! Exemplar for Internal Assessment Resource Mathematics and Statistics Level 1 Resource title: Creating Cartoon Characters This exemplar supports assessment against: Achievement Apply Transformation Geometry in Solving Problems Expected responses The moderators have developed expected student response from a wide variety of sources. Date version published by Ministry of Education December 2010 To support internal assessment from 2011
Grade Boundary: Low Excellence 1. The student has demonstrated extended abstract thinking which is the requirement for Excellence. All aspects of the problem have been solved and correct mathematical statements have been used in the set of instructions and the description of the symmetries. 2. There is evidence of mathematical insight in the instructions for sewing backwards. The instructions for sewing backwards do not involve a generalisation and this is the reason for the classification of Low Excellence.

Grade Boundary: High Merit 3. The student has met the requirements for Merit because relational thinking has been demonstrated and communicated. Communicating thinking using appropriate mathematical statements is evident in the descriptions of the enlargement, translation and rotations. 4. The student has not demonstrated extended abstract thinking, which is the requirement for Excellence, because the instruction for the reflection is inaccurate and the generalisation for producing the logo for different media is insufficient.

Grade Boundary: Low Merit 5. The student has selected and carried out a logical sequence of steps to create the carton character and demonstrated understanding of concepts in the description of the symmetry of the shape to provide evidence of relational thinking. Communicating thinking using appropriate mathematical statements is evident in the descriptions of the transformations. The description of the enlargement and the final rotation is incomplete. It is for this reason the appropriate classification is low Merit.

Grade Boundary: High Achieved 6. Use of a rotation and reflection to create the cartoon. 7. One line of symmetry of the shape is described. 8. Achieved has been met because the use of a range (at least three) of methods has been demonstrated in the use of the rotations and reflection to create the cartoon character and the description of the line symmetry. The student has not demonstrated relational thinking, which is the requirement for Merit, because the description of the symmetry of the shape is incomplete.

Grade Boundary: Low Achieved 9. Use of a rotation, translation and reflection to create the cartoon. 10. Achieved has been met because the use of a range (at least three) of methods has been demonstrated in the use of the rotations, translation and reflection to create the cartoon character. Knowledge of geometrical concepts and terms is demonstrated in the descriptions of the transformations. Instructions for the cartoon are communicated. The description of the transformations is incomplete. It is for this reason the appropriate classification is Low Achieved.

Grade Boundary: High Not Achieved 11. Use of an enlargement and translation to create the cartoon. 12. Apply transformation geometry requires using a range of methods for Achieved and Explanatory Note 4 (EN4) of the standard indicates that a range of methods is at least three different methods. The student is Not Achieved because there is evidence of the use of only two methods.
