Recent trends in interac,on design: Ubiquitous computing (Weiser, 1988), Tangible interaction (Hornecker & Buur, 2006) Embodied interaction (Dourish, 2001) Skill-based interaction (Djajadiningrat & Stienstra 2007) Augmented reality, Ambient Intelligence, Human-Brain interfacing

Ques, ons and worries Is there an alterna,ve to all these screens? Can we beqer integrate the physical and the digital in design? Can we design products that fit beqer into our everyday lives? Does wearable mean the same as embodied? Can we design products that acknowledge and ac,vely support the ac,vity of the whole body- in- ac,on?

APPROACH

Observe human prac,ces

Design and prototype interac,ve physical- digital products

Collaborate with crea,ve technologists Tangible Embodied Embedded Interac,on ACM Conference TEI (2016 Eindhoven)

Test and evaluate with users in context

Reflect on cases using theory Clark 97 Kelso 95 Merleau-Ponty 62 Kirsh 11 Dreyfus 72 Varela 91 Dourish 01 Suchman 87 Clancey 97 Ingold 12

How can we design interac,ve products that become an intui,ve, integral part of our embodied being- in- the- world?

Gekng a grip on the interac,on design of tomorrow: A BIT OF THEORY

I think, Therefore I am Cogni,ve Science The Mind Body split Computers: Hardware implements software Metaphor: Minds are information-processing machines The brain implements the informationprocessing mind I think, Therefore I am. I am! I THINK! Therefore I am ALIVE! Alive with life and thought and mind. Sweet consciousness! And immortal soul

Ideas, thoughts, desires, wishes, needs, opinions, knowledge, informa,on, feelings, emo, ons, percep, ons, cogni,on, social, societal, cultural Mechanics, physics, movement, loca,on- in- space, health,

Digital compu,ng: mind stuff Physical Product Design: physical stuff

Digital compu,ng: mind stuff Embodied Being- in- the- World Physical Product Design: physical stuff

Merleau- Ponty, Phenomenology of Percep,on, 1962 The blind man s stick has ceased to be an object for him, and is no longer perceived for itself; its point has become an area of sensitivity, extending the scope and active radius of touch, and providing a parallel to sight. [p166]... If I want to get used to a stick, I try it by touching a few things with it, and eventually I have it well in hand, I can see what things are within reach or out of reach of my stick.... Habit is knowledge in the hands, which is forthcoming only when bodily effort is made and cannot be formulated in detachment from that effort.

Digital compu,ng: mind stuff Can we design in between mind and body? Physical Product Design: physical stuff

How to design an interac,ve product that forms a natural extension of our embodied being- in- the- world..like the blind man s cane?

Four themes: Social Prac, ces Body Environment Traces Skills Scaffolds

SCAFFOLDS

Bad design: confusing our distributed cognition

Scaffolds: theory Don Norman (1987): knowledge in the world Hutchins, (1995) Distributed cogni,on Clark (1997) Scaffolding. Use the suppor,ng structure in the world to think with Kirsh (1994) Epistemic acfon Reorganize the world such that it becomes more easy to deal with Abacus Montessori blocks (discussed in Klemmer et al, 2006)

Applica,on in design: Tangible User Interface Tangibles represent digital informa,on in a body- friendly way. This makes them more user friendly. Ishii & Ullmer (1997) (Ishii, 2008)

SOCIAL PRACTICES

Social Prac, ces: People make sense of things in interac,on with each other (filmpje)

Social prac, ces: theory The case of the flight strips Study by Hughes et al, 1995 (Dourish, 2001) (Suchman, 1987) Ethnomethodology

Design example: Fireflies Digital technology mediates situated social coordina9on (Bakker, 2013)

SKILLS

Skill: a coupling between percep,on and ac,on

Skill & Craumanship

Skills: theory Affordances (James Gibson, 1979)

Bach Y Rita: Sensory Subs,tu,on Extension of percep,on- ac,on couplings Seeingwithsound.com
