4 Deutsche Bank Chair Deutsche Bank Luxembourg S.A. in September 2010 announced that it would fund the Deutsche Bank Chair at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance, in celebration of its 40-year anniversary in the country. Based at the Luxembourg School of Finance (LSF) the Chair specialises in research on banking and finance that finds application in the Luxembourg banking sector. Prof. Rajnish Mehra, world-renowned in the field of financial economics, in 2012 was appointed Deutsche Bank Chair of Finance. LISER In October 2012, LISER (formerly CEPS) and the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance agreed to cooperate on the development of PhD training. In particular, LISER agreed to host and supervise PhD candidates registered at the UL s Doctoral School in Economics and Finance. When a PhD candidate is hosted by LISER, LISER s researchers act either as a thesis co-supervisor or as a reference person. Through this joint development of PhD candidates, a wider collaboration of researchers of both institutions is encouraged. LISER is a Luxembourgish public research institute under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research. Its research focus lies in the field of social and economic policy including the spatial dimension. SES Chair In 2010, the University of Luxembourg and global satellite operator SES S.A. entered into a partnership with the aim of developing Luxembourg as a centre of excellence and innovation for advanced Information Communications Technology in satellite systems. Prof. Mahulena Hofmann in September 2011 was appointed SES Chair in Space, Satellite Communication and Media Law at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance, which forms a key part of this collaboration, contributing to existing media law research by integrating space law and global telecommunications issues. Additionally, the Chair works with the University s Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT). SES S.A. with its network of 56 geostationary satellites, teleports and offices around the globe, reaches around 99% of the world s population, providing solutions to broadcast, telecom, corporate and government customers worldwide. Private partnership Clifford Chance The Luxembourg branch of multinational law firm Clifford Chance supports the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance through a generous annual contribution to finance the FDEF s moot court teams. Moot courts allow law students to practice and train their research and advocacy skills by giving them a hypothetical case, with arguments presented to a panel of judges. Students from the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance take part in a number of international moot court competitions every year, with great success so far. Clifford Chance opened its Luxembourg office in 2000 and today counts a team of 70 lawyers and eight partners, with particular strengths in the areas of M&A and corporate investment funds, regulatory, capital markets, finance and tax, but also offering services in real estate, employment, litigation and dispute resolution. MPI Luxembourg The collaboration between the Max Planck Institute (MPI) and the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance (FDEF) started in 2012, the year the Institute was established in Luxembourg. The collaboration came naturally as both institutions aim at creating a lively and attractive environment for research and teaching, and more specifically for law. To reach this common goal, MPI and FDEF created links through exchange of expertise and knowledge, and by working together on research projects and teaching. Among other activities, they work together on supporting young academics in law to help foster the next generation of researchers. For example, PhD candidates at MPI are encouraged to enroll at the FDEF s Doctoral School of Law. The Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for International, European and Regulatory Procedural Law started its work in autumn This Institute is the first Max Planck Institute on legal matters outside of Germany. Contemporary teaching and learning arrangements are applied, which increasingly replace traditional front-of-class teaching. The course does therefore not stop at pure knowledge transfer but promotes independent problem solving, reflection, evaluation, analysis and the synthesis of specialist areas. Individual and high-quality support of students by lecturers is very important in this course. This is partly ensured by the low intake number of students. Master académique 4 semesters / 120 ECTS English / semester First degree qualifying for working in the field of business studies, economics, law, and mathematics (e.g. Bachelor, diploma or Staatsexamen) corresponding to a minimum of 180 ECTS or completed equivalent, recognised level of education corresponding to a minimum of 180 ECTS. 11 MASTER OF SCIENCE IN BANKING AND FINANCE MASTER IN WEALTH MANAGEMENT This Master programme is the centrepiece of the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance s Luxembourg School of Finance (LSF). Close to the financial centre and the EU institutions in Luxembourg-Kirchberg, students are prepared to assume the challenges of a profession in banking and finance. Contrary to MBA degrees that train generalists for global management, the educational philosophy of the LSF is to further conceptualised expertise linked to this particular sector. The programme pursues a balanced approach to business education, linking theory to real world business through teaching and research that are innovative, rigorous and relevant to career-long learning. The LSF is based on a worldwide network and counts internationally renowned financial experts as lecturers (e.g. from the INSEAD-Business School in Fontainebleau). Furthermore, students will follow a five-day tailor-made programme at the New York University Stern School of Business. Master of Science (M.Sc.) The Master in Wealth Management (MWM) at the University of Luxembourg provides well-trained future employees of banks, for which there is a continual demand. The curriculum of the MWM is unique in the world, as it combines pure finance courses with law, tax and communication courses, so as to perfectly cover the skill and knowledge set of successful wealth managers. The curriculum has been developed by the Luxembourg School of Finance in cooperation with the Private Banking Group Luxembourg (PBGL). Teaching in the MWM programme is participative and practiceoriented. Academic staff include professors from the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance at the University of Luxembourg and visiting academics from universities abroad. For all courses practitioners are drawn from the PBGL group to elaborate on the practical significance of the material learned. Each student will be assigned an academic supervisor and an industry mentor, with whom he or she will have periodic meetings. Wealth managers can work for private companies, trusts, foundations or family offices, or can be independent advisors. At the end of their studies in Luxembourg, all full and part-time students spend an academic week in residence at Singapore Management University. 12 months (full-time) or 24 months (part-time) Master professionnel Teaching languages English 2 semesters (full time) / 60 ECTS or 4 semesters (part time)/ 60 ECTS Enrolments 30 full-time and 30 part-time Teaching languages English for the entire programme Enrolments 30 Entry requirements Completed 4-year (240 ECTS) or 3-year studies (Bachelor / 180 ECTS with 3 years professional experience) in economics, finance or related areas. Students are selected on the basis of their application and an interview. Prof. Christian Wolff christian.wolff@uni.lu Christine Klein fdef-mbf@uni.lu // T / Entry requirements for the entire programme Open to students who have completed a 4-year Bachelor s degree (240 ECTS) or a 3-year Bachelor s degree (180 ECTS) with 3 years professional experience.
