Academic transfer division : Art Emphasis Why study art Since the beginning of human existence, art has played a role in expressing the culture and environment of the time period. The formal study of art permits the acquisition of historical background, tools and knowledge required to understand the connection between art and life. There is ample evidence that the arts help students develop the attitudes, characteristics, and intellectual skills required to participate effectively in today s society and economy. The arts teach self-discipline, reinforce self-esteem, and foster the thinking skills and creativity so valued in the workplace. They teach the importance of teamwork and cooperation. They demonstrate the direct connection between study, hard work, and high levels of achievement. Art Majors at Mpcc The Art Departments at McCook Community College and at North Platte Community College can help prepare you for a professional career in the field of art. By completing an Associate of Fine Arts Degree from Mid-Plains Community College, you will have developed the necessary skill sets to seamlessly transfer into almost any college or university baccalaureate art program and be adequately prepared to complete their academic expectations successfully and in a timely manner. With these goals in mind, you will be grounded in the rich offerings available at Mid-Plains Community College and be given clear, concise guidance for your academic future. 2 Academic Transfer Division: Fine Arts with an Art Emphasis
Academic transfer division: Art Emphasis careers in art There are significant strategies in turning a love for creating two or three dimensional art pieces into a gratifying and successful career in the world of art. If become a working artist in one of a number of mediums is your goal, our program is an excellent place to develop and hone your skills. Our instructors are working artists themselves and have the hands-on experience and teaching ability to grow your abilities. But, while improving technique is important, learning the business of art is equally important. There are countless other art-related careers that you should explore to help subsidize your development. It would be almost impossible to list all the possible career opportunities for a person with an Art Degree. Please note that most listed here would typically require more than an Associate s Degree in Fine Arts. Some possible careers would include: Art critic Museum curator Art instructor Event planner Art supplies sales representative Fine art salesperson Art therapist Art gallery owner Animation and game design Architect Art director Artist Arts management Cartoonist Choreographer Cinematographer Costume designer Fashion buyer Fashion design Fashion merchandising Fashion sales associate Fashion sales representative Fashion stylist Gaffer Graphic design Illustrator Industrial design Interior design Key grip Landscape architect Makeup artist Model Motion picture director Motion picture editing Museum curator Museum technician Music management Photographer Producer Production assistant Record producer Set designer Video editing Web designer Academic Transfer Division: Fine Arts with an Art Emphasis 3
Academic transfer division: Music Emphasis Why study music The in Music degree program prepares students to transfer seamlessly into their choice of 4-year music programs at a competitive level, as well as advance their performance and creativity as a musician. Students have the opportunity to receive the proper foundational structure needed for any profession in music, which will include these course studies: Music Theory and Composition, Aural Skills, Piano Proficiency, and Performance (solo and ensemble). Courses expose students to various styles and cultural aspects of music. Learning how to write and read music, workshops, and performances are all part of this program. Having a career in music is beneficial to society. Music is a universal language that reaches a wide audience, aesthetically and emotionally. Music is one way for young people to connect with themselves, but it is also a bridge for connecting with others. Through music, we can introduce children to the richness and diversity of the human family and to the myriad rhythms of life. Daniel A. Carp, Eastman Kodak Company Chairman and CEO Casals says music fills him with the wonder of life and the incredible marvel of being a human. Ives says it expands his mind and challenges him to be a true individual. Bernstein says it is enriching and ennobling. To me, that sounds like a good cause for making music and the arts an integral part of every child s education. Studying music and the arts elevates children s education, expands students horizons, and teaches them to appreciate the wonder of life. U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley, July Academic Transfer Division: Fine Arts with a Music Emphasis
Academic transfer division: Music Emphasis WHY MAJOR IN MUSIC Vocal: A degree in vocal performance would typically focus on several career paths: to become a classical music vocalist, a director or participant in a choir or a professional vocal/choir instructor. Instrumental: An instrumental music track would typically require selection and study in one of the following disciplines: high brass, low brass, woodwinds, or percussion. The instrumentalist would train for performance, education, and/or a career in music business. Keyboard piano/organ: In almost all cases, all music majors will complete piano proficiency requirements for their degree regardless of their music major discipline. Those wishing to major in piano will typically seek performance quality study. They are usually called upon to accompany choirs, orchestras, bands, and soloists. Organ majors will typically study to become performers in churches, or other educational environments. Academic Transfer Division: Fine Arts with a Music Emphasis 5

Academic transfer division: Theater Emphasis Why study theater As you are considering career and postsecondary educational study, you can t help but notice that others around you are seeking careers in medicine, law, engineering, education or computer science. And you re considering theater as a career? GOOD FOR YOU! While the outside world and especially parents, consider the study of theater to be only focused on actor and acting performance, the reality is the study of theater at the postsecondary level (college) is in the business of theater. Granted, performance is a pinnacle to theater study, and many who study theater have a goal to be on the stage or in front of a camera. But, the scope is much larger. According to information provided by Jeffery Leptak-Moreau in an online story from the School Theater Association, Americans for the Arts analyzed the economic impact of nonprofit arts and culture organizations in the United States, which were found to be the source of $166 billion in economic activity. Moreover, nonprofit creative industries alone support 5.7 million full-time jobs. So, it goes without saying that there are significantly more high paying careers off the stage and behind the camera, and therefore can be argued that the study of theater can be closer to the business of theater and small business development. WHY MAJOR IN theater Acting: As reported in the Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2014, 59,210 people identify themselves as actors (BLS Classication ), and as a group are reporting an overall 6.3% growth. If becoming an actor is your goal, why shouldn t you be one of them? Producers and Directors: Is one of the more lucrative careers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Based on their May 2014 report, those that produce or direct stage, television, radio, video, or motion picture productions for entertainment, information, or instruction. They are typically responsible for creative decisions, such as interpretation of script, choice of actors or guests, set design, sound, special effects, and choreography. There are 97,300 listed as producers and/or directors in the BLS report. 8 Academic Transfer Division: Fine Arts with a Theater Emphasis
Academic transfer division: Theater Emphasis Teaching: The Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2014, states that theater educators will typically teach courses in drama, music, and the arts including fine and applied art, such as painting and sculpture, or design and crafts. That includes both teachers primarily engaged in teaching, and those who do a combination of teaching and research. There are numerous levels to teaching theater in educational environments: K-12 public and private schools, colleges, universities, and professional schools, junior or community colleges or other proprietary theater/ performance related learning communities. careers in theater While many stay focused on the core acting, directing, design, and teaching, there are much larger and broader applications to theater graduates. Some (but not all) of those include: Production support services Arts administration Education/ Theater teacher Actor/Actress Company manager Development director Artist-in-residence Director Producer Box office manager Arts fundraiser Scenic designer Carpenter Scenic artist Press agent Arts council director Theatre librarian Lighting designer Electrician Business manager Drama therapist Voice-over artist Personal manager Audience relations specialist Coordinator hair/makeup Artist s agent Community arts center director Marketing director Outreach coordinator Costume designer Draper booking agent Managing director Special effects technician Publicist Grants specialist Acting coach Stage manager Literary agent Public relations director Property designer Casting director Technical director Academic Transfer Division: Fine Arts with a Theater Emphasis 9
