2 March 02, 2014 IoBM holds workshop stressing need for higher education KARACHI: Institute of Business Management (IoBM) on Saturday conducted a workshop featuring trickle down benefits of creativity for the public titled: How education and research can benefit the common man. This workshop was organized by students of Public Relations, Corporate Communication and Event Management under the guidance and supervision of Faculty Adviser Mr. Parvez Jamil..Talking to Daily Times Parvez Jamil said: The real essence of higher education and research would be of no help to society or to a country if concerned benefits do not reach or are not shared by the common man. Such fields were initially brainstormed in the class resulting in this workshop on creativity tricking down to benefit people in Economics, HRM, psychology, education, media, marketing, health, environment, energy, engineering, science and technology etc. The event mobilized IoBM students, faculty, management, alumni, media and guests to address issues faced by the masses and how higher education can make a positive impact in the life of ordinary Pakistanis. The concept givers were HoDs as well as faculty: Mr. Aslam Dossa, HoD Commercial and Professional Studies, Dr Abu Turab Alam senior fellow Computer Science, Dr Shahid Amjad HoD Environment and Energy, Dr. Linah Askari, Asst Professor Business Psychology, Dr Asima Faisal HoD Health Management and others. Faculty and HODs from various departments shared wisdom and emphasized on imparting knowledge to every person living in Pakistan. They highlighted the importance and significance of education in one s life. By being an educated person, his/her s perspective of viewing things widens and he/she becomes capable of looking at things objectively, they said, adding he/she becomes capable of improving standard of living and thereby that of the society. Some speakers stressed on the importance of technical education as well. They believed by learning basic technical skills a person could get a job in the technical fields which could help him earn a handsome amount to live satisfactorily. Apart from this education enables a person to learn respect, valuing people and a sense of right and wrong, they asserted. Faculty also stressed on the importance of the practical implications of research in local contexts. Research, which has an inherent relationship with upward social mobility of a citizen, seems to have been limited to the section of publications of a researcher s resume only in Pakistan. The commercialization of research and lack of academic audit in higher education in our country seem to have made the social reforms merely cosmetic and belittled true efforts of good researchers. Mr. Talib Karim, Rector Talib Karim, Sabina Mohsin executive Director and the Deans: Dr Syed Irfan Hyder College of Business Management, Muhammad Ali Shamim Dean College of Social and Economic Development and Ejaz Ahmed Dean College of Computer Science and Information Systems graced the event with their presence.

5 March 3, 2014 How creativity trickles down to benefit people Institute of Business Management (IoBM) Karachi The Institute of Business Management (IoBM) recently organised aworkshop on How education and research can benefit the common man. This event was arranged by students of public relations, corporate communications and event management, under the guidance and supervision of Faculty Adviser Parvez Jamil. Such fields were brainstormed for the benefit of the layman as economics, HRM, psychology, education, media, marketing, health, environment, energy, engineering, science and technology, with focus on grassroots level and the trickle down advantage for masses and for Pakistan. Gracing this occasion with their inspiring presence were Mr. Talib Karim, Rector, Ms. Sabina Mohsin, Executive Director, Dr Syed Irfan Hyder, Dean, and Mr. Ashraf Janjua, Adviser to the IoBM President. The event enabled IoBM students, faculty, management, alumni, media and guests to address issues faced by the masses and how higher education can make a positive impact in the life of ordinary Pakistanis. The speakers shared their valued opinions and emphasized on imparting knowledge to every person. By acquiring an education person, one s perspective is broadened and he or she becomes capable of looking at things objectively. It enables one to improve their standard of living and, thereby, that of society in general. Some speakers stressed on the importance of technical education, stating that by learning basic technical skills a person can secure decent employment and live satisfactorily. Education teaches a person respect, a sense of right and wrong, as well as the value of people. Other speakers emphasized on the implications of research in local contexts. Research, which has an inherent relationship with upward social mobility of a citizen, seems to have been limited to the section of publications only, it was said. Commercialization of research and a lack of audit in higher education has rendered social reforms cosmetic and belittled dedicated efforts of researchers.
