton program folder will have been added to the Start > All Programs menu. 2.4 Communicating with the PEM Important! Please Read. A physical or wireless interconnection between the computer and PEM must be established before communicating with the PEM as described in Section 4 Making a Modbus or TCP/IP Connection. Establish an interconnection between the computer and PEM by doing one of the following: Direct wiring between the computer s COM port and the PEM s Modbus RTU connector (J5) using an RS-232 to RS-485 converter. See Appendix A for recommended components and wiring. Direct wiring between the computer and PEM s Ethernet ports via a CAT-5E crossover cable with RJ45 connectors. See Appendix A for recommended components and wiring. Wireless network, with both the computer and PEM being part of a wireless TCP/IP network. Wireless network configuration is beyond the scope of this manual. Your company s I.T. Department should perform the necessary integration of the PEM into the wireless network, or contact Eaton Corporation s Power Quality Technical Support Center ( ) for assistance. 5 PEM PC Software IM E 3 STARTING THE PEM PC SOFTWARE Start the PEM PC Software either by double-clicking the Eaton PEM Interface shortcut icon on the desktop, or by clicking Start > All Programs > Eaton > PEM Interface. When the software first starts a Connect Screen will appear. Use this screen to select the connection method: Either Modbus (for a direct RS-485 connection) or TCP/IP (for a direct or wireless Ethernet connection) as described in Section 4 Making a Modbus or TCP/IP Connection. Tip: The PEM PC Software can be run multiple times, with each instance of the program connected to a different PEM. This allows, for example, the viewing of each PEM s Voltage Screen and/or Event Counts Screen in separate windows. 4 MAKING A MODBUS OR TCP/IP CONNECTION Depending on how the computer is connected to the PEM, make either a Modbus connection per Section 4.1, or TCP/IP connection per Section Modbus Connection 1. Click Modbus Tab 2. Click drop-down arrow and select the COM port that is connected to PEM via an RS-232 to RS-485 converter. 3. Click drop-down arrow and select baud rate (default is 19200). 4. Use arrows to select Modbus Address (default is 3). 5. Click Connect to make connection to PEM. Rev. 2-3/2007 Page 3

6 IM E PEM PC Software 4.2 TCP/IP Connection 1. Click TCP/IP Tab 2. Click Create Entry to create a new Device Name as shown below; otherwise, skip to Step 7 to select a previously entered Device Name. 7. Click drop-down arrow and select the desired preconfigured Device Name. 8. Click Connect to make connection to PEM using parameters defined by the selected Device Name. You can View, Edit, or Remove a previous entry. 3. Type in a Device Name that will appear in the above TCP/IP Connect Screen. 4. Type in the PEM s IP Address (default is ). 5. Use arrows to select Modbus Address (default is 3). 6. Click Save Entry to save parameters and return to the TCP/IP Connect Screen. 4.3 Current Version and Contact Information Once connected to the PEM, click Help > About to show the PEM Interface Software and Firmware Software version numbers, and also obtain a list of contact information. 7 PEM PC Software IM E 5 OPERATING MODES Once connected to the PEM, the PEM PC Software supports two modes: View and Config located under the Mode menu. Immediately after a connection is established, the View mode is automatically selected and the Voltages Screen is displayed. 5.1 View mode The View mode consists of three tabbed screens that allow the user to monitor frequency; voltages; and retrieve and view event data from the PEM s history log. All data is presented in real time and updated once every second Voltages Voltages Being Measured (Checkmark indicates voltage is actively being measured; otherwise, voltage reads 0 or is not displayed) PEM Model 1P101 1P201 1S101 3Y101 3Y201 3Y300 NN201 NN400 NN501 System Wiring System Voltage 127 L-N 240 L-N 127 L-N 127 L-N 277 L-N 347 L-N 240 L-L 480 L-L 600 L-L VAB VBC VCA VLL Avg VAN VBN VCN VLN Avg VNG The Voltages screen displays the PEM s current line frequency along with its minimum and maximum values; line-to-line; line-to-line average; line-to-neutral; line-to-neutral average; and neutral-to-ground voltages. The voltages displayed, however, depend on the type of system being monitored see table above. The example Voltages screen above shows the measured voltages of a PEM Model 3Y101 as it monitors a 120 volt, Wye system. Rev. 2-3/2007 Page 5

8 IM E PEM PC Software History Log The History Log Screen allows the user to retrieve, view, and save History Log events that have been recorded by the PEM. When first displayed, this screen shows the total number of events that have been recorded. In the example above, the Total Events box shows that 3 events have occurred numbered 0 thru 2. To retrieve History Log event data, first enter the range of events to be retrieved by entering those values in the Start Event and End Event boxes (up to 5,000 events can be stored in the PEM); and then clicking the Retrieve button. The PEM PC Software will download the selected range of History Log events and display the data in the Event Data box. Page 6 Rev. 2-3/2007

9 PEM PC Software IM E To save the downloaded event data to a file, click the File - Save History Log menu item to display the Save As dialog box. The event data will be saved in an ASCII comma separated variable (CSV) type of file that can later be opened in a spreadsheet program where the data can be viewed for analysis. The Save As dialog box allows the user to specify the following information: Save In: Select the folder where the file will be saved. File Name: Type in the name of the file to be saved default is history.csv. Save as type: Select the file type default is csv files (*.csv). The following spreadsheet shows a typical history log file as viewed in Microsoft Excel: Rev. 2-3/2007 Page 7

10 IM E PEM PC Software Event Counts The Event Counts Screen displays the type and number of events that have occurred for each phase. 5.2 Configuration Mode The Configuration Mode consists of two screens that allow the user to disconnect or configure the PEM TCP/IP or Modbus Screen When the Configuration Mode is first entered, one of the screens shown above will appear. The screen that appears depends on the communication method being used. For example, if the computer is connected to the PEM via TCP/IP, then the TCP/IP Screen will appear. Use either screen to disconnect to disconnect and connect to another PEM. Page 8 Rev. 2-3/2007

11 PEM PC Software IM E Device Configuration Screen Device Name The Device Name is normally the name entered when using a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) to communicate with the PEM via an IrDA connection (refer to PEM Hand Held Software Instruction Manual IM E). If this name was not entered via a PDA, then the factory default Device Name of??????? will appear. To change the device name, highlight the existing name and type in a new name that is 20 characters or less in length, and then click Set to send the new name to the PEM Modbus Address To change the Modbus Address, click the Up/Down arrows until the desired address is displayed (1 255 decimal), and then click Set to send the new address to the PEM. Factory default is Modbus Baudrate To change the Modbus Baudrate, first click the Drop-Down arrow to display a list of baudrates (19200 or 9600); click the desired baudrate; and then click Set to send the new baudrate to the PEM. Factory default is TCP/IP Address To change the IP Address, first highlight the existing IP Address value; type in a new value; and then click Set to send the new IP Address value to the PEM. Factory default is When connected via RS-485, wait at least 10 seconds for the new IP Address to be processed before making another change. When connected via Ethernet, the program will wait 20 seconds and then automatically try to reconnect to the PEM. Refer to Section Automatic Reconnect. Rev. 2-3/2007 Page 9

12 IM E PEM PC Software TCP/IP IP Mask To change the IP Mask, first highlight the existing IP Mask value; type in a new value; and then click Set to send the new IP Mask value to the PEM. Factory default is When connected via RS-485, wait at least 10 seconds for the new IP Mask to be processed before making another change. When connected via Ethernet, the program will wait 20 seconds and then automatically try to reconnect to the PEM. Refer to Section Automatic Reconnect TCP/IP Gateway To change the Gateway address, first highlight the existing Gateway address value; type in a new value; and then click Set to send the new Gateway address value to the PEM. Factory default is When connected via RS-485, wait at least 10 seconds for the new Gateway address to be processed before making another change. When connected via Ethernet, the program will wait 20 seconds and then automatically try to reconnect to the PEM. Refer to Section Automatic Reconnect Frequency The PEM s system frequency no longer needs to be manually configured. If a Frequency value is displayed on the Device Config screen, then its value will automatically be the correct system frequency. Note that if a new frequency value is selected and the Set button is clicked, the new frequency value is accepted by the PEM; however, 30 seconds later the frequency is recalculated and changed back its actual value. Also note that the displayed frequency value will not update unless the user leaves and then re-enters the Device Config screen Voltage To change the system voltage, either highlight the existing Voltage value and type in the new value, or click the Up/Down arrows until the desired voltage value is displayed; and then click Set to send the new Voltage value to the PEM. Note that the Voltage value must be within the range of the PEM s model number as shown in the table in Section Voltages Reset Parameters The user can reset the following PEM parameters to zero, to their current values, or to their factory default values. History Log: Erase all events in the History Log. Event Counts: Reset all Event Counts to zero. Surge Only: Resets the Surge Event counts to zero. Sag/Swell Only: Resets the Sag/Swell Event counts to zero. Min/Max Freq: Resets the System Frequency Minimum and Maximum values to the current frequency Calibration: Restores the PEM calibration values to factory defaults. (The calibration values can only be changed using the optional Local Display Module.) To reset any of the above parameters, first click the Drop-Down arrow to display a list of reset parameters; click the desired parameter; and then click Reset to send the command to reset the selected parameter to the PEM. 13 PEM PC Software IM E Computer Date/Time Displays the computer s current Date (MM/DD/YYYY) and Time (HR/MIN/SEC AM/PM) PEM Date/Time Displays the PEM s current Date (MM/DD/YYYY) and Time (HR/MIN/SEC AM/PM). To synchronize the PEM s date and time to that of the computer, click the Set PEM to Computer Time button Automatic Reconnect If the IP Address, IP Mask, or Gateway is changed, the program will automatically try to reconnect to the PEM in 20 seconds. If reconnection is successful, the program will continue to function normally. If reconnection fails, an Unable to restore connection Window will appear. In most cases, this window will appear when the computer s network configuration is no longer compatible with the new network IP Address, Mask, or Gateway. Click OK; exit the PEM PC Software program; reconfigure the computer s network parameters as necessary; and then restart the PEM PC Software and reconfigure its network settings as described in Section 4 Making a Modbus or TCP/IP Connection. 15 PEM PC Software IM E RS-485 Connections Connect the computer s RS-232 port to the PEM s Modbus RTU RS-485 connector (J5) using an RS-232 to RS-485 Converter as shown below. Set converter to its RS wire mode at a baud rate that matches the PEM s baud rate (default is 19200). Note: Eaton recommends using ferrule connectors on the ends of all wires that attach to plug-in connectors to eliminate stray wires from shorting. 16 IM E PEM PC Software Ethernet Connections Directly connect the computer to the PEM via their Ethernet ports, using a CAT-5E crossover cable with RJ45 connectors as shown below. Tip: If using a hub or switch between the computer and PEM, use standard patch cables (non-crossover) between all devices. CAT-5E crossover cable, used to directly connect the computer to the PEM. The following information is provided as a general guideline as how to set up your computer to communicate with the PEM using a crossover cable. If additional network information is required, we suggest you contact your company s IT department, or contact Eaton Corporation s Power Quality Technical Support Center ( ) for assistance. 17 PEM PC Software IM E After connecting the PEM to the computer using a crossover cable, set up the computer s Local Area Connection as follows: 1. Click Start > Control Panel > Network Connections to display the Network Connections Window. 2. Right-click Local Area Connection and then click Properties to display the Local Area Connection Properties Window. 3. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and then click Properties to display the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties Window. Rev. 2-3/2007 Page 15

18 IM E PEM PC Software Note: If your computer is already configured for use on an existing network, make note of all current Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties. After communicating with the PEM, you can then return the computer to its previous network configuration. 4. Assuming the PEM is set to its default IP Address of with an IP mask of , select Use the following IP address and then enter an IP Address that is within the same range as the PEM. In this example, the computer is being configured to use a static IP Address of with the same Subnet mask of Click OK, click Close, and then exit the Network Connections Window. 6. Start the PEM PC Software program (Section 3), and then make a TCP/IP connection (Section 4.2). Page 16 Rev. 2-3/2007
