Sports Medicine: The branch of medicine that deals with the prevention and treatment of injuries that occur to athletes and the active population. What responsibilities does the athlete have? : The Athlete Carry out the instructions given to him/ her by the coach, Athletic Trainer and Physician. : The Athlete The athlete also has a right to expect certain things, as defined in the Athlete s Bill of Rights. There are several common themes: Right to have fun through sports Right to participate in a safe and healthy environment Right to competent care and treatment of injuries What is the job of the coach? The coach is responsible for the health and well-being of the athletes when the Athletic Trainer is not available. : The Athletic Trainer The Athletic Trainer is a link between all the members of the Sports Medicine team. What are the responsibilities of the physician? : The Physician The physician has the final say over whether or not an athlete returns to play after an injury. Athletic Trainer: Introduction An Athletic Trainer is concerned with the well being of the athlete and generally assumes the responsibility for overseeing the total health care for the athlete 5

6 Who is an Athletic Trainer? The certified athletic trainer (ATC) is a highly educated and skilled allied health care professional specializing in the care and prevention of athletic injuries. Who is an Athletic Trainer? The term Athletic Trainer is a source of some confusion in other countries. Trainer is frequently someone who trains animals or someone in a health or fitness club Training often means coaching or teaching Who is an Athletic Trainer? In recent years there has been a push by some people to change what ATCs are called. What are some other names that may better describe what an ATC does? The first athletic trainers are believed to have worked in the Greek and Roman civilizations. Coaches, physicians and trainers worked to help the athlete reach peak physical performance. Galen was a physician, philosopher, and trainer to gladiators in Ancient Rome. Athletic training as we know today came into existence with the development of intercollegiate sports in the late nineteenth century. These early athletic trainers had no technical training or skills. What do you think they did? The earliest athletic trainers rubbed down athletes and occasionally applied a counterirritant or home remedy. 6

7 The Cramer family began producing a liniment to treat ankle sprains in the early 1920s. Over the years, Cramer began producing other products to treat injured athletes. Today, Cramer is still a big name in sports medicine products. The National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) was officially formed in College Athletic Trainers Kansas City, Missouri The mission of the NATA is: To enhance the quality of health care for the physically active through education and research in prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of injuries. In 1970, the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) was established. The purpose of certification is to establish entry level standards for Athletic Trainers. Certification Requirements In order to become a certified athletic trainer (ATC), a candidate must: Certification Requirements Graduate with a Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university Have proof of current Red Cross First Aid and CPR 7
