Wireless DSL in Action The Advantage of WiMAX based wireless DSL for incumbent and competitive operators White Paper

The Need to go Wireless In remote areas where wired infrastructure is not available or too expensive to deploy and maintain, operators are turning to broadband wireless networking for a suitable and cost-effective, long-term solution. WiMAX technologies, with unmatched reliability and enhanced coverage and capacity capabilities, offer a winning business case for swift and effective-deployment of DSL like services. There are different scenarios where the deployment of a wireless infrastructure is particularly advantageous: Replacement of an existing worn out copper infrastructure Expansion of DSL offering to areas where no infrastructure is available Competition with existing wired DSL service providers using a more cost effective wireless technology Operator Considerations in Planning Ahead Operators that support multiple access technologies and seek to grow with additional deployments are faced with a number of characteristic challenges: How to offer subscribers a user experience that is independent from its access technology How to integrate a billing system with media sensitive access capabilities, to enable subscriber packaging in line with the access technology they have utilized How to deliver consistent service availability on all levels, at all times These network operators also have clear financial needs, which must be considered when planning the new network layout for optimization: CAPEX - Common infrastructure OPEX - Unified service environment DSL Architecture: Traditional vs. Wireless Traditional DSL systems work with a BRAS router, typically using the PPPoE protocol. Subscriber premises Subscriber line (xdsl) Transport Network (ATM or Ethernet) ISP Network (IP) Internet xdsl Router DSLAM BRAS Internet Router xdsl Connectivity diagram 2

The BRAS (B-RAS or BBRAS) The Broadband Remote Access Server (BRAS) routes traffic to and from broadband remote access devices such as digital subscriber line access multiplexers (DSLAM) on an Internet service provider's (ISP) network. The BRAS sits at the core of an ISP network and aggregates user sessions from the access network. It is at the BRAS that an ISP can inject policy management and IP Quality of Service (QoS). The specific tasks include: Aggregation of the circuits from one or more link access devices such as DSLAMs Provision of Layer 2 connectivity through either transparent bridging or PPP sessions over Ethernet or ATM sessions Enforcement of Quality of Service (QoS) policies Provision of Layer 3 connectivity and routing of IP traffic through an Internet Service Provider s backbone network to the Internet The BRAS is also the interface to Authentication, Authorization and Accounting Systems (AAA). The PPPoE The Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet is a network protocol for encapsulating Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) frames inside Ethernet frames. It is used mainly with DSL services where individual users connect to the DSL modem over Ethernet and in plain Metro Ethernet networks. By using PPPoE, users can virtually "dial" from one machine to another over an Ethernet network, establish a point to point connection between them and then securely transport data packets over the connection. Pre-paid traffic bucket business models can also be created with PPPoE more easily than with DHCP or multiplexing multiple users with different speed tiers or QoS through 1 DSL modem or by creating a different login for each static IP purchased by customers. 3

WiMAX-based Wireless DSL WiMAX based Wireless DSL can operate in two modes, depending on the operator s needs and preferences: 1. The Classic mode: The ASN-GW operates in parallel to the BRAS that connects the network to the OSS/BSS. Contral Layer OSS BSS Contral Layer BRAS ASN-GW Contral Layer DSL Other... WiMAX 2. The Ethernet CS mode: The WIMAX network connects directly to the BRAS, via the ASN-GW, and the BRAS connects to the OSS/BSS. The WiMAX working mode utilizes Ethernet CS the PPPoE protocol works over WiMAX and there is only one connection to the OSS/BSS. Contral Layer OSS BSS BRAS Connectivity Layer ASN-GW Access Layer DSL Other... WiMAX 4

The Ethernet CS mode has the following advantages over the Classic one: Simpler system architecture Easiness of new service roll-out and billing Reduced CAPEX and OPEX Supports for Level 2 VPN for enhanced support for business customers Furthermore, since BRAS and ASN-GW have a very similar functionality, in mixed network environments we recommend to deprecate the ASN-GW into the L2 switch and leave the control layer interface function to BRAS, thus unifying into a single point of interface towards control and service layers this brings many advantages: Save money and effort Save time (TTM) Avoid error in duplicating the same network definitions These capabilities represent some of the major advantages of WiMAX, and are not offered by other wireless technologies. This three- layer architecture, outlined below, defines the evolution from vertical silos of services that do not communicate with each other, to effective horizontally integrated network architecture. PSTN network/ PSTN services Mobile network/ Mobile services VolP network/ VolP services Enterainment network/ Enterainment services From Stovepipe to Layers Applications and Content Common service Capabilities Network/Transport (Different access->ip) Vertically Integrated Networks Horizontally Layered Networks Traditional Silos of Services vs. Future Converged Services 5

A Three Layer Architecture Overview 1) The Network or Transport Layer This layer is responsible for network access. It allows different devices and user equipment to connect to the network. Devices can connect to the network in the Transport Layer using different techniques such as fixed access (DSL, cable modems, Ethernet etc.), mobile access (wideband code division multiple access i.e. WCDMA, GPRS) and wireless access (WiMAX or WLAN). This layer also lets devices receive and place calls to and from public switched telephone networks (PSTN) or any other circuit switched network through its media gateways. This layer establishes user equipment IP connectivity. After receiving an IP address and the ability to exchange SIP messages, user equipment will be responsible for its own interaction, independent of the underlying network access technology. 2) The Control Layer This layer is the host of various control functions. such as AAA, Policy Controller, SIP functions. 3) The Service or Application Layer The two Service or Application Layers provide an integrated and standardized network platform to enable service providers to offer various multimedia services in the Service Layer. Application Layer Prosonce Group List Telephony Application Servers Control Layer Session Control Operation Management Provisioning Charging Transport Layer IP Routors Media Gataway PSTN 6

Summary Wireless DSL over WiMAX offers a range of unmatched bottom-line advantages: Faster and easier network deployment, integrating at the BRAS level to OSS/BSS systems already in place in multi-technology networks >> Simplified system architecture Easy and swift roll-out of new services and service packaging/ billing Reduced overall CAPEX and OPEX Suitable for all deployment scenarios: rural, sub-urban, urban Superior support for business customers >> Level 2 VPN support 7
