3 Preface i by Arndt Bode This is the 10 th report of Lehrstuhl für Rechnertechnik und Rechnerorganisation (LRR-TUM) as part of the Department of Informatics at Technische Universität München. It covers our activities of the years 1998 and As for the research teams, this report is subdivided into four major areas: - Programming Environments and Tools for Parallel Processing - Parallel and Distributed Applications - Parallel and Distributed Architectures - The TGI group Further chapters cover the topics of funded projects, teaching activities, publications and presentations and an overview of faculty and staff.

4 ii During the last two years, several new projects have started, others like the BMBF projects SEMPA and PAR-CVD or the EU project SEEDS ended. With the new projects, a number of new researchers have joined LRR-TUM. On the other hand, after successfully having finished their doctorates, a number of co-workers left our group. In the second half of 1998, Prof. Dr. Hermann Hellwagner, a former professor at LRR-TUM, was appointed to a chair of informatics at the University of Klagenfurt, Austria. Currently Prof. Dr. Thomas Ludwig has temporarily taken over the function of this professorship while we wait for a new permanent appointment. In this process, mainly the group Parallel and Distributed Architectures has grown in number of researchers, reflecting especially the important role of cluster-computing, based on inexpensive PC and workstation technologies. Regarding the teaching activities, in 1998 the experiment to implement a seminar on Entrepreneurship proved to be very successful. In cooperation with the Munich labor office, the chancery Kantenwein, von Bechtolsheim und Partner and various other partners (banks, VC agencies, IT companies)a course was established covering the legal and economic basics as well as the practical development of a business plan. The seminar currently runs for the third time and now includes both students from informatics and MBA of TU München. The working environment of LRR-TUM is strongly influenced by two facts in the year 1999: - on April 1, Arndt Bode has been nominated as a Vice-President of TU München, - on November 2, more than 650 students have been admitted to their first semester in informatics (leading to an enormous workload especially in our TGI laboratory). Our work at LRR-TUM is supported by the Bavarian Ministry of Science, Research and Arts and by a number of national and international funding organizations and industrial partners: German Ministry of Research and Technology (BMBF), German Science Foundation (DFG), Bavarian Research Council (BFS), European Commission, BMW, SGI, Siemens AG, Intel, AMD, Genias, AEA, Max-Planck-Institut, ABB, and various other partners.
