3 IMS: A New Layered Network Architecture Supporting Multimedia IMS is a next-generation architecture designed by the 3GPP to support: Multimedia convergence of voice, video, messaging and data Access convergence among wireline and wireless networks IMS splits traditional (closed) networks into independent architectural layers Application / Service Layer Switching / Session Control Layer Connectivity / Transport Layer IMS creates converged networks Simpler & more standardized Packet-based (IP) Eliminates the need for expensive Intelligent Networks style platforms Application / Service Layer IMS Servers Application & Media Servers, Home Subscriber Server (HSS) Switching / Control Layer IMS Softswitches P-CSCF, I-CSCF, S-CSCF, MGCF, MRF Connectivity / Transport Layer Network Connectivity IP, PSTN, 3G mobile, ATM, Satellite Netcentrex S.A. Proprietary Information 3

4 IMS: The Enabler of Multimedia Convergence Communication Today Communication with IMS Separate, single-media communication sessions Voice Video SMS Instant Messaging Simultaneous, multimedia communication sessions Voice Video Multimedia Services Presence Apps Messaging Gaming Application Sharing IMS = IP Multimedia Subsystem Netcentrex S.A. 5 Overview of IMS Components Netcentrex S.A. Proprietary Information 5

6 Operator Benefits of IMS Lower OPEX New services can be integrated faster and cheaper Lower interop costs since IMS is based on SIP and industry standards Lower maintenance costs due to reduced number of systems Reduced costs thanks to single subscriber management across multiple networks I M S Lower CAPEX Common application servers and switches can serve any type of access network Lower financial risk of introducing new services, since they can run on existing platforms New Services & Applications Faster and easier development of new, differentiated applications which reduce churn and increase ARPU and can be accessed by any network Extend capabilities of existing applications Enables rich and dynamic service combinations (e.g., mid-call multimedia; combined TDM/IP services in the same session) Netcentrex S.A. Proprietary Information 6

7 IMS Service Examples Voice over IP Push-to-talk, push-to-view, push-to-video Multiparty gaming Audio/Web/videoconferencing Rich calls, such as combining video and data Mobile IP Centrex Mobile Virtual Private Networks (VPN) Presence Group chat Multimedia advertising Instant messaging Unified messaging Personal information services, calendars and alerts Video streaming Interactive voice response Netcentrex S.A. 11 IMS Market Adoption Fixed Incumbents IMS gives fixed operators more powerful ability to manage subscriber identity IMS allows incumbents to rapidly deploy new services to compete against ITSPs, cable operators and other new operators Internet Telephony Service Providers (ITSPs) ITSPs are already network-agnostic IMS will allow ITSPs to easily develop applications and access other networks to also become MVNOs (if they embrace IMS standards) Cable Operators With IMS, cable operators can migrate from their initial TV focus to full triple play over a common infrastructure Mobile Operators Can implement IMS for applications such as Push-to-talk and WiFi integration But to achieve the full benefits of IMS, mobile operators need to 1) fully upgrade their networks to 3G; 2) build IMS client software into mobile handsets; 3) develop IMS compliant applications Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) With IMS, MVNOs can develop network-independent applications which can be easily ported to different host-operators Source: 2005 Netcentrex S.A.
