1 4 Scientific Publications of the ^ Technology Assessment Forum on Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery: Economic, Ethical and Social Issues Guest Editors: Michael Eliastam, M.D., M.PP Barbara Gastel, M.D., M.PH. Proceedings of the first Technology Assessment Forum sponsored by the National Center for Health Care Technology (NCHCT), a United States Public Health Service agency. This forum represented the second phase of comprehensive assessment of coronary artery bypass graft surgery, which addressed the economic, ethical and social aspects. Each forum provided an opportuntity for everyone interested in a technology to participate in reviewing various aspects of it. Not only physicians and surgeons, but also representatives of the insurance industry and disability programs, and health planning, health financing, and patient and family groups participated in the Forum on CABG. The 2'/2 day forum consisted of commissioned papers, critiques prepared in advance by panelists, and several open forums for interaction among presenters, reviewers, and the audience. Development of salt sensitive and salt resistive strains of rats provided inexpensive models for studying hypertension. Dynamics of rat circulatory system is similar to dogs or humans. Studies on rats cost only a fraction of studies using dogs.
