3 VISUAL ARTS 11 AND 12 MEDIA ARTS GRADE COLLECTIONS INTRODUCTION The complete list of Provincially Recommended learning resources for most subjects includes a large number of titles. To help make the process of selecting learning resources more manageable for teachers, experienced teachers of the subject have been asked to identify Grade Collections. Each Grade Collection lists the Provincially Recommended resources that match the greatest number of prescribed learning outcomes for that grade and subject. Grade Collections are not prescriptive; they are intended to provide assistance and advice only. In many cases, Grade Collections provide more than one resource to support specific outcomes, enabling teachers to select resources that best match different teaching and learning styles. Teachers are encouraged to use existing resources that match the learning outcomes and to select additional resources to meet their specific classroom needs. The Grade Collections for Visual Arts 11 and 12 Media Arts have been developed to allow flexibility in organizing and implementing programs to best meet the needs of students, teachers, and communities. As schools can use a wide variety of methods and resources to deliver a visual arts program, the resources in the Grade Collections are not specific to any one visual arts teaching methodology. It is recommended that teachers use the Visual Arts 11 and 12 Media Arts IRP when making resource decisions. Resources that are identified through the Continuous Submissions process as having strong curriculum match will be added to the Collections as they become available. Information about new Provincially Recommended resources can be found at res_main.htm. This site is updated monthly and resources are organized according to IRP. Industry Standard Software Creating and in Visual Arts has expanded from the use of traditional tools for art making to the use of constantly evolving electronic tools and processes including a wide range of production and presentation hardware and software. It is expected that students in Visual Arts 11 and 12 Media Arts will have access to grade-level-appropriate productivity tools, including editing equipment, video cameras, lighting instruments, microphones, amplifiers, media players, CAD/CAM programs, word processors, spreadsheets, and database packages and video/visual/audio manipulation software. Information regarding the selection of industry standard software and a list of suggested visual arts software are provided at the end of this package. Other Provincially Recommended Resources Appendix B in the IRP includes annotations for other Provincially Recommended resources not in the Grade Collections. While these resources support only a limited number of outcomes, teachers are encouraged to consider them for different audience needs, teaching and learning styles, theme development, in-depth research, and so on. Outcomes Not Supported By Resources There may be prescribed learning outcomes either partially or not supported by learning resources. Many of these are best met by teacher-developed activities. Grade Collection Information The following pages present a Grade Collection chart for each grade. This chart is intended to reflect comprehensiveness of curriculum fit and alternatives for resource selection. The chart is followed by an annotated bibliography. Please confirm with the suppliers for complete and up-to-date ordering information. There is also a blank template that can be used by teachers to record their individual choices. This 564-page book provides art teachers with practical and detailed information on a broad range of health and safety hazards commonly found in art studios. The book includes information on all aspects of safety in the studio, including care, handling and disposal of materials, as well as protective equipment for the artist. Safety and health in the art studio are examined as they relate to the following types of art: painting, drawing, ceramics, computer art, children s art, printmaking, sculpture, metalworking, glass art, textile art, jewelry making, photography, and woodworking. Health and safety information is presented from an American perspective. Teachers may wish to supplement with Canadian content such as information from Workers Compensations Board or WHMS. Eight media projects addressing topics such as television news, public service announcements, ethics, music videos, visual language, soundscapes and advertising are provided. An extensive glossary featuring media terminology and media theorists is also provided. A Teacher s Guide, including rubrics for self, peer and teacher assessment as well as extension activities and timelines, is included on the CD-ROM. The author offers guidelines for improving photographs through the use of techniques, elements and principles of design as well as image development strategies. The book is abundant with full-colour photographs providing visually engaging examples of concepts discussed in the text. Topics discussed include image-development, selective focus, lens selection, colour, light, motion, portfolios, applied design, travel photography, portraits, advertising, computer re-touching, landscapes and still life photographs. Suggested skill development activities are offered. This book is written in the first person narrative and presents the author s own thoughts and perspectives. 8 APPENDIX B: MEDIA ARTS 11 AND 12 Grade Collections Escher, Van Gogh and Seurat: Art at Play Three Canadian animators bring their creative visions to the classic drawings and paintings of Escher, Van Gogh and Seurat. Each of the three segments explores the original artwork of the artists through the medium of animation. A wide variety of animation techniques are accompanied by interesting and imaginative sound tracks. Elements and principles of design are explored through the use of line, colour and light. This video provides an excellent springboard for class discussion on the creative process of artists. Cautions: Teachers should be aware that this video contains some nudity as well as images of characters using tobacco products. A two-component Canadian resource providing teachers and students with tools to address the issue of media literacy. Components include a 200-page hard cover Student Text and a 125-page Teacher Resource Binder. The Student Text includes response and analysis activities addressing legal and ethical issues. Social issues, such as violence, gender, body image and race are also addressed. The Teacher Resource Binder offers teaching notes which include learning objectives, ideas for classroom discussion and suggested instructional strategies. A series of articles designed for students to address topics such a mass media, popular culture, advertising and media literacy. This resource contains numerous activities to assist students in exploring the critical roles that mass media and popular culture play in constructing social and political realities. Twenty-three blackline masters are provided to assist teachers in addressing the specific details of these topics. An advanced level technical manual documenting the art of digital character animation. Clear step-by-step instructions demonstrate how to create studio-quality 3D models and animation. Topics include modeling with polygons and NURBS, creating atmospheric FX, animating with deformation tools, special effects, lighting and surfacing, facial animation, composition, cinematography and character modeling. Most lessons are software independent. An accompanying CD-ROM includes samples of animated clips as well as model templates which can be used in tandem with the book or independently. The CD-ROM should work with most high-end software such as 3D Studio Max, LightWave, Softimage. Mid-range software packages will work for some of the exercises but may lack the capabilities required for character animation. Cautions: Teachers should be aware that detailed full frontal nudity is displayed on various pages throughout the book and in the files on the CD-ROM. 9 APPENDIX B: MEDIA ARTS 11 AND 12 Grade Collections The Photographic Eye: Learning to See With a Camera Author(s): O Brien, M. F.; Sibley, N. This two-component resource package includes a 290-page hard cover Student Text and a 72-page Teacher s Guide. It provides an excellent introduction to image selection and development as they relate to photography. Topics addressed in the Student Text include photography equipment, composition, line, texture, shape, light, motion, perspective and developing a critical eye. Exercises and examples relating to photographing objects, people and places are also provided for students. The book s four appendices address additional topics such as film processing, the use of colour, manipulation and the presentation of photographic art as well as advanced techniques. Many black and white photographs provide examples. A glossary, index, and bibliography are provided. The Teacher s Guide addresses special considerations such as classroom setup, darkroom use and lesson planning. An 18-week unit and 36-week unit are provided. Additional information on assessment and evaluation is also offered. Blackline masters for student worksheets and quizzes are provided. The teacher s guide contains teaching strategies and concepts for learning to accompany the videos. The guide examines the media and its influence on consumers. It introduces each video and provides brief descriptions as well as some background information on the issues. Questions, activities, discussion ideas and research suggestions are loosely grouped into pre-viewing and post-viewing activities. The videos contain short segments ranging in length from 1.5 to 12 minutes. They are selected from primarily Canadian sources. The videos are organized into five thematic groups; "Seeing Ourselves: Media and Representation: "Selling Images and Values", "Our Constructed Worlds: Media Environments", "The Global Citizen" and "New and Converging Technologies". Although there are some American references, most content is Canadian. References to British Columbia are made. Although Scanning Television is cross-referenced with a separate resource package, entitled Mass Media and Popular Culture, it can be used as a stand-alone resource. Cautions: Teachers are advised to preview videos and read the teacher s guides as some content may be of a sensitive or offensive nature for some viewers. e.g., negative stereotyping, bias, violence. This multimedia teacher resource for film and video production was produced by SHAPE (Safety & Health in Arts and Production and Entertainment). It is intended for teachers at the senior secondary levels. The package includes a 15-minute video and accompanying resource manual for teachers, student booklet as well as promotional materials. The topics addressed involve safety and health issues as they apply to working in the video production, film and television industries. The topics include general safe work practices, craft-specific work practices, equipment, vehicles, locations, special effects, props, stunts, first aid and the Workers Compensation Board of British Columbia. The resource components work together to provide students with a thorough understanding of health and safety considerations for the arts entertainment industries. Lesson plans, classroom activities, question sheets and discussion suggestions are provided. All information is specific to British Columbia and Canada. 10 Industry Standard Software Many programs are available directly from the Internet when purchasing an education version or multi-pack. Demo versions of most software are also available on the Internet, with early versions often made available free of charge. This is an excellent way to discover if the software meets the needs of students and teachers and allows for the assessment of the computer s ability to handle the speed, memory, sound card, etc. requirements needed to utilize the full power of the software. This is especially true for digital video and animation. Use of industry standard software is encouraged. Selection of a particular application should consider: existing hardware and upgrade path cross-platform capability instructor training requirements time spent on student skill development versus curricular intent cross-curriculum applicability general flexibility and utility cost and affordability Software is constantly changing and evolving, with levels of difficulty ranging from entry to professional. The chart of industry standard software called Suggested Visual Arts Software for Grades 11 and 12 provides examples of software that are produced by companies that have been active in the software field for some time. In many cases, the software might fit into more than one category e.g., Painter fits into Paint/Draw and 2 D animation, imovie and Casablanca can provide enough versatility for most classes in video production, while Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere systems can be used jointly with software in all categories. Most of the titles listed include teaching aids and help menus in the form of Internet access on-line help and lessons, CD-ROMS, books, and user groups.
