7 Na-onal epa-ent Survey Ø First implementa0on in 2010; The survey is anonymous and op0onal. For two months the survey was online on 33 of the most popular health portals such as insurance portals, pa0ent portals or special health portals in Germany and Switzerland. Ø Pa0ents, chronically ill persons and people surfing for health related informa0on in the www are interviewed regarding their internet use and the effects on their health behaviour and treatment adherence. Socio- economic data, surfing type, insurance status, diseases, treatment pathway, medical therapy. Usage of websites and apps regarding specific diseases, therapies, personal situa0on. Specific focus: used apps for diagnosis or medica0on, willingness to pay, evalua0on of up- to- date innova0ons on the digital health market.

8 Usage of the internet/webbased services Websites informing about a healthy lifestyle Online purchase of drugs, dietary supplements, or other health- related products Health apps for weight or nutri0on, for preven0on, sport and for physical ac0vity Website / apps dealing with alterna0ve medicine or naturopathy Online services offered by my health insurance regarding a healthy lifestyle (physical ac0vity, nutri0on, preven0on etc.) App for tracking body data, physical ac0vity etc (e.g. wearables, pedometers, scales) Online module (elearning, webinar, coach) for healthy lifestyle, weight reduc0on, nutri0on or similar (e.g. stress avoidance, smoking cessa0on) App or online service regarding vaccina0on for me or my rela0ves/children (e.g. diary, appointment reminders, elearning)

9 Effects of the app usage regarding own medica-on intake I can now becer understand and follow the instruc0ons from my doctor regarding my medica0on. I can now becer deal with my medica0on and their regular intake. My doctor already prescribed me another drug based on my internet search or app use. I have already changed the dose or the combina0on of my medica0on by myself.

10 Open text ques-on regarding ideas for improvement of apps for medica-on Comprehensibility, usability, readability Transparency, high quality, integrity, up- to- dateness of the informa0on Drug- drug interac0ons when taking combina0ons of drugs Searching and comparing similar pharmaceu0cal ingredients and package sizes Recommenda0ons for the daily life during medica0on intake (esp. Nutri0on, life style) Help with dosage and with intake and applica0on of drugs

11 Main findings of the Na-onal epa-ent Survey Ø The use of digital health services by ci0zens and pa0ents has posi0ve effects on coping with diseases, treatment and medica0on adherence, discussions with health professionals, understanding of behavioural rules and the coopera0on with other actors such as health insurances or rehabilita0on facili0es. Ø Because of the parallel existence of the tradi0onal health care system and the digital health care market ci0zens / pa0ents would like to get recommenda0ons for digital services from their GPs or health insurances. Ø The comprehensibility, the usability and the readability of digital services are the biggest concerns of the users. Thus, digital health services oden lose impact and interven0on poten0al because users deny these acributes.
