3 CLICK for FLYER Help Youth Learn the Soft Skills Needed for Success at Work "Skills to Pay the Bills: Mastering Soft Skills for Workplace Success," is an innovative new curriculum that is focused on teaching "soft skills" to youth, including those with disabilities. Created for youth development professionals as an introduction to workplace interpersonal and professional skills, this resource is appropriate for youth ages 14 to 21 in both in-school and out-of-school environments. The curriculum was developed by the U.S. Department of Labor s Office of Disability Employment Policy
4 (ODEP). Learn More.... What's Ahead after High School? Becoming a Life-Long Learner by: Kathy Treants Youth with disabilities who are leaving high school are at a great point in their lives. They have their whole lives in front of them. Young adults have many options when it comes to life after high school. I have a new saying in my office that states "The best way to predict your future is to create it." This really hits home because none of us, whether parent, student, or educator knows exactly what the future holds for our children. We do know that for young adults with disabilities one of the major turning points in their lives will be leaving the high school environment. Depending on their skills and interests, some of the possibilities are: * Moving directly into full-time employment * Setting up a household, marrying, and starting a family * Going to a trade school or pursuing other training to learn specialized skills * Attending a community college * Continuing on to a four-year college or university * Combination of part time employment/academic Learning To prepare for the transition process, here are some of the questions families might be asking: * Postsecondary education and training: Will our son or daughter continue academic education or decide to get some other kind of training right after high school? * Housing and living arrangements: Where will my young adult live after high school? Are there daily living skills that are needed to live independently? * Transportation: How will my young adult get around and travel independently to and from work or school? * Work experiences: Does working directly after high school provide the best option? If so, what kind of work will the young adult do and what are the best ways to prepare or train for a job? * Social relationships, recreation, and leisure: How can my young adult prepare for a satisfying, rewarding, and happy social life as an adult? How can I encourage friendships and participation in recreation and leisure activities? Nevada PEP has transition trainings that will help families obtain information and resources that may be able to answer questions. Visit to sign up for a transition class. Talking with your youth and recognizing how all these activities produce experiences and opportunities for life-long learning can help families begin moving toward writing that next chapter in their lives. Children's Mental Health Awareness Month
5 Nationwide Recruitment: Clinical Trial of Riluzole in Pediatric Bipolar Disorder This study is testing the effectiveness of riluzole versus placebo for decreasing anxiety in children with pediatric bipolar disorder. Children and youth with bipolar disorder display episodic elevated mood and associated symptoms of decreased need for sleep, increased goal-directed behavior, and increased self-esteem/grandiosity. Children ages 9 to 17 with bipolar disorder may be eligible to participate in this four-phase, 12- to 15-week inpatient or outpatient study. During Phase I, participants
6 are gradually withdrawn from all current psychotropic medications. Phase II is a one-week medication-free period. During Phase III, which lasts two weeks, participants are randomly assigned to receive either riluzole or placebo (a sugar pill ). During Phase IV, participants continue on riluzole or placebo for six weeks. At the end of the study, those who received placebo have the opportunity to receive riluzole. CLICK HERE - Clinical Trial sign-up... SUPPORTING REUNIFICATION AND PREVENTING REENTRY INTO OUT-OF-HOME CARE This bulletin explores the research on best practices for supporting families after children return from out-of-home care. This publication also provides a number of examples of successful, innovative programs that support reunified families. See More... SAMHSA CHILD MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVE EVALUATION FINDINGS These reports present program evaluation findings of a federally-funded initiative that supports systems of care for community-based mental health services for children, youth, and their families. The data include service characteristics, use, and outcomes from FY2006-FY2009. 7 As Secretary Arne Duncan said at the White House Summit: Students should not be threatened physically, isolated socially, or hurt emotionally based on their skin color, their ethnicity, any physical or mental disabilities, their sex, their sexual orientation, their gender identity, religion or any other reason. Through our collective efforts, we're going to be able to reduce this harassment and make schools a better place for students to learn I start with a simple premise that no school can be a great school until it is a safe school You cannot do your best or concentrate academically if you are scared.
