The Board The Board met twice, on the 19th of May and on the loth of November. The main items of discussion were the 1978 budget and the legal status of the Institute. Government plans to reconsider the overall position of the socalled Interuniversity Institutes made it necessary to study anew the possibility and desirability of becoming an institute of this kind. The matter has now been a point of discussion for the last fifteen years. In the spring of 1976 it became evident that officials from the Ministry of Education and Science in The Hague were favourably disposed to help find a solution to this problem, and during the Board meeting in May there were strong indications that a decision on this vital matter will possibly be reached in the course of the coming year. The budget for 1978 was approved by the Board for presentation to the Ministry of Education and Science. In connection with the budget the problem of the annual allocation for the acquisition of books. etc. was discussed as well as the discrepancy due to the steep rise in book prices resulting from inflation, which has the undesirable effect of exhausting acquisition funds before the end of the budget year. The Board decided that in such cases it will no longer automatically stop acquisition activities, butwill report the situation to the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Education and Science, with a request to take a decision on the matter in consultation with the Institute. It is the opinion of the Board, in view of its responsibility for a high Standard of scholarship in the Institute's work. that it can no longer bear the responsibility alone for inevitable gaps in the collections owing to a lack of funds for acquisitions. 10

A further point of discussion was the problem of accommodation in respect to both personnel and the storage of material. The Board came to the conclusion that the present building no longer meets the minimum requirements for storage of the evergrowing collections, and for proper accommodation of staff. In addition, there is the inconvenient layout of the building with storage space spread over extensive areas on different floors which inhibits efficiënt use of the collections. 2. Directors The management was in the hands of prof. dr. Fr. de Jong Edz. and Mr. J.R. van der Leeuw, theformermainly confininghis work to the scholarly aspects of theactivities, while Mr. Van der Leeuw took responsibility for all matters of finance, organization. staffing, current affairs and everyday management. 3. Staff On January 15, 1976, the death occurred at Zeist of Mrs. A. DiazVan der Goot. Even before the Second World War the Institute was indebted to Mrs. Diaz for her generous services to its branchestablishment in Paris at that time. After the war Mrs. Diaz was employed by the Institute for nearly a quarter of a century; from 1963 on, in the position of assistantlibrarian. She laid the foundation for the subjectdivision and cataloguing of the collections of periodicals, especially of those dating from before 1945, a work which she continued to do until she reached the age of seventy. In addition, during the financially critical years after the end of the war, Mrs. Diaz took care of the Institute's administration. The directors and staff of the Institute will remember Mrs. DiazVan der Goot as a devoted member of staff, who undertook important work on behalf of some of its most valuable collections. On January 1, 1976, Mr. M.M. Segall Rosenmann entered the services of the Institute. After his rescue from persecution in Chile, where he taught at the University of Chile, Arica, Mr. Segall lectured for a period of sixteen months at the State University of Groningen. In accordance with an agreement made in advance, Mr. Segall's field of work will be with the department of Latin America and the arrangement of its collections. The vacancy of librarian, caused by the departure last year of Mr. R.F. Spoor (see Annual Report 1975, p. 10), was filled on November 1 whenmr. G.J.A. Riesthuis, up to then research officer at the Institute of Sociology with the State University of Utrecht, was appointed to this post. Further, the following persons were engaged by the Institute: Mrs. U.B.E. Balzer, as research assistant; Mrs. T.A. de Waal, as secretaryswitchboard operator; G.R. Keizer, as assistant in the Archives department; H.A. Kuipers, as bookbinder and restorator; Mrs. I. van de MuntTimmer, as assistant in the Cataloguing department; Mrs. M. Schrevel, as secretaryswitchboard operator, and H.G. Staphorst, as photographer. As per August 1, Mrs. H.M. van Nederveen ceased herfunctions 11

as secretary for the directorate and took up a post as research assistant with the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg department. In her place Mrs. N.H. de Bruin was appointed secretary to the directorate. B. DIRECTORS' REPORT 4. Internal Organization The annual meeting of staff was held on April 26, 1976 for the election of a new Institute's Council. This body now has the following members: P. Besselsen, Mrs. E.M. Koen, A.C. van Renssen, Mrs. M.T. Ruttede Boer, Mrs. M.W.H. Schreuder, Mrs. M.A. Visser, Mrs. CE. Wagenaar and the two directors as ex officio members. During the year under report the Council met seventeen times. Part of its work was delegated to committees, viz. the LibraryCommittee, the Archives Committee, the Committee for Accommodation, the Committee for Publications, as well as some ad hoc committees mainly acting as advisory bodies fortheappointmentofnewpersonnel. The Institute's Council was also active in the field of staffing, working conditions, frictions amongst staff members, promotions. 5. The legal status Both the Board and the Directors of the Institute have for years been under the impression that a solution to the problem of the legal status of personnel would be found in the transfer of the Institute from a Foundation to the status of an TnterUniversity Institute', to be run under the auspices of two or more universities and subsidized by the Ministry of Education and Science. However, in the course of the year under report it became evident that it would not be wise to think exclusively in terms of an Tnter University Institute', but to consider the possibility of a solution in other directions as well. With every stage of reorganization and of transition to a new status, full account must be taken of such basic factors as: the working conditions of the staff, the special character of the tasks allotted to the Institute, its freedom of action with regard to its publication activities, acquisition and growth of its collections, etc. Towards the end of the year a special committee was set up consisting of representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science, the Board of the Institute, its directors and representatives of the staff to study the various possibihties of achieving a permanent legal status. 6. Finance During the year 1976 there was no change for the better in the precarious financial position of the Institute. The increase in allotments for material expenditures, granted by the Ministry of Education and Science, was too unsubstantial to compensate for 12

the influence of inflation: it amounted to less than a third of the overhead price increase. On the other hand, the expenditures for the purchase of books andperiodicals, and for financing the Institute's book publication programme, rosé to considerably higher figures than the general inflation percentage would indicate. One fortunate circumstance in the present situation is that the Institute was kept running thanks to a generous allowance from the socalled Extra Funds (parkeerartikel), a surplus account controlled by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Science, Dr. G. Klein. With these funds several extra projects and purchases, accounted for elsewhere in this report, could be financed in part or in total. The Institute owes a special debt of gratitude to the State Secretary, Dr. Klein, as well as to the officers of the Ministry of Education and Science, who cooperated in this transaction. It must, however, be stated with emphasis that the financing of special projects has only full significance and value on the understanding that the Institute has at its disposal sufficiënt means and financial resources for its normal expenditure. Should it not be possible to increase the expenditures for the purchase of books, for binding and restoration and for the financing of the Institute's book publications by about 15% per annum, then in the long run the Institute will no longer be in a position to fulfil certain of its most essential tasks with the danger that it might lose its position as an international centre for the study of social history, now held thanks to its unique collections. A system of financing, partly covered by allotments from a surplus account 'Extra Funds' is too unstable a basis for sound management: one dash of the pen may cause this source to run dry in case a turn for the worse should occur in the development of public finances and the government's financial policies. The normal expenditures during the year under report were covered by the Ministry of Education and Science to the amount of Dfl for salaries, social charges and pensions; and of Dfl for material costs giving a total of Dfl ,800.. The Netherlands Organization for the Advancement of Pure Research (ZWO). The Hague, subsidized an amount of Dfl for the financing of two research and publication projects: the Archives Bakounine by Dr. A. Lehning and his staff, and the Russian Series on Social History, edited by Dr. B. Sapir and his assistant. Mr. A. Smirnov. Apart from these subsidies from government bodies there were two private organizations. which, like in former years, contributed to the Institute's finances: 'De Centrale' Life Insurance Company, The Hague, with Dfl. 10,000, for the Foundation for the Conservation of Materials in the Field of Social History, and the Atran Foundation. Inc., New York, with asubvention of $ 5,000, for the continuation of B. Sapir's work on the Russian Series. Over the past years a total of S 50,000, has been received for this purpose from the Atran Foundation and this organization expressed its intention to continue its support to the Institute in the future. Finally, a gift of was received from the Socialist International. Dfl. 10. from Mr. L.F.C.M. Kongs, and anonymously S 75.. as contributions to the Appeal Fund of the Institute. The Board, Directors and Staff of the Institute express their 13

sincere gratitude to all who this year again in one way or another supported its activities, thereby showing their keen interest in the Institute's work and welfare. A special word of thanks and appreciation goes to the members of Parliament who approved the Institute's budget, and to the officials of the Netherlands Organization for the Advancement of Pure Research who always have an open ear for the Institute's financial problems in connection with its research programmes. 7. Accommodation With the prospect in view of obtaining additional space by the end of the year 1976, when the localities up to then occupied by the German Language Section of the University of Amsterdam will be vacated and turned over to the Institute, a special committee worked out a plan for the accommodation and the layout of these premises. This allocation of additional space will improve appropriate lodging of personnel. although the requirements for extra storage room for the collections continue to have priority. In the course of the year under report it became more and more evident that, owing to the lack of accommodation and the poor condition of the present building, it will be urgent to look for new and better facilities for storage of the Institute's collections and for lodging of its staff. With this in mind a start was made on the elaboration of a plan for new accommodation, adapted to modern demands of efficiency and providing ample storage space for the growing collections. The financing of such a project for new accommodation is a matter of grave concern and will not be easily solved. 8. Acquisitions In the field of acquisitions the year under report was good. A complete list of gifts and special purchases will be given in Appendix II. Below we draw attention to some of the more spectacular items: The French department received from Mrs. D. Prudhommeaux, Versailles, additional material pertaining to the Cabetarchives, which were acquired by the Institute in It contains for the most part data on cooperatives, colonies and settlements in France and the USA, as for instance the rare Bulletin de la société de colonisation EuropéoAméricaine au Texas by Considerant (21 issues, Paris/Brussels ); publications on and by the Oneidacommunity, about Shakers and Mormons, about 'Amana', the 'Rappists', etc. The collection also contains a large amount of photographic material both on the subjects mentioned and others (people's homes in Belgium, Van Marken), and finally, volume I of Marie GodinMoret's very rare work: Documents pour une biographie complete de JeanBaptisteAndré Godin, Familistère, Guise From L. Centner, Paris, a copy was bought of the Rapports des délégations ouvrières on the 1867 World Exhibition in Paris, 3 vols; it contains the reports of a hundred workingmen's délégations. Further a manuscript of the artistdrawer G. Pilotell, 'De la Semaine sanglanteal'exil, ', and over 200 letters, auto 14

graphs and printed documents, mainly on the Paris Commune, but likewise from the period around 1848, among them letters to and from A. Barbès, Giuseppe Garibaldi, E. Vermersch, E. Vaillant, E. Varlin, Jules Guesde, Jules Andrieu, Ch. Longuet, G. Flourens and many others. Then there are photographs, membership cards of clubs in 1848 and Finally, the Instituteacquired in the field of French social history three valuable reprints: L'Homme, Journal de la democratie universelle, the organ of the French exiles on the Isle of Jersey ( ), Affiches de la Commune de Paris ( ), the accounts of the Paris 'municipal council' forthat period, and Oeuvres complètes of abbé Grégoire (14 volumes). Especially in the first part of the year extra efforts were undertaken to stimulate the acquisition for the North European Department, which had slackened during the past years. With the aid of bibliographies the collection was brought up to date. During a short visit by Mrs. M. Schreuder to England, several pamphlets and periodicals were bought in London; this purchase led to further acquisition of materials on the social history of Great Britain, less easily available otherwise. Mr. P. Waterman, The Hague, donated to the Institute a rich collection of periodicals and pamphlets pertaining to the left movements in England, mainly from the thirties. Further the Institute bought volumes 4 and 5 of the Archives of the British Lahour Party, National Executive Committee Minutes, respectively , and , smette Fabian Society MinuteBooks, , both in a microficheedition. From the heirs of the late Kees Boeke the Netherlands Department received the archives of Kees Boeke and Betty Boeke Cadbury. Of importance are above all the documents pertaining to the 'Werkplaats Kindergemeenschap', founded by Boeke at Bilthoven in One of the most important acquisitions during the year under report was the library of Jacques Scharf, who died in Paris in 1974 and left his excellent library to the Institute. Dr. J Scharf was the secretary for international affairs of the Rumanian Socialist Party; in 1948 he had to take refuge in Paris. His inheritance contains about 5500 books on the history of anarchism, socialdemocracy, communism, marxism, trotskyism, as well as on nationalsocialism and fascism. Germany, France, Rumania and the USSR are the principal countries covered in this collection. Mr. Scharf s field of interest also included the history of the Jews. The book collection is provided with an adequate catalogue. The Institute owes a great debt of gratitude to Dr. Jacques Scharf and to his widow, who saw to it that the library was conveyed to Amsterdam. The Institute took over from Mr. Boris Souvarine, Paris, his collection covering the Russian socialist and communist movement and copies of his archives concerning the Comintern. A mongst these papers there are to be found some beautiful drawings by Iurri Annenkov of Lenin, Trotsky and others, as well as the partarchives of V.P. Machnovec ('Akimov'), etc. The Institute is very pleased indeed that in this way the precious collections of an old friend who even before the war represented the Institute in Paris, could be added to its collections. During a roundtrip through France, Spain and Portugal in March/April 1976, Mr. Rudolf de Jong visited among other places: 15

Paris, Montady, Perpignan, Barcelona, Madrid and Lisbon. Mr. de Jong strengthened old contacts and established new connections; he visited booksellers. scientifïc institutes and publishers, and succeeded in acquiring many old and new periodicals besides books, pamphlets, posters and other material. During his trip Mr. de Jong discussed the possibility of exchangeprojects with various institutions. A special mention must be made of the acquirement of a collection of Spanish periodicals from V. Alba (through the intermediary of the Abadia de Monserrat) and contemporary material from prof. José Termes (Barcelona) and Antonio Elorza (Madrid). In Lisbon R. de Jong succeeded in further developing the work done there in 1974 by Mrs. T. DuijkerCommijs. An important new connection in Lisbon is the publishing house Contraa Corrente, which has led to a steady flow of very well selected material: pamphlets, books, periodicals all on the manifold left currents in Portugal. Library a, General In 1976 the Institute's library acquired some 21,000 books and pamphlets (in 1975: 18,000). Of these, 17,000 titles were added to the collections (1975: 13,900). 8,928 publications were entered in the library register (1975: 9,222), making them provisionally available for consultation by way of an abbreviated title description. 17

Of the books received, 467 were review copies acquired by the International Review of Social History (1975: 396); 6,659 were newpublications(1975: 4,544); of these, 2,268 titles were received as gifts. The Institute bought 559 books secondhand (1975: 636). During the year under report the Institute received 2,147 current periodicals (1975: 2,139). See Appendix I. The collection Jacques Scharf, received by bequest in 1976, consists of ca. 5,500 titles; it has a separate catalogue in bookform, which makes the collection available for consultation. Further progress was made in the opening of the Latin American collections for consultation. b. Cataloguing In 1976,6,130 books and pamphlets were catalogued (1975:6,501). 11. Archives a. General The archivist, Mrs. E.M. Koen, started composing an index with data on all archives in the possession of the Institute. This index will serve as a basis for a general survey of the archives held by the Institute, to be published in the future. Mr. G.R. Keizer was appointed as assistant to this department. His tasks will be to furnish visitors with documents from the archives and to supervise the storage rooms. The microfilming of archives as a security precaution continued, though perforce at a slow pace. b. Processing of archives Anarchism Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Department: A start was made with the arrangement and provisional description of the voluminous archives of C.N.T./F.A.I. Provisional inventories were made of the archives of Luigi Fabbri, Bruno Misefari and of some recently received smaller archives. Central Europe: The arrangement and description of the Kurt Zielenziger collection was completed and a start was made with the arrangement of the Hans Stein archives. Great Britain, Ireland, North America and Northern Europe: Arrangement of the Sylvia Pankhurst archives continued; photographic material from this collection was transferred to the Visual Archives Department. The collection was intensively used by students and for that reason processing advanced at a slow pace. 18

The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg: The arrangement of the SDAParchives continued. A start was made on a systematical classification of the registrationcards. The number of visitors using these archives is growing. The incomplete archive of the Heemstede section of the SDAP was put into order. An inventory of the archives of the 'Stichting van de Arbeid' was completed as well as an inventory of the archives of Hein Willemse ( ). The work of classifying and registering leaflets from the years continued. 12. Visual Archives Department a. The use of the collections Apart from its use for exhibitions, television, etc, material from the collection was used for some seventy book publications, series of coloured slides, etc. b. Arrangement Arrangement was completed of: 1 Photographs from the Chernov archives; 2 Photographs from the Sylvia Pankhurst Archives. Thanks to a subsidy of Dfl. 28,000, from the 'ExtraFunds' account of the Ministry of Education and Science, a start could be made, on October 1, with the photographing of posters. The idea is to arrange these photographs into a cardphotoindex of the Institute's poster holdings, thus making this collection more easily available and safeguarding the original posters. c. Acquisition of photographs and posters some 4,000 photographs were bought, donated or reproduced. some 3,500 posters were bought, obtained through exchange, or out of other collections. d. Acquisition of caricatures some 1,000 items were bought or donated. 13. Binding and Photographic Departments a. Binding Department Books and periodicals bound by the Binding Department of the Institute Books and periodicals sent out for binding: 1,229 (1975: 756) 3,308 (1975: 1,332) 19

RESEARCH AND OTHER SCHOLARLY ACTIVITIES 14. Scholarly work, research programmes and preparation of publications by individual members of staf'f Mrs. M.A.H. Campfens Mrs. Campfens was a member of the editorial board of the Tijdschrift voor sociale geschiedenis (Journal of Social History), issued by the Dutch Association for the Study of Social History under the auspices of the Institute. In this journal she published a supplement to the 'Preliminary List of Pennames' (October 1976, no. 6), in collaboration with Mrs. J.M. Welcker. A start was made with the editorial work and annotations for the Memoirs of W.H. Meijer. Mrs. D.E. Devreese Mrs. Devreese was a member of the editorial board of the Tijdschrift voor sociale geschiedenis, in which she published a short article on 'The Establishment of the International Workingmen's Union in Belgium, '. FromJanuary I7toFebruary 13 she did research work on the First International at the Institute of MarxismLeninism (IML) in Moscow. Owing to the discovery there of several new documents pertaining to her forthcoming publication of 'Documents relatifs aux militants belges de la Première Internationale', the appearance of the first volume will be somewhat delayed. She read a paper on the First International in Belgium for an auditorium of staff members of the IML. Mrs. Devreese attended the 12th 'Internationale Tagung der Historiker der Arbeiterbewegung' at Linz. Austria. For this conference she prepared a paper: a report on the development of relations between the Belgian Labour Party and the Trade Unions. up to Fiom October 10 to October 17 Mrs. Devreese visited the universities of Greifswald and Rostock. For students at both universities she read a paper on 'The development of the Labour Movement in Belgium up to 1914'. R. de Jong Mr. de Jong gave lectures for the Studium Generale of the RomanCatholic University at Tilburg, and for history teachers in the programme of a postgraduate course in history. For the Youth Centre 'De Populier' in Amsterdam, he gave three introductory lectures on Anarchism, and for Youth Centres at Leyden and Eindhoven he lectured on Spain. In September R. de Jong read a paper on 'Die Entwicklung des Anarchismus und sein Verhaltnis zur Gewalt' in Western Germany (near Flensburg), as a contribution to a conference held on 'Linke Positionen und das Problem der Gewalt', organized by 'Die Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung'. 20

R. de Jong wrote several articles, e.g. an essay on Spain and Portugal for the popular edition The First World War; an introduction to the German edition of the pamphletd/c Spanische Tragédie by R. Rocker (Berlin, Kramer Verlag); an article on 'F. Briefwechsel mit Sozialisten im Ausland, with the assistance of Mrs. E.R. PhilippiLoewenstein. For the International Review of Social Histoty he wrote a number of book reviews and evaluated several contributions offered for publication in this journal. 21

B. Sapir Mr. Sapir focused his attention mainly on the preparatory work fortwo sourcepublications: Letters by Theodore Dan and Lydia Dan's Papers, a work, which required the sorting out and editing of hundreds of letters and documents. Their background is the history of the Russian Social Democratie movement in all its aspects. For this purpose numerous archives had to be studied in order to clarify the role played by various people in the leadership of the Russian Social Democratie Labour Party, both in collaboration with Dan and in opposition to him. The large amount of documents thus collected will lead to a better understanding of the Revolution of 1917 and to a deeper insight in the present situation in the USSR. In this work Mr. Sapir was assisted by A. Smirnov, who deciphered the manuscripts and did the typing. M.W.H. Schreuder Mrs. M. Schreuder read an introductory paper on the Pankhurst Collection (origin, acquisition, contents) to an 'Historical Dispute' of the University of Leyden visiting the Institute on June 22. Mrs. Schreuder reviewed several articles offered for publication to the International Review of Social History and did a great deal of bibliographical research work. M.M. Segall Rosenmann In preparation for the TI Encuentro de Historiadores Latinoamericanos' organized by the Universidad de Venezuela, to be held in Caracas from March 2026, 1977, M. Segall Rosenmann wrote the first of two papers under the title of 'Las Civilizaciones Andinas, Civilizaciones Mineras'. F. Tichelman For a projected publication of the autobiography of Jacques Engels, F. Tichelman prepared the annotation and did some editorial work. He edited his dissertation Stagnation and Movement for an English translation to appear in the Institute's series 'Studies in Social History'. He further supervised the German translation of his book Henk Sneevliet. A Politic al Biography (published in Dutch in 1974). For a study group of the Anthropological Sociological Centre, section South and Southeast Asia, which specialises in the agrarian history of Java, Mr. Tichelman held an introductory speech on the method of archival research in the colonial archives of the Ministry of the Interior (February 12). He also read a paper on the theses added to his dissertation Stagnation and Movement at the Historical Seminar in Amsterdam (May 5), as well as to a group of historians at Leyden (November 10). From 13 to 16 December Mr. Tichelman was a guestspeakerat a Colloque, 'Structures et cultures précapitalistes', organized by prof. R. Gallissot, section ethnosociété, at the Université VIII (Vincennes) Paris and read a paper on the precolonial structure of Javanese society with written theses on the Asiatic Mode of Production. Mrs. J.M. Wekker Mrs. Welcker continued her work on her dissertation Heren en Arbeiders (Masters and Workers). She wrote an In Memoriam Geert Spiekman for the Tijdschrift voor Sociale Geschiedenis 22

(1976, May, no. 5), and published an essay under the title Tree Labour at Walden' as a chapter for the book Bedrijven in eigen beheer, ed. by F. Becker and Johan Frieswijk (Nijmegen, SUN, 1976). In collaboration with Mrs. M.A.H. Campfens she published a supplement to the 'Preliminary List of Pennames' in the Tijdschrift voor Sociale Geschiedenis (October 1976, no. 6). 15. International Review of Social History After having been on nonactivity for a lengthy time, due to his illness (see Annual Report 1975, p. 23), the journal's editorial adviser Frits Kool could resumé his duties. As a consequence of his illness, the editorial board was confronted with arrears in its work, especially in the section of 'Bibliography'. For this reason the total number of book reviews in the 1976 issues of thejournal was less than normal: 383 titles. 44 manuscripts were offered for publication, about half of these were found to be suitable with or without some textual alterations. 16. Archives Bakounine Large sections of the forthcoming volume VI in the series 'Archives Bakounine', Michel Bakounine sur la guerre francoallemande et la révolution sociale en France, , went to press and research work for this volume was practically completed. A start was made with the preparation of volume VII: L'Empire knoutogermanique et la révolution sociale, The Editions Champ Libre in Paris published its fourth volume of Bakounine's Oeiivres complètes, this being a reprint of vol. lil of the Archives Bakounine :Étatisme et Anarchie, The commemoration of Bakunin's death, a century agoon July 1, 1877, led to a flow of appeals to the Bakunin Department for information and documentation, which could not possibly all be honoured. In collaboration with the State Museum Vincent van Gogh, the Institute endeavoured to organize an exhibition in memory of M. Bakunin; however, through lack of funds the plans could not berealized. On June30. A. Lehningcontributed toatelevision programme on Bakunin, telecast by Belgian Radio and Television. He accepted an invitation to participate at a colloque in Venice (September 2426), and read a paper on 'Bakounine et les historiens'. In this Bakunin memorial year a second edition appeared of On Anarchism, State and Dictatorship, an anthology from Bakunin's works, composed by A. Lehning (in Dutch; Amsterdam, Van Gennep, 1976). Mr. Lehning also preparedand published a Dutch edition of Bakunin's Confession (Arbeiderspers, Amsterdam). In the 'Collection 10/18' in Paris he published a collection of documents from contemporaries of Bakunin, Michel Bakounine et les autres, in which a vivid light is thrown on Bakunin's personality. On January 8, 1976, Arthur Lehning received an honorary doctor's degree in Social Sciences at the University of Amsterdam, prof. dr. Fr. de Jong Edz. acting as supervising professor. Following an invitation to read a paper at Leiden (the Huizinga 23

Lecture) A. Lehning on December 10 delivered a lecture on the subject 'Freedom and Equaüty'. 17. Publications in cooperation with others With the thought in mind to select rare books and periodicals from the Institute's collections forpublication in the form of re prints or microslides, contacts were maintained with the Harvester Press, Hassocks (Sussex). In connection with this project Mrs. M.W.H. Schreuder helped in selecting additional titles for the collection of pamphlets issued by the Social Democratie Federation. With the collaboration of Mrs. M. Hunink, Mr. B. Sapir and Mrs. CE. Wagenaar and financial support by the Institute, Mrs. Tatiana OssorguineBakounine published in Paris at the Bibliothèque russe de 1'Institut d'études slaves: L'Emigration russe en Europe. Catalogue collectif des périodiques en langue russe (Tomé XL/l), a catalogue containing also the Institute's collections of periodicals for that period. The Tijdschrift voor Sociale Geschiedenis (Journal of Social History), issued by the 'Nederlandse Vereniging tot beoefening van de Sociale Geschiedenis', and published under the auspices of the Institute, entered its second year. Substantial progress was made with the editing of Correspondence and Dociiments of Anton Pannekoek, by B.A. Sijes in collaboration with others. A first volume is scheduled to be ready for publication in the course of Publications In the field of the Institute's publication activities the most important occurrence during 1976 was the contact established with the publishing house Martinus Nijhoff, The Hague, which led to a general agreement to start a new series in the English language under the title 'Studies in Social History'. At the end of the year under report a first title appeared in the series: W.H. Roobol, Tsereteli A Democrat in the Russian Revolution. A Political Biography. The second publication in this series will be Zvi Rosen, Bruno Bauer and Karl Marx. The Influence of Bruno Bauer on Marx's Thought. scheduled for publication in June W.H. Roobol's work was published with a subsidy for the English translation from The Netherlands Organization for the Advancement of Pure Research (ZWO); prof. Zvi Rosen's book will be published by Martinus Nijhoff without financial support from third parties. The next book to appear in 'Studies in Social History' will be Marian Sawer, Marxism and the Question of the Asiatic Mode of Production. This work will be partly subsidized by the University of Adelaide, Australia, and partly by the Institute. A further title projected for the series is the English translation of F. Tichelman, Stagnation and Movement. Social Historical Reflections on Java and Indonesia in Asiatic Connection. The costs for the translation, which was started this year, will be borne by The Netherlands Organization for the Advancement of Pure Research (ZWO). The book will then be published without further financial support. 24

The title by Ursula LangkauAlex, Volksfront für Deutschland?, which was to be published in the Institute's series 'Quellen und Studiën zur Sozialgeschichte' (see Annual Report 1975, p. 24) was withdrawn by the author and published elsewhere. In October Mr. Robert Sigel, Munich, accepted an assignment to write a study and source publication on the history of the Second International during the years ; the intention is to have the book published in the Institute's series 'Quellen und Studiën zur Sozialgeschichte' with Campus Verlag, Frankfurt/M. The first title to appear in this series will be H.P. Harstick, Karl Marx über Formen vorkapitalistischer Produktion (scheduled for publication in September 1977). At the end of the year under report of the following titles of publications by the Institute are at the printers: 1 D.E. Devreese. Documents relatifs aux militants belges de la Première Internationale, vol. I; H.P. Harstick. Karl Marx über Formen vorkapitalistischer Produktion; 3 A. Lehning. Michel Bakounine sur la guerre francoallemande et la révolution sociale en France (Archives Bakounine, vol. VI); 4 ZviRosen. Bruno Bauer and Karl Marx. ThelnfluenceofBruno Bauer on Marx's Thought. This year again the Publication Department of the Institute was headed by Ch. B. Timmer, who acted as final editor of the books published under the auspices of the Institute and who supervised the financial obligations in connection with these publications. E. CONTACTS WITH OTHER INSTITUTIONS 19. Official contacts InJune 1976 Mr. T. Haan travelled to Paris in order toarrange the acquisition of some archives, but mainly for the purpose of forestalling damaging effects to the Institute in connection with the bankruptcy at the end of 1975 of the French bookshop 'La Joie de lire'. A certain amount of booktitles ordered from this firm were no longer available; considerable time and effort had to be spent to tracé these titles and verify them with the cardindexes. Loss to the Institute's library could be reduced to a minimum thanks to the initiative and prompt settlement by the bookshop 'Librairie de Valois'. Mr. J. Rojahn accepted an invitation from the Historische Kommission zu Berlin to attend a conference on the relations between the German labour movement and the labour movement in Eastern Europe in the period from 1889 to 1920; the conference was held from 18 to 20 February in BerlinW; J. Rojahn reada paper on the relations between the German Social Democratie Party (SPD) and the Polish Socialist Party (PPS) during the years 1892to G. Langkau, Mrs. D.E. Devreese and prof. Th. van Tijnattended the XII. Internationale Tagung der Historiker der Arbeiterbewegungat Linz, Austria(1418 September). G. Langkau acceptedan invitation to participate at a colloquium 'Proletarische Theoriebildung im 19. Jahrhundert', held from 711 October at the University of Bielefeld. 25

At the annual conference of the International Association of Labour History Institutions, held in the Feltrinellilnstitute, Milan. from 2023 September, the Institute was represented by Mrs. J.M. Welcker, Mr. J.R. van der Leeuw and Mr. A.W.M. Wiarda; they also visited the Bakunin exhibition held there at that time. During her visit to Great Britain Mrs. M.W.H. Schreuder had a conversation with Mr. Nurse of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets Central Library, who is interested in data on the activities of Sylvia Pankhurst in his area, the London East End. The contacts thus established will be further developed. The same applies to those with the Harvester Press at Hassocks (see p. 24). Mr. A. Lehning visited the Bakunin exhibition held in June at Lugano. The exhibition was organized by the Biblioteca Cantonale and presented an interesting documentation on Bakunin's residencein the Ticino during the years In conjunction with his visit to Venice on the occasion of the Conference on Bakunin held there from 2426 September, A. Lehning visited Rome and Milan in connection with preparatory work on the next volume of the Archives Bakounine, having as subject Bakunin's activities in Italy. Mr. J.R. van der Leeuw visited the Deutsche Gewerkschaftsbund (German Trade Union Association) in Düsseldorf for an exchange of views on subjects of interest to both institutions. 20. Groups visits Two groups of specialists from the Institutes of marxismleninism, Moscow and Berlin visited the Institute in connection with research work and documentation for forthcoming volumes in the new edition of the Complete Works of Marx and Engels (the MEGA). A group of staff members of the 'Landesvorstand Nordrhein Westfalen' of the SPD visited the Institute on december 17. J.R. van der Leeuw and G. Langkau gave introductory talks to this group. 26
