1 World-class research and education Business School Highlights 2015/16

2 In 2015, the UWA Business School s students and staff enjoyed outstanding success. In addition, our undergraduate Finance major was accepted by the CFA Institute University Recognition Program, and our Master of Human Resources and Employment Relations received accreditation from the Australian Human Resources Institute. We also offered four units fully online for the first time, and introduced two new postgraduate courses: the Graduate Certificate in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and the MBA Full Time. Among our research achievements, a paper co-authored by Professor Cristina Gibson won the Decade Award in international business. Published in the Journal of International Business Studies, the paper examines how national cultural values are related to workplaces behaviours. Associate Professor Fang Liu co-authored a study examining Australian consumers attitudes to luxury brands Chanel and Calvin Klein, winning a Citation of Excellence from Emerald Group Publishing. As one of the premier business schools in the Asia-Pacific region, the UWA Business School works closely with leading companies, a network of individuals and graduates, and the broader business and not-for-profit community. We are part of a World Top 100 university and have more than 5000 students from over 60 countries. The School provides a comprehensive undergraduate and postgraduate business education. Alongside this, our staff conduct world-class research in the areas of Accounting and Finance, Economics, Management and Organisations, and Marketing and Entrepreneurship. Our research has practical implications, and our community engagement activities include numerous conferences and public events designed to encourage discussion on topics ranging from Indigenous business through to Asia s energy future. Underpinning our success are our strong partnerships with the business and the wider community. The UWA Business School is guided by a Board which includes respected senior executives and directors of public departments and major companies. We are also fortunate to enjoy the support of individuals and corporate partners, who provide guest lecturers, case studies, mentoring, and a suite of scholarships and prizes. Internationally, our quality has been recognised through leading accreditation bodies. We are the only business school in Western Australia, and one of only eight institutions in Australia, to be accredited through both the European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) and Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Further, we are a signatory to the United Nations Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), underscoring our commitment to corporate sustainability and social responsibility. Over the past 100 years, we have produced thousands of graduates who are highly valued by industry and government. 5 Ryan Richardson Ella Graeser on exchange in Canada Our students We are proud to be shaping the leaders of tomorrow. Our students achieved at the highest levels in Economics PhD student Rumayya was awarded an Australia Awards Hadi Soesastro Prize (one of only two students Australia-wide to receive the award). Rumayya, an Indonesian research student, is working under the supervision of Professor Anu Rammohan to investigate the impact of Indonesia s decentralisation on regional development at the district level. Meanwhile, a team of UWA undergraduate students placed second nationally in the 2015 UBS Investment Banking Challenge, and UWA students also placed well in the Enactus National Championships, Microsoft s Protégé 2015 Competition and various local competitions. Emmelyn Wu, Enactus UWA member and friends Outperforming the market A share portfolio managed by UWA Finance students and Viburnum Funds outperformed the Australian market. The Viburnum-SMIF High Conviction Portfolio was launched in early Over the course of a year, the stocks in which it has invested delivered a 12% return; this return was achieved at the same time as the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) recorded a 10% decrease in value. The Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) was established in mid Since then, SMIF has become the official Bloomberg representative on the UWA campus, held trading seminars and a trade-a-thon during London and New York market hours, and facilitated six virtual portfolios run by student teams. Master of Commerce student Ryan Richardson took part in the SCRIBE21 program, completing one year of study at the UWA Business School and one year at Ca Foscari University of Venice - before graduating with two master s degrees. Meanwhile, dozens of other UWA Business School students took part in short-term international programs (including the Stanford Summer Session), exchange, and overseas internships and volunteering programs. This year, I have studied across three different European countries with students from all over the world, visiting companies that I would have never seen in Australia: a start-up incubator in Italy, marketing companies in Spain, and the European Parliament in France. 6 Engagement The success of the UWA Business School is built upon strong partnerships with the community. In 2015, we continued to engage with our alumni and with the wider community, including through expanding our Young Alumni Network, continuing the work of our Ambassadorial Council (based in the UK, US, Singapore and Australia) and holding reunion events. The School continued to receive strong support from private donors and organisations during 2015, both through in-kind support and through donations amounting to over $1.8 million. We co-hosted a number of public lectures, including from Reserve Bank Deputy Governor Philip Lowe and Hon Christian Porter MP, Minister for Social Services. Other guests to speak at UWA Business School events included: Richard Goyder, Managing Director, Wesfarmers Gail McGowan, Director General, Department of Planning Greg Roder, Executive Vice President, Business Development and Growth, Woodside Energy Naveen Unni, Partner, McKinsey & Company Our Centre for Social Impact hosted the WA Social Impact Festival 2015, which comprised several weeks of workshops and public lectures on topics ranging from religion as brands, through to the mental health impacts of Fly-In-Fly-Out (FIFO) work. The Centre also continued its research program on homelessness, not-forprofit organisations and related areas. The School hosted the Breakfast by the Bay series and Leaders Luncheon series, where topics included: Breaking the Boom-Bust Cycle of WA s Resource Dependency How Corporations Must Adapt To New Community Expectations Behind the Headline of Australian Manufacturing In early 2016, we hosted the 5th International Association for Energy Economics Conference. The regular Indigenous Business, Enterprise and Corporations Conference will return to the School in December One thing that sets top universities apart is an alumni base that develops strong personal and professional connections between members. I believe we ve taken the first step to achieving that with the UWA Business School Young Alumni Network. Kelvin Mahuka, Co-Chair 2015, YAN Action Learning program for community service organisations Community sector organisations in Western Australia will benefit from a new Action Learning program that aims to improve the capabilities of the sector s leaders. The Centre for Social Impact UWA CSI, Western Australian Council of Social Services (WACOSS) and BHP Billiton have joined together to offer the Action Learning program for the first time in The inaugural Action Learning program will be offered at no cost to selected leaders of community sector organisations in Western Australia as a result of funding by BHP Billiton. Over a period of about six months, the Action Learning program will address the domains of strategy, leadership, funding, and talent to equip community sector leaders with the knowledge, skills, and capabilities relevant to achieve social change. 6 The University of Western Australia

7 Our research Our researchers produce results that make a positive difference to communities. Confirming the quality of our research, UWA received a rating of five out of five - equivalent to well above world standard - in the category of Business and Management from the Australian government s Excellence in Research for Australia initiative. UWA was also rated at world standard or above in all other business areas: Economics, Accounting, Finance and Marketing. In 2015, our staff were elected to a number of high profile positions, contributing to the business, academic and broader communities. Associate Professor Millie Change was elected President-Elect (Australia) for the Accounting & Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand; Professor Peter Robertson became a member of the Australian Research Council College of Experts; Professor Ann Tarca was appointed to chair the Australian Accounting Standards Board s Academic Advisory Panel; and Winthrop Professor Geoff Soutar was elected a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia. Our researchers continued to publish in high ranked journals, and in 2015 received funding totalling over $2.2 million from organisations including the Australian Research Council, State Health Research Advisory Council, Sacred Heart Mission, Australian Housing & Urban Research Institute, Disability Services Commission, Alcoa Australia, Centre for International Finance and Regulation, and Woodside Energy.
