ch.1.1: AMR definition & motivation Definition: automatic meter reading (AMR) is the technology of automatically collecting data from metering devices and transferring that data to a central database for billing and/or analyzing AMR is gaining (and will continue to gain) importance through 1. an additional need from customers for timely information on the energy consumption. for energy saving 2. an additional need from energy suppliers to monitor the energy and water consumption in real-time. supervision of network and consumption 4
ch.1.1: AMR definition & motivation 3. an additional wish from energy suppliers and customers alike to control power consumption, as peak power supply costs additional resources, and thus money. 4. an additional wish from energy suppliers to make coordinated use of the many distributed power stations virtual power stations with combined heat and power units (CHP) solar, wind, etc. modules 5. an additional wish from utilities and customers alike to see additional services, e.g. prepayment, automated billing, reporting and outage control. 6. an additional drive from technological advances, as electronic meters are becoming more and more real. i.e. they finally start to hit the Ferraris meter cost-line. 5
ch.1.1: AMR definition & motivation AMR is a central part of modern home automation Dezentrales Energie- und Netzmanagement mit flexiblen Stromtarifen t (Local Energy and Network Management with flexible electricity tariffs) Innonet project (BMWi) Digital capturing of energy data Individual billing tariffs Customers should get detailed information about their energy consumption. 6
ch.1.2: AMR installations At the given moment, AMR systems can be found in the following varieties: For industrial customers, AMR systems are in use already for years and decades. mainly based on direct, modem based dial-in or dial-out connections. extremely expensive (in installation and running cost) non-satisfying reliability and availability barely scalable world-wide field-trials many of those installations show good technological advances, however, often suffer from limitations from physical or technological standardization. few large utilities that have installed AMR in large parts of the grid. Italian Enel Norway, Netherlands, Denmark, France and Spain 7
ch.1.3: AMR challenges cost efficiency installation and deployment scalability number of stations granularity of reading values metering vs. control standardization multi-party multi-utility internationalization future proof 8
ch.2.1: AMR architectures tertiary communication quaternary communication secondary communication Source: MUC-Projektgruppe, EMSYCON GmbH, Dr. M. Wisy primary communication 9
ch.2.2: AMR overall approaches one- vs. multi utility ownership of equipment / data points / data concentrators granularity of information load profile vs. integrated values proprietary (powerline) vs. IP electricity meter as central element? advantages always mains-powered physical connection to the network electric meter (ehz) already at reasonable cost level L3- vs. L7-gateway 10

S1-m Unidirectional Similar to S1, but mobile collector supported Collector has to be always-on. S2 Bidirectional Bidirectional version of S1. T1 Unidirectional Sending data several times per second or minute. T2 Bidirectional Bidirectional version of T1. Different frequency settings and data encoding from metering device to data collector and reverse. R2 Bidirectional Width transmitting ranges. Usage of frequency multiplexing for metering devices not to interfere with each other. 18
